Goodell tells fans 'We're sorry' about replacement refs

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is apologizing to fans for having to use replacement referees during a lockout of the regular officials.  The three-month impasse led to three weeks of controversial officiating — culminating with a questionable call that cost the Green Bay Packers a victory Monday night.

Goodell apologized Thursday during a conference call about 12 hours after the two sides came to an agreement.   The referees' union and league finally shook hands on a tentative eight-year deal that will allow the regular refs to return beginning Thursday night with the Baltimore Ravens-Cleveland Browns game.

"Something like this, it's painful for everybody," said Goodell.  "Most importantly, it's painful for fans.  We're sorry to have to put fans through that."

The use of replacement refs during the lockout was a public relations disaster for the NFL that saw multiple games affected over the first three weeks of the regular season.

A deal was finally struck after the Seattle Seahawks debatable last-second win over the Packers Monday night in which the replacement referees missed a call.

  2. GOODELL IS THE NEW GOON SQUAD LEADER.HIS ONLY MISSION IN "RUNNING"THE NFL IS TO SEE HOW MUCH MONEY HE CAN STEAL FROM THE PLAYERS WITH HIS PHONEY PENALTIES. HE WANTS TO START TO MAKE A FASHION STATEMENT BY PUTTING SKIRTS ON THE QBS.OOPS,DO NOT TOUCH THEM THAT WAY.THAT HIT WILL COST YOU $50K.
HE IS ALSO LIKE A PUPPET ON A STRING.AND NOT LIKE THE ELVIS PRESLEY LYRIC. THE OWNERS WANT ALL OF THE MONEY.THEY DO NOT WANT TO PAY FOR STADIUMS SO THEY HOLD UP CITIES OR PUT THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER. CHARGE THEM WITH BLACKMAIL.
SURE WE BITCH ABOUT THE PRO REFS BUT AT LEAST THEY DO TAKE THE TIME TO GIVE US A GREAT GAME.

    1. Lets see players putting other players on a hit list, then paying them to try and cripple , injure or permanently remove good players from the game. is a phony penalty when they are suspended and fined , I do no think so. They should have fired, or was thehony penalty
When one team wire tapped other teams to gain an Advantage to win the super bowl. These are phones penalties.

Players and coache both used every dirty trick they knew against the opposing teams during the use of replacement ref's which made it appear the refs were doing a worse job than they were. Every game I watched there ware so many personal fouls going on, it's a wonder someone was not seriously injured.if this is what you want in a football game I will pass.players think they are so pure, if that is so why can they not play a clean fair game, instead of doing every dirty trick they can think of, or they that insecure about their true abilities, or just natural scum bags.

  3. He needs to apologize. What a doush bag of a commish. How about an apology for lying to us about the call on MNF? The Catch was awarded to a guy that had his right arm free while they are falling to the ground. Only one player "caught" that ball & you tried to explain your way clear of the flack. No back bone...

  4. SCREW YOU Goodell! It is my sincere hope that you are fired from the NFL with the hope of NEVER being allowed to even attend another game, period. Your "tenure" as the commissioner of the NFL has brought about NO GOOD WHATSOEVER! You've left your mark. . . now leave. Apology NOT accepted.

  6. The NFL as a whole was wounded very badly with the call on the Green Bay/Seattle game. Even after the review, they still got it wrong...trying to save face.
So to keep from looking even more stupid, Roger Goodell issues a statement the next day standing behind the (obvious to everyone) bad call. Professional Wrestling anyone? No one will ever trust Roger Goodell again.
How do all these players work for such a dishonest piece of shit?
Come on Roger, throw that strap over the shower rod and get to swinging. How can you live with yourself you loser. Oh yeah I just remembered.....millions and millions and millions of dollars. It's OK then never mind!

  7. I think Goodell has done an admirable job generally. The referee negotiations were not his finest moment, but his leadership has been generally good for football. Hate to jump off the bandwagon. He has sought to uphold the integrity of the game. The referee situation was not his best moment because he served as the scapegoat for the owners and the NFLPA wanted to grind an axe over the whuppin' they took in the agreement they reached last year.
