Pacquiao Looks Ageless After Dominating Victory Over Broner

While many have been looking at boxer Manny Pacquiao as past his prime in recent years, the future Hall of Famer looked ten years younger after convincingly defeating American challenger Adrien Broner to retain his WBA welterweight title in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

No, make that 11 years younger.

The 40 year-old Pacquiao (61-7-2) won a unanimous decision (117-111, 116-112, 116-112) over the 29 year-old Broner (33-4-1) defending his 147-pound belt in dominating fashion in front of 13,000 appreciative fans at the MGM Grand Arena.

It was Pacquiao's first fight in the United States in over two years and his first bout since a title-winning seventh-round knockout of Lucas Matthysse in July in Malaysia. Now fight fans are hoping last night's bout could serve as an tempting incentive for a rematch with another perennial — Floyd Mayweather Jr..

Pacquiao claimed a shoulder injury limited his effectiveness going into that Mayweather fight and has expressed his desire for another shot at the champ after losing a unanimous decision to him back in 2015. Mayweather was ringside for last night's fight.

It was Pacquiao's first fight since turning 40 years old and the the first one since being reunited with his longtime trainer Freddie Roach after a brief separation.

The Filipino senator used body shots to work over Broner in the early rounds before unleashing a wild flurry of head shots in the seventh. Pacquiao completely controlled the tempo of the fight and the stats don't lie. During the 12 rounds bout he landed 82 of 197 power punches to 39 of 180 for Broner. Pacquiao connected on 47 body shots. Broner landed a grand total of three.

"I don't believe my career is over," the boundless Pacquiao said after the bout. " I proved it again at the age of forty."

On the other side, Broner's remarks after the fight might not be ageless, but they certainly will be timeless.

Manny Pacquiao says gay couples are 'worse than animals'

Floyd Mayweather may the poster boy for controversy in boxing, but now his long time rival Manny Pacquiao has sparked his own sort of uproar in the Philippines after describing gay couples as "worse than animals."

Nearing the end of a mostly unblemished boxing career, Paquiao has turned himself into a conservative, Bible-thumping politician as the eight-time world champion heads into the country's May senate elections — where he is seeking a seat.

And, whether or not you agree with his views, they sure sparked a worldwide firestorm.

"It's common sense. Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female," Pacquiao told local broadcaster TV5 in an interview aired earlier this week. 

         "If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals."

The 37-year-old fighter later took to Instagram to apologize for his remarks, but stuck to his beliefs. 

"I'm sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I've hurt. I still stand on my belief that I'm against same-sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I'm not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I'm praying for you."

Pacquiao gave the television interview as part of his campaign for one of 12 seats in the nationally-elected senate. The most recent surveys suggest he would win.

Gay marriage is banned in the Philippines due to strong opposition from the Catholic Church —where 80 percent of the country's 100 million people are Catholic.

Same-sex marriages are officiated at small churches but these unions are not recognized by the church or the state.

Ronda Rousey, the UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion, and one the most popular fighters in mixed martial arts, was honored Wednesday when she was named an ESPY award winner for Best Fighter.

Rousey did not have an award ceremony. Insead, she was rather casually presented with the award on the red carpet, at which point she decided to stare directly into the camera and use the moment to diss Floyd Mayweather Jr..

“I wonder how Floyd feels being beat by a woman for once,” she said with a cold glare then a laugh. “I'd like to see him pretend to not know who I am now.”

On Tuesday, Mayweather told a group of reporters that he was unaware of Rousey's existence. “I don't even know who he is,” Mayweather said before being corrected and told that Rousey is indeed a woman. “I ain't know who that is,” he maintained.

Rousey says she'll never fight a man but, let’s see how this rolls out.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight took about five years to finally arrange so I’m just guessing that we could see a Mayweather-Rousey bout sometime around 2020 — probably when Money needs a little more spending cash.

Consensus welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. — still basking in his record-breaking pay-per-view fight against Manny Pacquiao — is reportedly considering making his scheduled late-summer bout the fighter's last — and on free TV.

Mayweather insisted after the May 2 defeat of Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas that he'd return for a 49th and final fight in September, and an industry source told CBSSports.com on Wednesday that a short list of opponents is being pondered for a Sept. 12 event that could be broadcast live on CBS.

An announcement is possible as soon as the end of the week, the source said.

“Absolutely,” he said. “One-hundred percent serious.”

The 38-year-old Mayweather signed a six-fight deal with Showtime Networks — a wholly-owned subsidiary of the CBS Corporation — in February 2013 and has since defeated Robert Guerrero, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Marcos Maidana (twice) and Pacquiao.

That relationship between Showtime and CBS has always made a Mayweather fight on the broadcast network a possibility and what better way to say goodbye to the fight game than a free gift to his fans.

The Pacquiao fight generated 4.4 million buys for a joint Showtime-HBO production and made Mayweather — who pocketing more than $200 million from the bout — the highest paid athlete in the world.

A Mayweather win in September would leave him with a record of 49-0 — which would tie him with legendary heavyweight Rocky Marciano's remarkable run before his untimely death.

It's hard to believe Mayweather would leave that milestone hanging but a source suggested Mayweather's retirement was likely because of diminished passion for the sport and the business.

"After five more fights get me to 49-0, guess what?” he once said. “I think we may stay in the sport. We may just stay a little longer."

But later pulled back, saying “We don't know. Only time will tell. Hopefully, I'll keep my fingers crossed, but by that time I'll be 40 years old.”

Meanwhile, veteran matchmaker/businessman Rick Glaser thinks it'll be at least 2016 before Mayweather finally hangs up his gloves.

“Highly unlikely (he retires in September),” Glaser told CBSSports.com.

Still, fighting on free TV would be nice.

Manny Pacquiao hardly needs any added motivation in preparation of his May 2 fight against Floyd Mayweather, but a personalized gift from celebrity lawyer Robert Shapiro has provided some nevertheless.

The Filipino fighter laughed with trainer Freddie Roach on Monday after Shapiro, most known for representing O.J. Simpson in the infamous 1995 trial, gave him a custom-made speedbag with Mayweather's face painted on it.

Muhammad Ali has finally weighed in the upcoming Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight and The Greatest wants the Filipino boxer to triumph over his American opponent in their long awaited bout on May 2.

Ali's daughter, Rasheda Ali, revealed that her father respects Pacquiao's abilities inside the ropes — but also admires how he handles himself away from the ring.

"My dad is team Pacquiao all the way," she told TMZ. "My dad really likes Manny, he's a huge fan of his.

"He knows Manny's a great fighter but it's more about what he does outside the ring. He's such a charitable person."

Rasheda added that her father acknowledges Mayweather's own boxing capabilities but admitted he wasn't all in on the flamboyant fighter's lifestyle.

"My dad stood for things. Mayweather... I don't think there's a comparison," she said, before revealing that Ali will not be in attendance for the fight in Las Vegas on May 2 but will watch it on television.

"There's no question he's going to order it," Rasheda said. "It takes my dad way back to when he was fighting."

With the bout a little over a month away, Pacquiao has kept supporters updated with his progress ahead of the showdown.

Pacquiao posted pictures on Instagram of him training and showed his sense of humor by also uploading a video of him running up a long line of steps, reenacting the famous scene from the film Rocky.

Tim Tebow visits Manny Pacquiao at training camp (PHOTOS)

Manny Pacquiao got a little lift in the spiritual department when he welcomed Tim Tebow to his training camp Saturday.

While Pacquiao prepares for his much-anticipated May 2 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas, the Heisman Trophy-winner posted photos on Instagram of the two together in Pacquiao's gym in Los Angeles.

Besides their strong Christian beliefs, both men have ties to the Philippines. Tebow was born on one of the islands to missionary parents and Manny, well ...  he is the unofficial face of the country.

Pacquiao spokesman Fred Sternburg said Tebow and Pacquiao are friends and they embraced when Tebow came to the gym.

Promoter Bob Arum was also there and they watched Pacquiao spar seven rounds, he said.

"Bob said when he left Tebow was still there," Sternburg said. "They seemed to be getting along."

Manny Pacquiao is pretty good at a lot of things — boxing, basketball ... did I mention boxing? Hoops aside, one talent PacMan really enjoys showing off is his love of song.

And, while the boxer prepares for his May 2 fight against undefeated Floyd Mayweather, the Filipino hit the studio and laid down a track titled “Lalaban ako para sa Pilipino” or “I will fight for the Philippines,” which he plans to use as his entrance song.

Mayweather-Pacquaio WBC title belt will have new look : Report

The boxing world finally has the high-profile fight it has been waiting for, so it's only fitting it gets a special championship belt to match its record-breaking purse.

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman announced the winner of the long-awaited bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will receive a new belt to highlight the event's importance.

The WBC's official site passed along comments from Sulaiman, who also applauded both fighters for putting their legacies on the line:

"For this special recognition I would like to have emeralds or platinum, but everything will be defined during the next weeks. This is because of the magnitude of the event, which will be broadcast via TV networks globally.

"It came in a good moment and it will be an emotive event. Both are obviously putting their legacy at stake, to prove who's the best, satisfying an enormous created expectance. They are also competing to be considered one of the best 10 fighters in the entire boxing history."

The May 2 fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is the most expensive sporting ever promoted — with $250,000 ringside seats — so a new belt to commemorate the historic welterweight encounter seems apropos.

Sulaiman didn’t reveal any details about the new belt but, I'm guessing it'll be real sparkly.

For more than five years fight fans have screamed for a meeting between the two best fighters in the world, and after various failed negotiations and teases — Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have agreed to get it on May 2 to unify the fighters' welterweight world titles at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

After what seemed like the most intense speculation of any sporting event in history, Pacquiao (57-5-2) and Mayweather (47-0) have finally agreed to put it all on the line in Las Vegas for an estimated purse of $250 million (60/40 in Mayweather’s favor because that was the only way he’d agree to the fight.)

Mayweather made the announcement on Friday afternoon on a social media venue called  “Shots.”, where he wrote:

"What the world has been waiting for has arrived. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, is a done deal.”

"I promised the fans we would get this done, and we did," he added, posting a picture of a signed contract.

Mayweather and Pacquaio meet up at Miami Heat game

The most awesome thing happened at a Miami Heat game and it had nothing to do with basketball.

After Manny Pacquaio’s flight was canceled due to Winter Storm Juno, he was at the Heat-Bucks game in Miami at the same time Floyd Mayweather showed up. The two fighters met at halftime, and shook hands after a few words and a once over. It was reportedly the first time either boxer had spoken to each other face-to-face although they have been mouthing off to each other via Twitter for what seems like ages.

According to the Associated Press, the meeting went down like this:

”PACQUIAO SAYS MAYWEATHER GAVE HIM HIS CELL NUMBER AND TOLD HIM IT’S TIME FOR THEM TO WORK THIS FIGHT OUT THEMSELVES. PAC SAYS HE GOT TOLD 1 MINUTE BEFORE HALFTIME THAT FLOYD WAS COMING OVER FOR A CHAT. PACQUIAO SAID HE NEVER SPOKE TO FLOYD IN PERSON BEFORE TONIGHT. THANK WINTER STORM JUNO IF THIS FIGHT EVER HAPPENS. PAC WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TONIGHT — BUT HIS FLIGHT WAS CANCELED.”

It all raises the possibility of the two getting together to fight in what would likely be the highest grossing pay-per-view event in television history. Although they still don’t have a fight date maybe last night's personal touch will speed things up.

Asked to clarify if the exchange meant the two fighters would negotiate directly about meeting in the ring, Pacquiao said that was the case.

Mayweather did not respond to questions. “Not now,” one of his security guards said, as Mayweather punched in the digits.

Hopefully it wasn't another snow job.

Mayweather heckled by fans calling for Pacquiao fight at Clippers game (VIDEO)

Floyd Mayweather's appearance at the Clippers-Nets game with celebrity pals Justin Bieber, Beyonce and Jay Z drew a lot of attention courtside at the Staples Center Thursday night.

And maybe more than the boxer wanted.

As the undefeated welterweight champ tried to enjoy the Clippers 123-84 blowout, more than a few fans used the opportunity to heckle Mayweather about avoiding a fight with Manny Pacquaio by chanting "We want Pacquiao, we want Pacquiao."

Negotiations between the two fighters are still ongoing as the boxing world waits for some sort of confirmation of the $200 million mega fight.

Pacquiao has already agreed to Mayweather's terms for the eagerly-awaited fight which has been penciled in for May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. But the Filipino, who has given Mayweather a Jan. 31 deadline to commit, is already scouting out a potential bout with Amir Khan if a deal doesn't materialize.

Mayweather calls out Pacquiao for May 2 fight in Las Vegas (VIDEO)

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has finally said the words boxing fans have been demanding and named May 2 as the date for a long-awaited fight with Manny Pacquiao.

The richest fight in boxing history is now the closest ever to becoming reality.

The super-fight had been highly speculated after Pacquiao's impressive 12-round unanimous decision over Chris Algieri in Macau two weeks ago. Now that both fighters have called each other out, hopefully the welterweights will answer the bell.

Mayweather was videotaped naming the date after he was pressed by a reporter at one of his promotion companies' events.

"Will I fight Pacquiao? Absolutely," the holder of the mythical title of best pound-for-pound fighter in the world said.

When asked if it would be his next fight he replied, "Absolutely."

As to when the world can expect the $300 million fight, Money said, "May 2, absolutely."

"The public wants this fight. I want it. the only stumbling block has been Bob Arum (Pacquiao's promoter), " he added.  "But I think both fighters want it. So it's time to get it on."

Mayweather admitted for the first time that negotiations are underway "behind the scenes." 

"I'm not ducking anyone, so let's get this on."

Mayweather still blamed Pacquiao for the fight setbacks.

"Years ago we had problems with random blood and urine testing. I just want to have an even playing field.

"Now he's in a very, very tight situation with his loss to (Juan Manuel) Marquez and his loss to (Timothy) Bradley. His pay-per-view numbers are extremely low, so he's desperate. I wanted that fight a long time ago."

So has the boxing world.

Floyd Mayweather is ready to name Amir Khan as his opponent for his ring return on May 3 within the next week. Khan confirmed earlier this month that he had already signed a contract to fight the pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter in the world.

But the talk — as always— is still about Money meeting Manny Pacquaio.

On Wednesday,  Mayweather, who is on a week-long tour of South Africa, said Pacquiao's recent ring losses and financial circumstances could make the Filipino a little more flexible in his demands for the fight everyone wants.

"I offered Manny Pacquiao the fight before," said Mayweather. "We didn't see eye to eye on terms. Years later we come back and I try and make the fight happen again. I offer him $40 million. He said he wanted 50-50. So we didn't make the fight happen."

"All of a sudden, he [Pacquiao] loses to Timothy Bradley, he loses to [Juan Manuel] Marquez... he has tax problems now," he went on.

"So, two losses and tax problems later, now he all of a sudden want to say: 'You know what? I’d do anything to make the fight happen,' when he’s really saying: 'Floyd, can you help me solve my tax problems, get me out of debt?'"

In previous negotiations, both fighters disagreed on the split. Mayweather wanted 60-40 and Pacquiao wanted an even cut. With a reported $68 million delinquent tax bill hounding the Philippines senator, he just might be desperate for a lesser percentage of the potentially record-breaking pot.

The 36-year-old Mayweather is also considering a fight with Marcos Maidana who inflicted a first defeat on Adrien Broner last month.

But Broner has exercised his right to a rematch and will have his chance for immediate revenge in the spring.

So that, along with Mayweather's logic, leaves the door slightly open for what would probably be the last opportunity of a Mayweather-Pacquiao clash.

But we've heard that before.

Pacquiao dedicates Rios fight to Typhoon Haiyan victims

While millions of Filipinos struggle to comeback from the devastating Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao is planning to dedicate his own comeback fight as inspiration to the victims in his native country.

Over 600,000 Filipinos remain homeless while looting, gunfire and desperation have taken over his homeland. Pacquiao believes the best way to bring hope to his hungry and thirsty countrymen is to win his Nov. 24 fight against Brandon Rios.

Pacquiao's heart-wrenching decision to fight while the distractions of the storm and its after effects surround him will not stop the Filipino congressman from his training schedule.

Veteran trainer Freddie Roach insists it is for the best. In what he called a "statement to his people," the 34-year-old Pacquiao said: "I really want to visit the area and personally do what I can to help our countrymen who have suffered so much in this terrible tragedy. But I'm in deep training for a crucial fight so I regret I cannot go."

"I will send help to those who need it the most," he added, "and I join all of you to pray for our country and people in these trying times."

Pacquiao's adviser Michael Koncz told the Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday that the former champion was hoping to visit devastated parts of the Philippines after his fight at the Venetian Casino's Cotai Arena in Macau, and wants to cheer them up with a victory.

Koncz, who is in camp with the boxer in General Santos, said he is declining interview requests for Pacquiao in a bid to lock out any distractions. He said Pacquiao's camp had been watching developments and getting frequent updates in the wake of the typhoon, and it was difficult for the former champion not to go out and help.

"Manny's desire was to go to that area and to visit them and lift the spirits," Koncz said. "But we have the most important fight of his career. His heart and prayers go out to the survivors and the victim's families. Absolutely, he is dedicating this fight to the victims of this."

Pacquiao and his team leave for Macau on Monday. "It's been one of the best camps I can remember. No tensions within everyone dedicated to our jobs and working hard," Konzc said. "Manny's in the best physical condition he can be in. His mindset is on showing the world he can still compete to the highest level."

The one-time pound-for-pound champion has said the Rios fight, his first of the year, will be the start of his intended return to his peak form and to show that consecutive losses to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez are not the start of a decline. 

More importantly, a win by the Filipino idol might bring bring just a little glimmer of hope and happiness to those people's shattered lives.

Just two days before Pacquiao gets ready face Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time on Saturday night, the talk, as always, turned to the Fight of the Century.   Now it is being reported that Mayweather turned down a $100 million offer to face Pacquiao.

Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank joined ESPN 1100 in Las Vegas with Gridlock to talk about Saturday's rematch.  Asked if he thinks a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather will ever happen, Arum dropped this little bit of info:

"We had an offer, a legitimate offer on the table for 180 million dollars and people due to fight and had a big upside of 180 for the two fight camps. That's when he said 55-45 which would've given Mayweather 100 million. (Pacquiao) would've ended up with 80 million and that's still a lot of money right? But Mayweather will not fight him. Now why am I saying that? I'm not saying it to be, I know the guy and I know what his problem is, Mayweather, because we had him for 10 and a half years and his problem was he hated, he never wanted to face a southpaw and a southpaw that can move and punch with his left hand makes Mayweather completely vulnerable."

If the biggest payday in boxing history couldn't entice Mayweather to get into the ring with Pac Man, what's the problem?

Mayweather's former BFF, rapper 5o Cent, thinks he knows why the fighter keeps turning down the possibility of a Pacquiao fight even with the huge $180 million offer that Arum reportedly has from Dubai on the table.

One loss, the aspiring boxing promoter told The Associated Press, and Mayweather would probably never fight again.

"It's all confidence when it comes to Floyd and his  confidence wouldn't be there," said 50 Cent.  "He kind of hand picks who he fights instead of taking the tough fights."

Floyd Mayweather gets pedicure before heading to jail

World champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be better known for using his hands but, before he prepared to begin his three-month jail sentence for a domestic violence conviction, the boxer got a pedicure.

Mayweather who surrendered himself to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas Friday morning revealed he spent some his final free moments getting a pedicure at home before heading to the joint.

The fighter tweeted a photo of himself stretched back on a couch while a young women attended to his toenails.

Got to have good looking feet when you put on a pair of those orange jail slippers— don't want to offend your cellie.

Mayweather is looking at a stint of 87 days— with time off for good behavior— in a 6 x 10 cell.  It's a little smaller than the 20 x 20 boxing ring he's used to working in and about the size of one of his closets in his Las Vegas mansion.

He later posted a second image showing "me & my daughter spending precious time together before I leave my family, friends and fans."

See you later this summer Money.  I'm sure Manny Pacquiao will still be waiting.

Spike and Mayweather hug it out courtside

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.— who tweeted derogatory comments about New York Knicks phenom Jeremy Lin being over-hyped because he was Asian— was spotted courtside making nice with the team's No. 1 fan Spike Lee last night in Miami.

Mayweather approached the Knicks fanatic during New York's 102-88 loss to the Miami Heat and the two shook hands, chatted and appeared to bury the hatchet.

Lee held a grudge against Mayweather because earlier this month the welterweight champ criticized— via Twitter— all of the attention Lin was getting based solely on his race.

"Jeremy Lin is a good player, but all the hype is because he's Asian," tweeted Mayweather.  "Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise."

Lee took offense to the comment and immediately tweeted back .

"Floyd Mayweather I Hope You Watched Jeremy Hit The Gamewinning 3 Pointer With .005 Seconds Left.Our Guy Can BALL PLAIN AND SIMPLE.RECOGNIZE."

After last night's meeting, it looked like there was a truce.

"Floyd Mayweather And I Had A Great Conversation Courtside," Lee tweeted after the game.  "We're MAD COOL.ALL    LOVE.2Brotha's.YA-DIG."

Meanwhile, another huge Lin fan— and Mayweather's biggest rival— Manny Pacquiao was a little bummed out that he didn't get to see the Knicks player while he was in New York this week.

"It's too bad that I didn't get a chance to watch the game," said the welterweight at a press conference promoting his June 9 fight against Tim Bradley.  "He's a good basketball player.  I'm proud of him because he's from Asia."

Lin is actually from Palo Alto, Calif. but his parents are from Taiwan.

Pacquiao has also been the target of some of Mayweather's anti-Asian rants in the past.

Mayweather had the last laugh for now— after Lin was held to 1-of-11 shooting while turning the ball over eight times last night— but he will be headed to the cLINk in June for a domestic violence conviction.
