Joe Namath: Jets wasted a draft pick on Geno Smith

Joe Namath was one of Mark Sanchez's biggest supporters last season — even after the New York Jets quarterback devolved into one of the least efficient signal callers in the NFL. Now — with the doomed Tim Tebow experiment behind them — the Hall of Famer thinks the Jets made a big mistake in drafting Geno Smith and would have benefited more by filling other positions with their second-round pick.

Joe Willie calls Gang Green’s new rookie QB Smith a “sensational athlete” with “good size.” But he also thinks drafting Smith with a No. 2 pick was unnecessary.

“No, I don’t think they needed a quarterback,” Namath said at the United Way’s 20th annual Gridiron Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel on Tuesday. “They needed the other positions filled. Possibly offensive line. They got some defensive line. The safeties are still questionable. The outside linebackers are still questionable.”

Namath thinks the Jets already had a quality quarterback in the much-maligned starter Sanchez even though he has struggled in the last two seasons. But Namath attributed that to “distractions.”

“I am pulling for him,” Namath said of Sanchez. “I know that he can do better than he’s done. And we saw him lead a team to two AFC championship games, right? I also know what it’s like not to necessarily have the weapons you’d like to have, not to necessarily have the time you’d like to accomplish.”

Namath sounded confident that Sanchez will lift himself up — whether it's as a Jet, or in another NFL uniform.

“I know it’s a team game and I know Sanchez is going to play better,” Namath added. “I promise you you’ll see a different guy (this year). I believe you’ll see a different guy.

“Mark’s not a puppy anymore,” he added. “He’s gone through some things, growing process. As far as Sanchez goes, even if he’s not with the Jets, he’s going to play as long as he wants to. He’s that good. As long as he wants to, he’s going to be in the NFL.”

Because of Namath’s ongoing faith in Sanchez, he said he didn’t think the Jets needed to draft a quarterback last month, but the Jets legend felt confident Geno Smith would be a good fit — on the field and off — if he beat Sanchez out as the starter.

“From what I’ve heard from his coaches in college, they think a great deal of him, so that carries more weight than any of the rumors you might hear,” Namath said. “I have watched him for the past four years. He’s a sensational athlete, good size, [but] he’s got to fill out a bit. He’s a little bit lean to get out with the big men.

“If Geno beats [Sanchez] out at training camp, he deserves to start, [but] I don’t know that the deserving guy always gets to start. The contract speaks for itself sometimes.”

Hate to break it to you Joe, but the Jets' 2013 quarterback controversy is just getting primed.

    2. I hear you. Sanchez is in a bad circumstance. Ryan doesn't belong being a head coach. And the Jets front office is wacko. The guys up top need to learn how to manage a football team.

    3. Totally agree, without a solid line a great QB will never produce wins...

  2. I am hoping and praying for the day Joe Namath stops talking negative about our front office and team. He is a past figure and he no longer understands the game the way it has developed. Doesn't he realize that it takes years of coaching and managing a roster to make some moves. Why is it that everyone thinks they are experts. Joe should just shut it and support his team like i do. Enough of the bashing, i think the writers and haters do enough on their own without our help. Go Jet!!!

(He is a past figure and he no longer understands the game the way it has developed). Is it just me or am I sensing some moronic excessive dooshbagedness going on here. Lets analyze this.

Joe Willy = Super Bowl Champion Quarterback aka Expert
      Mr Anonymous = Total Loser.

  6. HEY JOE NAMATH: L@@K at Geno Smith's WWWWWIND-UP and tell me that is the same as Tebow's?? Tebow got 'retrained' Joe you are right-on that the JETS need an O.Line. They need defense, they need running back(s), they need receivers that can get free / get open and catch the ball. And the Jets need a QB with cahones/BALLS: Sanchez sees an O.Lineman miss a block and Mark "Sackchez" Sanchez hits the turf and 'whoops' the ball comes out.
Tim Tebow would have turned a broken play into a 5 yard gain. So what does Rex "fat-idiot" Ryan do? Gets rid of Tebow--and gets another QB just like Tebow.!!! Rex Ryan needs to be fired. Mark Sackchez needs to be let go. GO with Geno Smith or bring back Tebow and RUN the G.D. no-huddle, spread offense, read/option like Chip Kelly (oregon=eagles), like RGIII (washington), like Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers) like Colin Kapernick (49ers) like Russell (5' 11 1/2") Wilson, etc.etc.

  7. If Sanchez played good last year there would be no distraction. Since he played so bad, they have to blame somebody for his poor performance. Tebow would not even called for any plays if Sanchez was doing right. They would put Tebow to play and if Tebow failed, it's Tebow's fault. Sanchez played for entire game and Tebow played for a few minutes, Jets lost because of Tebow. Was there any players played all positions that Tebow played?

  17. ...since the "N" word is toss throughout this thread it means there are a lot of children with no discipline or decision power to understand morality, decency, and respect, running their mouths to get attention and notice.

Uneducated kids wanting to be adults before growing up.

  18. The headline is bogus. Namath didn't say it was a wasted pick. He said he thought they could have used the pick on another position. Nothing wrong with that opinion. Lots of people share it. Beyond that he was complimentary of Smith. Learn to read and stop letting some dumb sports writer think for you via an attention grabbing, out of context, BS headline.

  19. JJJJETS suckes dix : Get rid of Rex Ryan, get RID of Mark "Sackchez" Sanchez. Get a GOOD head coach and quit bringing in g.d. quarterbacks!!?? What have you got about 8 of them sitting around including Jeff Garcia and JaMarcus F ing Russell. Yea, start Russell he's good for 15 touchdowns against 23 int.s' Yea, that's the ticket.
I always wondered why the Jets were so f) ed up. after last season and the acquirement of 5 or 6 qb's I know.
Someone upstairs in the organization is committing industrial sabotage. Hope their ticket sales go into the shi____er.
My biggest wish in life right now (I have everything else under the Son) my wish is for Tebow to get on a team, and start and then play those sniveling, clumbsey, fumbling, interception throwing JJJJJets. rex this is for you: B__

    ___urp !!

  20. Hey Sackchez: When the O. linemen miss a block, tuck the ball away (you know, like Tebow) put the head down and head North thru the offensive line. Any linebacker, just run him over (you know, like Tebow) maybe you'll actually pick up 5 yards instead of pee peeing yourself on the ground and fumbling and losing the ball.
You COULD have learned a lot from Tim Tebow but you are too insecure to learn so just drop back and and drop back and and oh oh here comes a blitzing lineman. Oh (pee pee) heck.
