Yankees' Brett Gardner and Brian Cashman both victims of mistaken identity

By Tony Mangia

In two separate incidents Friday, a couple members of the New York Yankees family were both involved in dramatic incidents of mistaken identities by respective authorities hundreds of miles apart, but later absolved of any wrong doing after the infield dirt and exhaust fumes had settled.

Before rightfielder Brett Gardner got tossed out of a game against the Blue Jays up in Canada last night, general manager Brian Cashman was tossed by a swarm of anti-car theft police in Connecticut earlier in the evening — with guns drawn.

Gardner's bust and outburst in Toronto might have been witnessed by fans at the game and watching on the YES Network,  but it was the Yankees general manager's dramatic experience which might have been a little more TV show worthy after he was swarmed by “as many five patrol cars" and "between six and nine police officers” with “guns drawn” in Darien after being mistaken for an "armed car thief,” according to a report from the New York Post.

The only guns showing in the Gardner case were his biceps as he was restrained from going after umpire Chris Segal by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Cashman's ordeal began while was driving the vehicle from Yankee Stadium to the Norwalk, Connecticut Police Department on Friday afternoon to have it processed for evidence after he reported it stolen in the Bronx. When he stopped for gas in Darien, he was greeted with a swarm of police officers responding to someone in a white Jeep “that was brandishing a gun in a local doctor’s office.”

Combined with the fact that the NYPD never took the jeep off the "hot car" list, Cashman was told not to "make any rash moves" as he exited his vehicle. Talk about a trading deadline being over, this was one rash decision that even a MLB GM knew not to make.

“And that’s when apparently the circumstances radically changed,” said Cashman. “I had a welcoming committee descend upon me as I pulled out of that gas station … They executed a very tactful interception. They’re clearly very professional and trained and they asked me to turn my car off, exit the vehicle, walk backwards towards them … they were executing their duty.”

After a 15 minute process, Cashman was escorted to the Norwalk Police Department by Darien police in order to avoid a similar situation unfolding down the road. He was assured his vehicle was off the stolen car list.

Gradner's incident with The Man resulted from other player's barking in the Yankees’ dugout over a pair of questionable called strikes by Segal in the fourth inning, the first a strike-three call on Cameron Maybin and the second the very next pitch to Mike Tauchman.

After the Tauchman call, Maybin, seated in the dugout, yelled, “F—ing terrible, let’s go!”

Segal immediately responded: “Time, out, done!” and signaled someone was out of the game. When Boone inquired who had been tossed, Segal replied: “Gardner. He just told me I’m f—ing terrible.”

The obvious misidentification caused a stunned Gardner to emerge from the dugout before he blew up and had to be held back by Boone. Then it was time for Gardner's signature bat-bashing in the dugout.

“I told him I didn’t say anything,” Gardner said. “He told me I did say something. That’s why I got pretty irritated.” Gardner also called Segal “a liar.”

Later, a still agitated Gardner wasn't as diplomatic or forgiving as Cashman for the mishap. Asked if wanted an apology from Segal, Gardie plainly said, "Not interested."

CC Sabathia has to be held back during Toronto street brawl (VIDEO)

The Yankees weren’t just battling the Blue Jays for first place in Toronto this weekend — they were mixing it up with some fans as well.

A video posted on TMZSports.com Monday afternoon shows Yanks starter CC Sabathia getting into a shouting match outside a Toronto nightclub early Saturday morning.

The incident took place outside the EFS Nightclub where CC was seen relaxing with fans earlier in the night.

The video shows the 6-7 Sabathia, wearing bright red shoes, yelling and pointing at someone before a few friends, who are holding him back, get him into a taxi cab, according to the website.

If you look closely at the video below, you can see someone other than Sabathia walking around with a bright red shoe in his hand.

A representative for Sabathia told the New York Daily News Monday the pitcher had no comment.

Sabathia was slated to pitch Monday against the Twins at Yankee Stadium, but the Yanks announced earlier in the day that Bryan Mitchell would pitch Monday with Sabathia now going Tuesday.

A source said that Sabathia, and the rest of the Yankee starters, being pushed back a day had nothing to do with the incident in Toronto.

Brett Gardner takes on role of unofficial Yankees captain after loss: Report

It was a simple message scribbled in black on the white board near the door that led out of the Yankees’ clubhouse as they departed Rogers Centre Sunday.

But after the Yankees' 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto, Brett Gardner's written words spoke volumes:
"Cheer up everybody. We won the series. Still in 1st place."

Sunday's loss to the hard-charging Jays was likely a tough one for the Yankees to swallow — considering they had the chance to get revenge on Toronto for sweeping them the week before and because their bats couldn't help Luis Severino, the rookie phenom who gave them another strong start.

But Gardner's leadership move was clear. By taking two out of three games from the Blue Jays and jumping back into the American League East lead, there was good reason to take pride.

Anybody on the Yankees who knew Gardner wrote it surely wouldn't have been surprised that it came from the 31-year-old veteran.

Gardner's influence within the clubhouse is noticeable. The scrappy All-Star learned a lot from the Derek Jeter school of captaincy:  Lead by example. Exude quiet confidence. Make a statement when necessary.

On Sunday, Gardner did just that.

Mark Teixeira goes off on Yankee fan who interfered on play (VIDEO)

It's beginning to look like the New York Yankees are taking a beating and it's not only the Toronto Blue Jays inflicting the pain, it's the Bombers own fans.

In the top of the ninth of Sunday's game against the hard-charging Jays, Mark Teixeira reached into the stands near the Yankees dugout to try to catch a popup by Chris Colabello and after he couldn’t come up with it, a fan ran over him in an attempt to get the ball — almost twisting the first baseman's arm off in the process.

But not before Brett Gardner was drilled in the back of the head in left field when a teenage fan threw Jose Bautista’s home run ball back on the field in the fourth.

Neither player was injured by the fans’ recklessness, but both Yankees were peeved.

Teixeira, who snapped at the fan following the run-in, summed up the frustrating day, “You can insult. You can’t assault. We know you are upset we lost three in a row. Keep it to insults.”

The fan who climbed over Teixeira’s shoulder clearly didn’t do it intentionally and the one who tossed the ball back on the field- something that has become a tradition when a visiting player hits a home run- was not tossed from the game, according to a Stadium employee.

The Yankees are hurting in more ways than one.

Kevin Pillar goes airborne to rob Miguel Sano of extra-base hit (VIDEO)

The Blue Jays made some pretty impressive front office moves leading up to the trade deadline last week but none of them might be as spectacular as this single Kevin Pillar play in the outfield.

The Toronto centerfielder went airborne to make this tremendous diving catch to rob Miguel Sano of extra bases during Thursday night's game against the Twins.

The high-flying Blue Jays won again last night and have gone 8-2 and scored 59 runs during their just completed homestand.

Next stop, Yankee Stadium against the division-leading Bombers

'Jeopardy!' throws contestants a curve with Troy Tulowitzki question

Troy Tulowitzki did his part to help complete an answer for "Jeopardy!" contestants Wednesday night. Unfortunately, for Alex Trebek and his writers, the question was just a little outdated — and for the wrong team.

That's because "Mile high" is a clever "Jeopardy!" hint for Colorado and the shortstop was traded to Toronto the day before.
Clearly the "Jeopardy!" writers did not anticipate the Rockies shipping Tulowitzki up north when they wrote this particular clue, probably months ago. And one can only imagine the confusion at home when real baseball fans called out the show for this gaffe.

"Who are the Rockies?  I mean, Who are the Blue Jays? I'll take Potpourri for 100 Alex."

Tulowitzki, who was making his debut against the Phillies on Wednesday, had a monster night for his new team including this two-run homer at the Rodgers Centre.

At least Canada's smartest game show host, Trebek, had to be happy the way Tulo started his career as a Blue Jay.

Bryce Harper catches fan's phone for selfie (PHOTO)

It seems like there is nothing Bryce Harper can't do on the baseball field this season.

And that includes a little good public relations.

In between the second game of a day-night double-header against the Blue Jays Tuesday, Harper spotted a fan trying to snap a photo.

"They were trying to take a selfie with me," Harper said. "I went over there and said, 'Hey, toss me the phone and I'll do it for you.'"

He told AP after the game that he enjoyed the impromptu photo session.

"Just messing around a little bit with the fans," he said. "Enjoying it with them a little bit. It's always fun."

Harper leads the NL All-Star balloting with 2.3 million votes. Looks like he just got another one.

Jimmy Fallon frightened by foul ball, chugs beer at Yankees game (VIDEO)

Jimmy Fallon was caught taking a long chug of a beer at Thursday night's Yankees-Blue Jays game at Yankee Stadium.

It appears that a Carlos Beltran foul ball heading toward his head prompted the uninterrupted guzzle after losing his cap — and a little bit of his dignity.

Don't worry Jimmy, the net is there for your protection. And there is plenty more beer where that came from.

Next stop. Possibly famed Manhattan piano bar, Maries Crisis, for some slurred show tune renditions in a more genteel atmosphere:

A-Rod hits first home run since 2013, 'needed Google map' to round bases (VIDEO)

It had been a long time since Alex Rodriguez hit a home run — Sept. 20, 2013 to be exact — before the Yankees DH launched Daniel Norris' 1-0 pitch into the left field seats against Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium Thursday night.

And even A-Rod admitted he felt like he was in unfamiliar territory as he rounded the bases, as per Brian Hoch of MLB.com:
While A-Rod's solo shot was the 655th trip around the diamond, it's probably easy to lose your bearings after 19 months in exile. Here's betting the Yankees splurge for a GPS if he can keep jacking them out like that.

Oakland A’s Brett Lawrie strikes out four times on just 12 pitches (VIDEO)

The Texas Rangers pitchers made short order of Brett Lawrie's plate appearances Tuesday night. Really short.

The Oakland A's third baseman had a night he'd probably rather forget after striking out four times on just 12 pitches. That's right — 12 pitches. Meaning four times he strolled to the plate and each time he headed back to the dugout after three straight pitches.

And it seemed only fitting that he fanned for the final out on what had to be a long night.

"One of those games," Lawrie said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I felt I went in there with a good approach, I just didn't attack early and they ened up getting ahead offspeed early. So just one of those days."

The embarrassing Oh-fer dropped his batting average to .125. Lawrie, a career .264 hitter, was traded to the A's in the offseason after four seasons with the Blue Jays.

The good thing? Still 160 games to go. The bad? Still 160 games to go.

A-Rod gets more cheers than boos during Opening Day intro (VIDEO)

It's been a season and a half since Alex Rodriguez stepped up to the plate at Yankee Stadium and the Bronx pariah finally made his long-awaited return to baseball since being banned for doping charges.

The home crowd reaction for his Opening Day return was mixed — about 70-30 cheers to boos.

Make that about 80-20.

They still love A-Rod in the Bronx.

Blue Jays 'love' Yankees' David Robertson: Report

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing back closer David Robertson in 2015. But since it's starting to sound like the GM feels his team now has enough bullpen depth to handle the workload, it might be a long-shot that Robertson still suits up in the Bronx next season.

And the closer might be packing some long johns too.

According to the N.Y. Post, the Toronto Blue Jays  “love”  Robertson and might be willing to give him the long-term contract the Yankees refuse to do.

Casey Janssen saved 25 games with a 3.94 ERA for the Jays last season, but he’s a free agent and Robertson is the top reliever on the market. Robertson had 39 saves with a 3.08 ERA for the Yankees last season but rejected the club’s $15.3-million, one-year qualifying offer in search of a long-term commitment.

Robertson is reportedly seeking “Jonathan Papelbon money” — somewhere in the neighborhood of four years and $50 million. The Yankees would obviously be interested if he reduced his asking price.

And since Robertson hasn't budged, the Yankees just might let him get it elsewhere.

After signing left-handed reliever Andrew Miller to a four-year contract worth $36 million Friday, it lessens the Yankees' need for a top reliever who could close games.

In return for Robertson, the team signing him would give the Yankees their top pick outside of the first 10 choices.

While Cashman didn’t close the cage door on Robertson’s return, the team has left it open just enough for him to fly north.

Jose Bautista's fake toss to stands doesn't go over well with Yankee fans (VIDEO)

Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista tried to have a little fun with Yankees fans in the later innings of Saturday's game at Yankee Stadium but the joke didn't fly too well with the Bomber faithful.

Joey Bats thought it would be a hoot to gesture toward the Yankee Stadium crowd like he was going to throw a ball into the stands.

Not!

Realizing that this might lead to some hefty taunting from the Bleacher Creatures in the remaining innings, Bautista returned in the next inning with a peace offering:

Between Bautista beating up the home team at the plate and tormenting the crowd, the Yankee fans already had enough aggravation to dwell on — namely the dwindling playoff hopes and that whole Jeter leaving and everything — so these fans weren't having any of the outfielder's love.

Rejection!

Asked later if he enjoyed "stirring up" the boisterous Bleacher Creatures, Bautista said, "I don't think that's what happened. That's your take. Getting a ball thrown at me doesn't seem like it's very enjoyable.

"They were chirping at me. It was one of those things. They got a little rowdy and threw a ball to the field. I thought it was some innocent back and forth, but after the ball was thrown, I decided not to continue to have the interaction because what could happen next?"

Probably something more than chirping.

Jays fans troll Fernando Rodney by shooting imaginary arrows at him (VIDEO)

Throughout his career Fernando Rodney has irritated opposing fans with his routine of shooting an imaginary bow and arrow into the stands after each save.

On Thursday, a group of Blue Jays fans trolled the Mariners closer by drawing back on their own invisible bows and riddling Rodney with barrage of unseen arrows as he walked out to the mound.

These guys might want to brush up on their archery skills because none of their shots seemed to stick. Rodney went on to strike out two Jays batters en route to his 37th save of the season.

Or maybe they were Cupid's arrows.

Brendan Ryan makes nifty catch and throw to rob Steve Tolleson of a hit (VIDEO)

Yankees shortstop Brendan Ryan went deep in the hole to make this amazing play in the bottom of the seventh robbing Steve Tolleson of a sure hit during a 8-3 loss to the Blue Jays Monday night.

I think Derek Jeter pulled a couple of muscles just watching his replacement make the nifty catch and throw to first.

Blue Jays' ballboy flips over railing going for foul ball (VIDEO)

This Blue Jays ballboy goes all out trying to snare a hard-hit foul ball and tumbles over the right field wall into the stands Friday night.

The ballboy (ballman?) with the soul patch didn't snag the ball, but he puts his body on the line to deflect the wayward ball and probably save a couple of slow moving fans from the scorching drive.

Smooth little kid charms group of lady fans with foul ball switcheroo (VIDEO)

A quick thinking little kid with Clooney-sized charm — who was handed a game ball at Globe Life Park at Arlington during the Rangers-Blue Jays game on Saturday night — already knows how to impress the ladies.

Too bad what must have seemed like the most charming gesture to a group of pretty older women sitting behind the young guy — after he takes the prized souvenir he got from Jays third-base coach Luis Rivera and gallantly hands it over to them — turned out to be a Penn and Teller sleight of hand.

Unbeknown to the women and just about everyone else, the smooth kid already had another baseball in his hand when Rivera gave him the game ball and the pint-sized David Copperfield (he was married Claudia Schiffer) actually handed the thrilled ladies the decoy in  a brilliant switcheroo.

They don't notice the slight of hand, though, because the little magician never took the gamer out of his glove.

The girls think they have a real souvenir, kid keeps the game ball and everyone's a winner.

That's called outfoxing the foxes and it'll help him navigate the world of dating one day.

Here's MLB's new protective cap for pitchers (PHOTO)

Major League Baseball approved a protective cap in January for pitchers designed to minimize the injuries caused by being hit by batted balls, especially line drives drilled back to the mound.

On Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays’ Todd Redmond showed off the latest model.

The cushioned safety plates, made by isoBLOX, are sewn into the hat and custom fitted. The caps weigh an extra six to seven ounces and protect the forehead, temples and sides of the head.

Designers say testing shows the caps provides protection from line drives up to 90 mph in the front of the head and 85 mph on the side.

Several pitchers have been hurt by line drives in recent years. The latest was Cincinnati Red reliever Aroldis Chapman, who underwent surgery for broken bones in his left eye and had a titanium plate inserted into his head.

When MLB's approval was announced, Bruce Foster, CEO of the 4Licensing Corporation, parent company of isoBLOX, said, "It's not going to be a [Great] Gazoo hat."

Maybe we should call them the Bedrock Blue Jays.

Dioner Navarro gets first steal in five years, fans give him standing ovation (VIDEO)

Dioner Navarro doesn't steal bases often, so when he does, it's something to celebrate.

Navarro pulled off the rare theft Wednesday night against the Astros and — considering it was the catcher's first steal since '09 and only his 13th in 11 Major League seasons —  Blue Jays players and fans rewarded the effort with a wild round of applause and a standing ovation:

Believe it or not, Navarro  is currently tied for fourth in the American League in steals.

Here's the pudgy backstop chugging into second and coming up all smiles:

Fans settle battle for souvenir bat with game of 'rock, paper, scissors' (VIDEO)

When Edwin Encarnacion struck out to end the bottom of the seventh inning on Tuesday night, he lost the grip on his bat and it sailed into the stands:

The Tropicana Field crowd scrambled after the valuable souvenir and, eventually, two fans claimed their right to the rare freebie. While the husky fellow and slender guy battled over the prize, they finally decided there was only one way to settle this — playground style:

No brawling. No lawyers. Wouldn't it be great if all of life's disputes were settled with a simple child's game.
