NFL players survey says Rex Ryan most overrated coach

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan may be the head coach of a third-place team but, when it comes to being numero uno in one area, an NFL players poll says Ryan is tops at being the most overrated coach in the league.

Finally, Ryan gets to be ranked ahead of Bill Belichick in something.

The Sporting News polled 103 players from 27 teams, with players not permitted to name their own coaches.  Sorry Tim Tebow.

Ryan was named on 35 ballots as the league's most overrated coach surpassing Belichick's 16 votes for second-place.  They were followed by Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid with nine votes and the Washington Redskins Mike Shanahan with eight.

"His coaching style is over the top," an unnamed AFC player said of Sexy Rexy.  "Some of the things he does in front of the cameras are way over the top.  You must put that with the New York media and he has a pretty big reputation, I guess."

The anonymous player suggested that Ryan's recent record might even make the coach's new title irrelevant.

"I don't even know if you'd call him overrated anymore because it's going to be a couple of years since he was in the AFC finals.  He's pretty funny, and he's a pretty good coach.  But not that good."

  1. With Sanchez in QB, Jet will never go any where

  2. That's quite a "feet" to go from AFC elite to the toilet in a couple of years! His "pedestrian" coaching record over the past couple of years are going to get him the "boot"!

    LOL

  3. How is Belichick number 2? Hes been to 5 SB and won 3..probably a bunch of Jets that voted him

  4. Probably because he hasn't won a Super Bowl since the NFL took his camera crew away.

  5. Or because players are brainwashed to not like him by the media which shines a negative light on him because he doesn't like the media, or because of the reason you highlighted.
He's given a butt load of W's in New England in the past and present.

    1. Or maybe everyone is just tired of hearing how great he is.

    2. or because brady just makes him look good (like all of NE's other heralded coaches that left and failed). he makes some horrible personnel decisions(sit wes welker?!?! drop asante samuel, not get any of the big name defensive free agents to shore up a horrible unit), lets some terrible calls go out on game day(kneel before a fg instead of run it), cant get his D right(hasn't for years, maybe someone else was the defensive mastermind), inspires horrible end of the game play from his team and his/his staff's play calling-constantly blows leads.

  6. As soon as I saw the title of this I thought "Ryan has to be number 1," I for one am not surprised. I am surprised about Belichick though. I am not a Patriots fan but with the success he has had I wouldn't have imagined him to be on this.

  7. People still bring up the camera thing with Belichick. Even after big name coaches admitted to doing the same, not knowing just like Belichick, that it was not within the regulation rules... get some info before you speak of something you know nothing about. He has been to 2 superbowls since the spygate. Sure he didn't win them, but was a play shy of doing so in each of the games. And last year with 31st ranked defense. Id say that's good coaching.. far from overrated

Probably because he hasn't won a Super Bowl since the NFL took his camera crew away.

READ THE RULES ! The league quoted the first guideline against the Patriots, “All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead.” The rules never prohibit filming coaches. The sections used against the Patriots only concern camera locations.

Anderson’s memo adds an emphasis on signals, which isn’t in the rules. Also, Anderson says that videotaping is prohibited from “any other locations accessible to club staff members.”

IT WAS ONLY THE LOCATION OF THE CAMERAS !!! ALL TEAMS TAPE OTHER TEAMS SIGNALS- YOU MORON!

HOW MANY TIMES YOUR TEAM BEEN TO THE SUPERBOWL IN 10 YEARS?

THE PATRIOTS ARE THE ENVY OF THE LEAGUE

    1. correction....Steelers are the envy of the league. 6 SB's, in contention every year, and consistent, class organization.

  13. Even John Gruden has a SB title, enough said about sh-t coaches with a SB title.

  14. Yup he had his foot in the door of the coaching elite a couple of years back but since then he's been a step behind the others. I still think if he puts both feet firmly in the ground and stands by his principles he is a shoe in to be considered a top coach. You who judge him should walk a mile in his shoes first( and be prepared for him to take lots of pictures).

  15. Ryan, Sanchez should go ASAP

  17. Look idiots the Pats are 6 and 3 and those 3 losses add up to 4 points so they could very well be 9 and 0. and they are not playing their best football yet.
Give them credit look at the Giants they lost 2 in a row something the Patriots never do.
There is a lot of talent on the team I just think that the defense coordinator sucks in a big way.
