Giants fall to Eagles 19-17 after Tynes' 54-yard field goal falls short

It was a typically wild New York Giants -Philadelphia Eagles battle for first place in the NFC East Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field.  But — just when it looked like Eli Manning was ready to lead the Giants to the 24th come-from-behind-victory of his career — the magic of Eli vanished.  Make that more like 10 important yards disappeared.

The Eagles (3-1) won 19-17 after the Giants (2-2) rally fell short with only seconds remaining in the game.

Ramses Barden — one of the breakout heroes during last week's victory over the Carolina Panthers —came out of this game wearing goat horns after his offensive pass interference set the Giants back a critical 10 yards leaving kicker Lawrence Tynes looking at a 54-yard game-winning field goal attempt instead of a more doable 44-yarder.  With only 15 seconds remaining, and no timeouts, the Giants made a tough decision to kick on third down instead of trying to get closer to the goal posts.

Barden had a hand in getting the Giants into winning field goal range in the first place, after two pass interference calls went in his favor, but his penalty was more glaring at the end.

Tynes — who is usually money on last-minute shots — watched as his kick sailed straight towards the middle of the uprights, only to fall about one yard short.  It was Tynes second chance at the game winner after the Eagles called a timeout to ice the kicker and his first attempt went wide left.

Manning wouldn't let Barden take all the blame for the critical penalty.

"We were close.  In field goal range and then had the penalty," said the Giants quarterback after the game. "My throw put Ramses in a bad position.  We fell short."

The Eagles winning score , a 26-yard field goal, was kicked with 1:49 left in the game.

The Eagles still have Big Blue's number. It was the Giants eighth loss in their last nine games to their division rivals.
