Jeter not in Yankees clubhouse or lineup on Wednesday

There was no sign of Derek Jeter in the New York Yankees clubhouse on Wednesday morning and, according to NJ.com, he isn't in today's lineup or listed among any of the hitting groups for the second consecutive day.

The Yankees shortstop felt stiffness in his surgically-repaired left ankle Tuesday and was scratched from last night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.  X-rays of the of the mildly inflamed ankle were negative and he was benched for "precautionary" reasons.

He joins a All-Star roster of injured or rehabbing Yankees and now the team is waiting to see how much of a setback Jeter's stiff ankle will be.

"I'm not concerned because I was told this was going to happen," Jeter said after his ankle got "cranky" yesterday.  "From everything I was told by doctors, this is normal."

The Yankee Captain is listed as day-to-day but it is reasonable for Jeter to take a few days off to rest the inflamed joint.

Check out the Yankees lineup when they play the Boston Red Sox today at Steinbrenner Field:

1. Brett Gardner, LF
2. Eduardo Nunez, SS
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
4. Juan Rivera, 1B
5. Ben Francisco, RF
6. Jayson Nix, 2B
7. Chris Stewart, C
8. Thomas Neal, DH
9. Melky Mesa, CF

Vidal Nunon will start for the Yankees.
