Red Sox fan who was hit in the face by shattered bat at Fenway Park leaves hospital: Report

The Massachusetts woman who was seriously hurt when a broken bat flew into the stands at Fenway Park last week has been released from a hospital.

Officials at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston say that Tonya Carpenter was discharged and transferred to a rehabilitation center.

Doctors describe Carpenter's recovery as "excellent" and say she's getting stronger every day.

The 44-year-old Red Sox fan from the town of Paxton, suffered what police initially said were life-threatening injuries during the June 5 game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics. She was struck in the head in the second inning when the bat of Oakland's Brett Lawrie shattered and shards of wood flew into the seats along the third-base line where she was seated.

The game was halted for a few minutes while she was rushed out of the stadium, then resumed. 

After the game, Lawrie sent her a note and flowers in the hospital. Those same flowers reportedly accompanied her to the rehab center.

Organizers say they've received donations for Carpenter, who works for a construction company, from Red Sox and Yankees fans, alike, and even some from overseas.

Major League Baseball is now reviewing fan safety at stadiums.

A woman suffered life-threatening injuries after she was struck in the face by the shard from a broken bat that flew into the stands in front of horrified fans during the Red Sox-Athletics game at Fenway Park on Friday night, officials said.

With the Red Sox leading 1-0 in the second inning, Oakland batter Brett Lawrie hit a ball and shattered his bat, leaving only the handle in his hands while the barrel of it shot into the crowd like a missile. It struck the woman, who was sitting with a man and her son near the visitors’ dugout on the third base side. Her screams could immediately be heard by fans and even those listening to the game on the radio.

Paramedics and police rushed to the seats as the game was stopped and stunned fans covered their mouths in horror at the bloody scene. The woman was stretchered away out of the park wailing in pain.

A Boston police officer scooped up the young boy who was with her and shielded his eyes from the terrible scene while players from both teams stood silently outside their dugouts and peered into the stands. Red Sox president Larry Lucchino was seen down on the field with the emergency workers.

The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. as the woman sat in the second row at the ballpark, between home plate and the visitors dugout, just beyond the protective screen that shields the plate area, according to police and witnesses.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said Boston police Officer Rachel McGuire, a department spokeswoman. There was no word on her condition late Friday night.

Lawrie said after the game that he did not initially realize the severity of the woman’s injuries because he was running to first base when the bat sailed into the stands. He glanced back briefly toward the stands while running out his hit.

“Then in between innings is when things kind of got serious and I realized there was a bit of an issue,” Lawrie said. “Hopefully everything is OK and she’s doing all right.. . . That was just unfortunate right there, no doubt.”

Everything that followed didn't seem as important during the Red Sox 4-2 victory.

"Any time anybody's taken off the field on a stretcher you have your fingers crossed," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "You realize that that's a lot more important than a baseball game."

The Texas Rangers pitchers made short order of Brett Lawrie's plate appearances Tuesday night. Really short.

The Oakland A's third baseman had a night he'd probably rather forget after striking out four times on just 12 pitches. That's right — 12 pitches. Meaning four times he strolled to the plate and each time he headed back to the dugout after three straight pitches.

And it seemed only fitting that he fanned for the final out on what had to be a long night.

"One of those games," Lawrie said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I felt I went in there with a good approach, I just didn't attack early and they ened up getting ahead offspeed early. So just one of those days."

The embarrassing Oh-fer dropped his batting average to .125. Lawrie, a career .264 hitter, was traded to the A's in the offseason after four seasons with the Blue Jays.

The good thing? Still 160 games to go. The bad? Still 160 games to go.

Umpire gets hits by drink after ejecting player

A Toronto Blue Jays fan— apparently angry about one of the team's players getting ejected earlier in the game— tossed a drink at the offending umpire as he was walking off the field.

Before getting doused by the cup of Molson, umpire Bill Miller tossed Jays' third baseman Brett Lawrie for arguing a called third strike and tossing his batting helmet.  The scull bucket bounced off the dirt and into Miller's feet.  Lawrie was immediately ejected and could face suspension.

As Miller was exiting the field, a cup of liquid flew out of the stands and hit the ump in the right shoulder.  The fired up hoser was easily picked out of the crowd by mounties and other umps.

What's up with that, eh?  Oh, that's right—  the void of any Canadian teams left in the NHL playoffs has left Jays fans feeling a little bluer.
