Sports arena roof ripped off by tornado (VIDEO)

The terrifying power of a rare Connecticut tornado has been caught on film as it blew off the dome of a sports arena on Monday.

The giant dome was sent flying through the air over a highway where a driver caught the dramatic footage on his mobile phone.

The driver can be hear shouting in panic (at :44) as the roof of the Sports World dome spreads out over the cars and narrowly escape as it lands on oncoming traffic.

"Holy s***, that's nuts!," a male voice can be heard shouting, before adding further expletives in rapid procession.

As the dome lands on the other side of the road he can be heard breathing a sigh of relief. He even says, "I'm gonna put you down phone," while he catches his breath.

"I don’t even want to look behind me. We made it," he says.

The Sports World dome from the nearby facility in Windsor Locks came off minutes after 29 children enjoying a day of exercise had fled the arena.

"I turned around and just heard this incredible noise and saw daylight, which you don't see because the dome was up," Kathy Russotto, Sports World’s manager said.

"The dome just went."

"[Domes] have been known to come down, other domes in the area, but that's usually heavy snow, a lot of rain, stuff like that," Sports World co-owner Kate Muratore said.

"I haven’t heard of anything like this happening."
