Boston Red Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway took this shot to the head on the tail end of a swing from New York Yankees outfielder Steve Pearce in the opening game of their three-game series in Fenway Park.
The crack of the bat hitting the Yale grad's helmet could probably have been heard in the seats on top of the Green Monster and, luckily for Lavarnway, was not as bad as it sounded.
Lavarnway had to be checked in the Sox dugout and — after his eyes were able to follow the finger of the doctor — was able to return behind the plate.
Lavarnway made a little bit of history this summer after he and Red Sox hurler Craig Breslow become the first Yale pitcher-catcher combination to appear at the same time in Fenway.
Still, it's pretty hard being a Yalie in a Harvard town.
