Angry mob chases soccer referee around pitch after call

A soccer match between Al-Nahda and Al-Salam Zgharta of the Lebanese second division soccer league in Beirut turned into a crazy two minute version of Get the Ref after a red card call.

The bizarre scene began after referee Bachir Awasa issued Al-Nahda's Youssef Omar a yellow card he changed to red.

An angry Omar attacks Awasa and chases him across the pitch only to be joined by kicking and swinging teammates and team officials.  Stadium security in military uniforms — some with with guns — can't seem to do anything to stem the escalating situation.

The old guy outruns the angry mob for a couple of minutes by darting from end of the pitch to the other before finding safety in one of the changing sheds.

Watch at 2:08 when Omar practices his best soccer flop and collapses in agony for some unknown reason.

It was no surprise to find out that Awasa reportedly retired from refereeing after the incident.
