Eli Manning said he isn't jealous of all of the attention the New York Jets are getting but— while the two-time Super Bowl won't go topless like the now-infamous Tim Tebow photo— the New York Giants starting quarterback thinks his backup, David Carr, should give it a shot to give the team more exposure.
"I told David Carr to take his shirt off while we were running sprints after practice to see if he can get the same coverage," Manning told ESPN Radio-New York yesterday.
While it may sound like some kind of man-crush, it's more because the Giants starter has noticed all of the media attention "backup" Tebow and Mark Sanchez are receiving this summer. A lot of Giants' fans probably don't even know Carr is still on the team.
"No, I am not jealous," said Manning, who claims he likes the relative quiet around the Super Bowl champs' training camp in Albany.
The photo of Tebow— trotting off the field in a pouring rain without his jersey— was back page material in New York and had panting women tweeting about the pose until their fingers bled.
"Well I think it's about football," Manning continued. "Training camp for me is time to get the team together and go practice football. You think of training camp as time to interview all the football players but for me it is about practice. Every time you turn on the TV, it's about the Jets; 'SportsCenter' is camped out at the Jets complex."
It's beginning to sound like Manning has his own complex— an inferiority one.
"I think they are moving everything from Bristol [ESPN's headquarters in Connecticut] to right there to their complex over there. That will be an interesting move."
Next time it rains at the Albany practice field and Carr is leaving the field, have your cameras ready.
