Derek Jeter could make spring debut this weekend

It sounds like Derek Jeter's scheduled return to playing for the New York Yankees is right on target —make that exactly on the mark.

The Yankees have set Sunday as a tentative date for the Yankee shortstop's spring training debut — the exact date the team had said he would return a few weeks ago.

Not so fast said manager Joe Girardi, who is hesitant to guarantee Jeter's availability this week, reports NJ.com.  Girardi already has a roster full of rehabbing players and wants to take things slowly.

"I've been more under the impression we take it day by day and see where he's at," said Girardi before the Yankees 20-0 loss to Atlanta.  "He's doing well.  He's progressing the way we want, so we'll see where he is this week. [We] should know in the next few days if that's a real possibility."

Don't expect to see Jeter taking the field on the left ankle he broke last October.  He is expected to beging playing as the designated hitter before easing back into his regular fielding position at shortstop.

Still, it has to be heartening to Girardi and the rest of his teammates to know that the Captain's return is right around the corner.
