Williams described the incident on her Instagram page with some long-winded story about chasing down a man who had stolen her cellphone in a Chinese restaurant — and it sounded straight of of an action movie.
"I LOOKED AT THE CHAIR, THAN SHOUTED “OMG THAT DUDE TOOK MY PHONE!!," SHE POSTED. "NOT THINKING I REACTED (HENCE THE SUPERWOMAN PHOTO) I JUMPED UP, WEAVED MY WAY IN AND OUT OF THE COZY RESTAURANT (LEAPING OVER A CHAIR OR TWO) AND CHASED HIM DOWN.
"HE BEGAN TO RUN BUT I WAS TOO FAST. (THOSE SPRINTS CAME IN HANDY) I WAS UPON HIM IN A FLASH!
"IN THE MOST MENACING YET CALM NO NONSENSE VOICE I COULD MUSTER I KINDLY ASKED HIM IF HE “ACCIDENTALLY” TOOK THE WRONG PHONE. HE STUMBLED ON HIS WORDS PROBABLY NOT EXPECTING THIS TO HAPPEN. WHILE HE WAS THINKING OF THE RIGHT THING TO SAY AND EVENTUALLY HE SAID “GOSH YOU KNOW WHAT I DID! IT WAS SO CONFUSING IN THERE. I MUST HAVE GRABBED THE WRONG PHONE."
In fact, there was no leaping and Williams merely trotted out of the restaurant and confronted the slightly-built man who just handed it over — nothing like the scenario she detailed so breathlessly.
And Williams also claimed to have “received a standing ovation” when she returned to the restaurant. But that was nowhere to be seen on the videotape.
Let's give Williams her props. It takes a lot of guts for anyone to chase after a stranger and accuse them of theft. And she did catch the crook and got her phone back — all while a restaurant full of men didn't even look away from their Kung Pao.
Well played Serena. Just leave the thrilling superhero antics to the Marvel Comics writers.
