Jeter gets more tests on his ankle; surgery may be necessary

Derek Jeter was not at Yankee Stadium Sunday and will not make it to Detroit when the ALCS shifts to Comerica Park for Game 3 on Tuesday.

The New York Yankees shortstop underwent further tests on his fractured left ankle Sunday morning at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to determine if he needs surgery — and the prognosis looks likely that he will.

"It's possible," manager Joe Girardi said about the prospect of Jeter going under the knife.  "That's why they are having more tests."

The early word from specialists this morning indicated that he would not need surgery but that changed after more tests.

"When I went back there the doctor said, 'I am not saying you are going to need (surgery) but the  next tests will determine if you need it,'" said Girardi.

An MRI and CT Scan confirmed an ankle fracture Sunday afternoon.

Jeter is currently in a splint and on crutches and will see Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist, in Charlotte, N.C. in the coming days. The Captain was scheduled to go from the hospital to his home and keep his foot elevated.

Even without surgery, the recovery time for Jeter's injury is estimated to be at least three months — enough time to miss the post season but, if everything goes as expected, he should be ready for spring training.

Jeter broke his ankle chasing a ground ball in the 12th inning of Saturday night's ALCS Game 1 at Yankee Stadium.  It was the same foot he suffered a bone bruise on last week after fouling a ball off of the same foot.

Girardi couldn't confirm if doctors think playing on the bone bruise contributed to the fracture.  When the possibility was suggested to Girardi, he said, "I don't think he was playing on a stress fracture but the weakness in his ankle and the foul tip off his foot probably contributed to that."

The Yankee manager said he spoke with Jeter Sunday morning and claims the heart and soul of the team is taking his frustrating sideline position during the playoffs in stride.

"He will be the tough guy but this is what he lives for," Girardi said.

  1. I Feel sorry for Jeter...not so much because he got hurt and won't play for the rest of the season, but because there are about 4-5 other players on the team that are Playing like Crap...They should go back and look at some "Little League" films to understand HOW THE GAME is SUPPOSED to be PLAYED!!!!They might come up with hitting where the fielders are not standing,Get up and Show the ball in Your Mitt when you make a tag, Back up each play, hustle on the bases...Whaddaya Think
