Dale Irby has become locally famous for wearing the exact same clothes in his yearbook photo every year for 40 years. Every time the Prestonwood Elementary School yearbook picture day came along, the 63-year-old PE teacher would reach for his favorite outfit — a tan, V-necked sweater and big-collared print shirt.
Irby told reporters he was at first embarrassed in 1974 — the second year of the streak —when he realized he put on the same outfit from the year before. But then, he just decided to make it a tradition.
Every year, the photos would change slightly. The mustache begins to grey and the hair on top thins a little more but the one constant is his groovy getup.
Mr Irby — who will call it a teaching career this year — added that it is the same shirt he's been using for every photograph which he can still get into — as long as he sucks his stomach in a little.
The school principal said Mr Irby's legacy — besides his sense of fun — would be that he taught all his school children the value of good sportsmanship and to respect others. The school gym has been renamed in his honor.
Right on.
Right on.
