A fluke overtime goal during the AHL Calder Cup Finals gave the Norfolk Admirals a 1-0 victory over the the Toronto Marlies and an ever sicker feeling to the losers after falling into a 3-0 hole in the series.
With the game tied at 0-0 during overtime, Norfolk's Mike Kostka dumped the puck into the Marlies' zone while their goalie Ben Scrivens left the net to clear the puck. One problem, the puck took an weird bounce off a stanchion along the glass, went sideways and right into the empty net while the Toronto skaters just stood around.
It looks like a couple of Admirals were offsides but the officials credited the goal to Kostka for the 1-0 win at 9:09 in OT.
The freak play had to break the hearts of the Marlies players and home ice fans. In fact, one Marlie on the ice can be seen smashing his stick over the crossbar in disgust.
I'm telling you, someone has cursed all the MLSE franchises. Maybe Harold Ballard from beyond the grave?
ReplyDeleteNorfolk player was offside, should have been no goal.
ReplyDeleteyou obviously don't know the offside rule. Before the puck crossed the goal line all Norfolk players exited the zone and reestablished an onside position - same as any other delayed offside call. Good goal..even tho it's bad luck for the losers.
Deleteyou should explain your reasoning to the ahl,
Deleteso they can tell you that you obviously don't know that a you can not score a goal on a delayed offside because anyshot that makes its way toward the area between the two red pipes is immediately supposed to be blown down and face off'd from where the puck was intially fired
I agree offsides... You can not score on a delay offsides call !!
DeleteNorfolk totally tagged up well before the puck went in the net. Same play with no goal would have resulted in a delayed off-side that got waved off as soon as the blueline was cleared. Just a fluke.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. I wish we could see every angle though. Looks like a third Norfolk player might have entered the zone before the one near the bench had tagged up. Either way, missed call or fluke, too bad it ended that way.
DeleteActually, this is not correct. An off-side dump in that goes "on goal" is (well, should be, in this case) an automatic whistle, regardless of any tagging up.
DeleteClearly no goal...
Deleteit only applies if the opposing player shoots the puck directly at the net.... wistle, This is a clear in with a fluke bounce.... goal
DeleteI would hate to have this one happen to me as I have played hockey for 18 years now but you all need to read up on your rules. The puck is clearly dumped in the zone and was not a direct shot on net. As rule 83.4 states for disallowed goals, this goal is a good one as the puck was not shot directly on net and no player touched the puck from either team. All members cleared the zone which cancelled the delayed offside after which the puck then enters the goal. Good goal. Feel bad for the team that lost but hopefully they can get a couple before their season ends.
DeleteHow did that not get called as offsides. Clearly two of the Admirals players were still in the zone when it was shot back in. Horrible that the linesman did not call that!!
ReplyDeleteBecause the admirals no longer had posession of the puck by the time it entered the zone. Had the player physically carried the puck in, it would have been offsides, but since it was dumped in before the blueline it remains a delayed offsides until another admiral touches the puck or all offsides players touch up to the blueline.
DeleteThat was one heck of a trick shot.
ReplyDeleteThe delayed-offside was waived off because all attacking players cleared the zone BEFORE the puck entered the net. The offsides goes away as soon as it's waived off. If a player was still in the zone, no goal. Therefore, valid goal. FLUKEY goal, but valid one.
ReplyDeleteThe WORST goal to lose by was the 1986 Oilers' Steve Smith shooting it into his own net off the pads of Grant Fuhr to lose in game 7 vs. the rival Calgary Flames. That ended the Oilers streak of cup wins and had nothing to do with fluke, just a terrible, terrible bad decision by a defensemen.

ReplyDeleteThe AHL has put out a statement on the missed call. You all should check the rule book before adding more disinformation.
Would someone Please tell those Canadian announcers that the Admiral's hometown [Norfolk] is pronounced in the Old English manner "NAW-fk" NOT "NOR-folk" *sheesh* Lots of English place name here in Virginia pronounced in the Old English manner: Suffolk is "SUFF-fk"; Isle of Wight "Isle of White"... and so on. (Remember Worcestershire [as in the Sauce] is pronounced "WOOS-ter-shear" NOT "Wor-chester-shire". Again the Old English manner.)
ReplyDeletethe Marlies were saying it right I think after that kind of goal "AW-fk". That be the new english style.
DeleteIt sure doesn't look like the ref made any attempt to get out of the way of the puck.
ReplyDeleteSure looks like it could have hit his skate.
The goaltender left his crease to play the puck, he didn't play the angle did he. This wasn't the first time a carom has taken out a goalie without touching him, nor will it be the last. Marlies' fans, it sucks but it is 100% legal and not a blown call. I'm not even an Admiral's fan nor a Marlie's but come on legal and devastating get over it.
ReplyDeleteThey cleared the zone and the delayed offsides was waived while the puck was along the boards. once it kicked off the boards, it was all good.
ReplyDeleteThis is just more evidence why the goalie should stop trying to play the puck behind the net... You have defenseman, let them do their job. Your job is to stop the puck from entering your net... If you want to play the puck like a D-Man, than change positions.
Am I the only one that saw the redirect off the ref's skate...

ReplyDeleteThe AHL's statement made it clear that it was a blown call, so you armchair officials can can the talk about it being the "right call". It wasn't.
ReplyDeleteSince there are no provisions for changing an erroneous call, the losingg team just has to take it in the ass.
