Anyone who thought Derek Jeter was going to just settle back in his St. Petersburg mansion after his playing days are over might want to prepare themselves to start calling him The Boss.
The Yankees’ captain — who has repeatedly claimed he has no aspirations to manage — said he would like to be an owner one day.
“That’s the next goal, buddy,” Jeter said at his 18th annual Turn 2 Foundation dinner at the Sheraton in Midtown Sunday night. “Calling the shots, not answering to someone, that’s what interests me.
“I’d like to think I would be good one.”
If Jeter does become an owner, don’t expect him to emulate his mentor George Steinbrenner — who ripped his players in the media and fired managers at the drop of a hat.
“I’d probably be a little bit more behind the scenes than the Boss,” he said. “But I learned a lot of things from the Boss.”
When asked if he would be interested in owning the Yankees if the Steinbrenner family ever decided to put the team up for sale, he joked, “You got some money for me?”
Jeter said he has no interest in managing because of the travel and time it demands.
“I want no part of that,” he said with a smirk. “Then I got to answer your questions every day.”
Right now Jeter is concentrating on the final games of his remarkable career and says he has yet to reach out to any teams or owners — but plans to after the season ends.
He added that he has no interest in owning a team in any other sport but baseball.
Maybe a Class D Team unless his Bank Acct is over 2 Billions Dollars.
ReplyDeleteI maybe wrong but think about it, if he made 24 mil for 18 years, that would leave him less than 1/2 billion of savings. Even though he made interest, he is still shy by 1 billion and 1/2. Unless, he took up general management and bought a few franchise to build his credit by financing that and a few billionaire family to help him partner-up then he can do it.
ReplyDeleteWell. you are forgetting endorsements, investments, blah blah blah. But he would probably end up doing like Magic Johnson did... go in with a group of investors and own a minority share, but be the main baseball mind in that group of investors and probably run the organization from that standpoint.
ReplyDeleteThis is frickin' awesome, fantastic, incredible news. For YEARS I have hoped and dreamed that after he retired Jeter would put together a group on investors - ala Nolan Ryan at Texas - and BUY THE YANKEES.You can be absolutely sure that is what he's thinking.
ReplyDeleteI'm 60 years old,a lifelong Yankee fan and it's my prayer that when my time is done the NY Yankees future is in the impeccably trustworthy and wise hands of DEREK JETER.That way I can leave knowing they will continue producing championships for decades to come.
