New Jersey ready to issue sports betting licenses in 2013

The state of New Jersey says it will start issuing licenses for sports betting on Jan. 9, 2013.

It all depends on if a federal lawsuit filed by the NCAA and the four major professional sports leagues can be overcome, according to The Associated Press.

The state Division of Gaming Enforcement published regulations for sports betting on Monday in the New Jersey Register.  The state enacted a sports betting law in January, limiting bets to the Atlantic City casinos and the state's four horse racing tracks.

In May, Gov. Chris Christie said New Jersey would proceed with its sports betting law — despite a federal ban on legalized sports gambling in all but four states. Christie thinks it's hypocritical that New Jersey can't join Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana as the only states with legalized sports betting.

"I don't believe that the federal government has the right to decide that only certain states can have sports gambling," said Christie. "And it does not acknowledge that there is illegal sports gambling going on in every state in America as we speak."

Proponents of sports betting believe it will stimulate a declining Atlantic City economy and pump some much needed revenue into the state's budget.

Casinos, racetracks or joint ventures of both can apply for the $50,000 "sports poll licenses."

  1. I had no idea New Jersey was going to have a sports betting law. I came across your post while looking up Atlantic City Casinos. My sister is turning 21 soon and I want to surprise her with a nice hotel suite at the new casino Revel. I can't wait. Thanks for sharing. I will have to let everyone know about the new law.
