Texas A&M coaches' sexist slideshow gets them temporarily canned

Texas A&M has suspended a pair of assistant football coaches for two weeks for what the school has described as a “failed attempt at humor” with a sexist slide show at a football clinic Wednesday night.

Their timing was really off when the two men picked a "Chalk Talk" event to show off their boys club comedic stylings in front of an audience of which was mostly women.

Photos that were shared on social media of the presentations displayed throughout the night showed sexist content — from the rewritten War Hymn to other “football rules” — and much of it could only be construed as having a sexual double entendre.

Coach Kevin Sumlin announced Friday night that offensive line coach Jim Turner and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks have been suspended without pay and will have to serve 20 hours of community service.

“There is absolutely no place in our program or in our University community for inappropriate conduct or degrading comments towards women, or anyone, regardless of intent,” Sumlin said.

Sumlin said he attended the event but was interacting with attendees and was unaware of the content in the presentation by Turner and Banks until Friday.

“On behalf of Aggie Football, I want to apologize for the comments at Chalk Talk and also for my failure to review their individual presentations,” Sumlin said. “I want to thank the almost 700 women who came out this week who not only participated in the program but who supported a worthy cause in the Twin City Mission.”

The Aggies will begin preseason practice next week and open the season Sept. 3 at home against UCLA.

Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel denies he ever supported student movement: Report

Only days after being hailed as a hero for a tweet he wrote supporting the #ConcernedStudent1950 movement against racism at the University of Missouri, football coach Gary Pinkel stated that not only did he not author the now famous tweet, he said he does not support the #ConcernedStudent1950 movement.

Pinkel distanced himself from the Concerned Student 1950 movement Tuesday during a radio interview with Kevin Kietzman on WHB (810 AM).

The interviewer asked Pinkel, "Did you personally support #ConcernedStudent1950? Are you for what they are about?"

Pinkel, leaving absolutely no doubt, responded, "No. Not at all. My decision had nothing to do with it."

The coach, who will resign at the end of the season after being diagnosed with lymphoma cancer, said that someone on his staff wrote the tweet, which contained a picture of players, coaches and staff — black and white — indicating the team’s unity in support of a players boycott, and was marked with his initials as if he wrote it,

He added that they were wrong for doing so.

“What happened was that I have somebody that tweets for me a lot to get information out, and that person should not have put that hashtag on,” Pinkel told Kietzman. “That organization can do what they want to, no judgments on them at all, but that should not have come out.”

Pinkel's seemingly public stand, which was covered by virtually every news broadcast and sports radio show in the country, was credited with having a lot to do with the college actually acknowledging the concerns of black students on the campus and help oust President Tim Wolfe. 

The coach has consistently said he was supporting his players, who were motivated to help bring MU graduate student Jonathan Butler’s hunger strike to an end. Butler stopped eating Nov. 2 and vowed to starve to death unless Wolfe stepped down or was fired.

In the end, he is just a football coach.

Female kicker makes historic extra point for Kent State football team (VIDEO)

The kick wasn't perfect, but that hardly mattered to April Goss when she finally got her big chance to get on the football field. In doing so, Goss made the extra point — and history.

A four-year member of Kent State's football team, Goss kicked the extra point in the first half Saturday in a 45-13 win over Delaware State, becoming the second woman to score in a major college football game. 

Katie Hnida kicked a pair of extra points for New Mexico in 2003. Goss, who was a soccer player in high school before deciding to try football, appears to be the only woman currently on a Division I roster.

Wearing No. 91, Goss made the kick with 4:30 left in the second quarter, giving the Golden Flashes a 29-6 lead.

"I was a little disappointed I didn't make a better kick. I was sure it was going right, but it did go through," said Goss after the game. "I'll probably beat myself up for that for a little while, but it was awesome."

BYU lineman gives nut shot to Boise St. player during scrum (VIDEO)

During a first-half scrum during Saturday’s wild game between BYU and Boise State in Provo, Cougars offensive lineman Ului Lapuaho was caught punching Broncos safety Chanceller James directly in the nuts during a tussle for the ball.

Lapuaho's cheap shot might warrant a collective groan from male viewers, but let's credit James, who still held on to the pigskin while Lapuaho was going after his boys.

Virginia Tech to honor WDBJ-7 shooting victims with helmet sticker (PHOTO)

Virginia Tech will honor the lives of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, the WDBJ-7 journalists tragically killed by a gunman last week, with a special helmet decal for the season opener at Lane Stadium against No. 1 Ohio State on Sept 7.

The decal design will feature the number seven, with teal and maroon ribbons to honor both Parker (favorite color) and Ward (a 2011 VT grad). The official release from the school details the multiple scholarships that have been set up in their name, including ways to give, and some of the other ways the Hokies have been paying respects over the last week.

The nationally-televised Monday night game will close out this season's first weekend of college football.

Parker Boudreaux — Division I football's most highly sought lineman — had narrowed down his decision to play at either Clemson, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma or Georgia Southern.

On Thursday, the 4-star offensive tackle from Orlando, FL found a creative way to announce where he'll play in 2016.

The 6'4", 288-pound Brock Lesnar lookalike revealed his decision after pulling a 16,000-pound school bus over the logo over the school he chose.

Media interviews are occasionally interrupted by a kiss on the cheek — at least from your mom, girlfriend or wife — and are not so uncommon. But how does a player react when that peck on your face comes from a teammate?

We found out when Baylor's Spencer Drango was left a little stunned after the Bears' Shawn Oakman kissbombed his pre-Cotton Bowl media session with a fleeting show of affection.

Oakman's buss on the cheek was totally unexpected, but Drango handled it pretty well.

Nebraska football player's selfie with wild raccoon goes wrong (PHOTO)

A Nebraska football player had the bright idea of taking a selfie with a wild raccoon he spotted on the roadside — and says he unintentionally killed the animal with a wrench after it bit him on the calf.

The Cornhuskers defensive lineman got out of his pickup truck and tried to take a photo with the animal using his cellphone, but the raccoon attacked, biting Gangwish during the encounter.

“It was a raccoon selfie gone completely wrong,” Gangwish said about the photo he posted and later removed from Twitter.

Gangwish, told The Lincoln Journal Star he knew the raccoon would have to be tested for rabies, so he attempted to subdue it with a crescent wrench from his truck. 

The animal died, however.

“It was death by crescent wrench,” the 6-foot-2, 260-pound player joked.

Luckily for Gangwish, the tests were negative.

Hawaii announcer apologizes for calling Fresno 'The Armpit of America' (VIDEO)

After Fresno State held on for a 28-21 victory over Hawaii in Fresno on Saturday, the Rainbow Warriors play-by-play announcer Robert Kekaula signed off the broadcast by saying "Goodnight from the armpit of America."

Words the California valley city didn't take too well:

According to The Fresno Bee's Bryant-Jon Anteola, Kekaula has since sent a letter of apology to Fresno State.

In the second quarter of the Commonwealth Cup between Virginia and Virginia Tech, 295-pound defensive tackle David Dean grabbed a deflected pass hanging in the air and rumbled into the end zone for the score and a 13-10 Cavaliers lead. 

The giant lineman wasn't too winded since the pick-6 rumble was all of five yards:

Duke football assistant loses it in locker room rant before UNC game (VIDEO)

Duke Blue Devils assistant Chris Hoover went nuts trying to pump up his team in the locker room before their game against the North Carolina Tarheels Thursday night. 

Hoover screams, throws a chair and just totally loses it trying to fire up the troops.

The tirade didn't help and the Tarheels routed the Blue Devils 45-20.

Next time put a little more oomph into it.

Northwestern players got really excited about Chick-fil-A after upsetting Notre Dame (VIDEO)

The Northwestern football team was pretty stoked after upsetting No. 16 Notre Dame, 43-40, in overtime on Saturday.

But while the Wildcats were full of joy after shocking the Fighting Irish, nothing could prepare them for the excitement of seeing a Chick-fil-A dinner waiting for them when they exited the field.

"And we got Chick-fil-A! This is the best day ever!"

Indeed it was.



Imagine if they ever got into a Chick-fil-A Bowl game?

Penn State players facing discipline in egg-throwing incident: Report

Four Penn State football players were cited after what officials call an egg-throwing incident at a campus building the night before Halloween.

Since three of the Nittany Lions players are from New Jersey, we'll just call it "Mischief Night."

Team officials confirmed Saturday that center Wendy Laurent, defensive end Garrett Sickels, tight end Brent Wilkerson and reserve safety Anthony Smith were involved in Thursday night's incident at Beaver Hall, according to Pennlive.com.

According to Centre County court records, all were issued non-traffic criminal mischief citations.

Coach James Franklin said after Saturday's game against Maryland that the situation would be addressed with the administration, the players and their families.

He said egg-throwing was "far down the totem pole" among the problems in college athletics, but "It still needs to be fixed. I can guarantee it will be."

Laurent, Wilkerson and Sickles all played in Saturday's 20-19 loss to Maryland. Laurent made his first career start because of injuries to the offensive line.

BYU's Taysom Hill out for year after breaking leg against Utah (VIDEO)

Taysom Hill, the star quarterback for No. 18 BYU and a Heisman Trophy hopeful, will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his left leg Friday night.

Hill suffered the disastrous break during BYU's 35-20 loss to Utah State in Provo, Utah. He is scheduled for surgery Saturday and will be out three to four months.

The respective BYU losses also take away any chance for their national playoff dreams.

Hill was scrambling right in the second quarter when Utah State safety Brian Suite pulled him down, landing awkwardly on Hill's lower left leg. He limped off the field before being carted away to the locker room.

"It was really difficult to watch Taysom go down," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "Our execution will now have to be better from top to bottom because of Taysom's ability to create. There just isn't another Taysom Hill out there anywhere."

Hill, a junior, had completed eight of 11 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown before limping off the field. He also had run seven times for 35 yards and a score.

Backup quarterback Christian Stewart threw three interceptions.

Hill is one of the top running quarterbacks in the country. He entered Friday tied for first in the country among QBs with seven rushing TDs, and his 107.0 yards on the ground per game ranked third.

The team captain had averaged 219 passing yards per game with a 66 percent completion rate through the Cougars' four-game winning streak to start the season.

Senior transfer Stewart will be the Cougars' starter from this point on, Mendenhall said, as they have only two other quarterbacks on the roster, both of whom are freshmen.

Tony Washington's 'bow' helps Arizona beat Oregon (GIF)

The second-ranked Oregon Ducks lost at home last night (this morning?) to Arizona 31-24, partially due to a ridiculous taunting penalty called at a crucial moment of the game.

Oregon defensive lineman Tony Washington sacked Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon on third down, but after the fourth quarter play ended Washington bowed toward the sideline in celebration and was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.  

The controversial call took Arizona's position of having fourth-and-goal from the 17 and turned it into a first down at Oregon's eight yard line. Three straight Terris Jones-Grigsby rushes later, the Wildcats scored a touchdown for the decisive 31-24 lead.

Maybe Washington should have just told the overzealous officials he was praying.

Rutgers AD Julie Hermann made crude Sandusky remark in staff meeting: Report

Just days after putting her foot down on Rutgers fans who called Penn State "Ped State" and other "regrettable actions," an investigation of the university's athletic director, Julie Herman, claims she reportedly once put that same foot in her mouth and made a questionable joke about the child sex scandal involving former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

A NJ Advance Media investigation that included statements from more than a half-dozen people inside the Rutgers athletic department, university officials acknowledged Hermann made the Sandusky-related remark at a staff meeting last fall.

"Julie's comment was an off the cuff response to a give-and-take interaction urging the fundraising team to reach out and touch the donors,'' said Pete McDonough, senior vice president for external affairs, when pressed for a statement from Rutgers President Robert Barchi. "There probably isn't a person alive today who hasn't made an impromptu remark in a private meeting that probably shouldn't have been said. Even taken out of context, this single comment was not directed at Penn State, its students, staff or faculty.''

Hermann, through spokesman Tom Luicci, declined comment, reported NJ.com. On Thursday, Luicci texted a NJ Advance Media reporter to cancel a meeting that had been scheduled earlier in the week.

Multiple people interviewed by NJ Advance Media — who would speak only on the condition of anonymity because they feared retribution — said Hermann was talking about "reaching out and touching the donors" of the program and her punchline was to not do it "in a Sandusky way."

"Everyone looked at each other and said, 'Say what?'" said a Rutgers official at the meeting. According to a second Rutgers employee, Hermann told her staff they are "all ambassadors for Rutgers. We have to reach out to our donors, fans, everyone, and we need to touch them. Not in a Jerry Sandusky-type way."

A third Rutgers official called Hermann's statement "a simple remark but one that resonated with us."

"I know there were two or three of us that looked at each other, and I said, "You gotta be kidding going down that road," the employee said. "Comparing relationships with donors or with people in organizations that we want to drum up and get money from in that relationship and saying we have to get close to them and touch them? And she goes 'not like Sandusky.' "

It's the latest in a series of missteps that have marked Hermann's rocky 17 months as athletic director at Rutgers. Nevertheless, McDonough issued a statement that strongly endorses Hermann's job performance.

"The University is not going to let a spontaneous, offhand remark obscure the fact that Julie is doing a great job as Athletics Director,'' McDonough said. "Bringing change always ruffles some feathers, but the results are clear -- ticket sales are setting new records for home and away games, the R-Care program is serving our student athletes' academic, social and personal well-being, and our fundraising up.''

Florida Atlantic football team practices with the Grim Reaper (PHOTO)

The Florida Atlantic football team was outscored a combined 96-7 by Nebraska and Alabama, respectively, in the first two games of the season. Although the Owls came to life and won their third game against Tulsa by 29, it isn't exactly a good sign to see the Grim Reaper show up on your practice field right before this week's game against 2-1Wyoming.

A cowboy in Laramie is one thing, but when the hooded guy who represents death takes in your workout, you better start checking your pulse.

Rhode Island player bleeds everywhere after helmet-less tackle (VIDEO)

Rhode Island defensive lineman Mike Rinaldi took a helmet square to the face from his teammate while making a tackle in the red zone against Marshall on Saturday night. When Rinaldi emerged from the pile-up, he had a huge gash in his forehead and his face was covered in blood. 

In the video below, you can see Rinaldi dragging down Marshall running back Devon Johnson when another RIU player comes flying in to help with the tackle. Unfortunately, for Rinaldi, his helmet flew off during the play, and his face collided with his teammate's face mask.

Marshall won 42-7.  But RIU might want to at least give a game ball to Rinaldi for his effort and another to the equipment manager — for the extra cleanup.

Dude pops fans' beach ball at football game, applauds himself (VIDEO)

During last weekend's football opener between Arizona and UNLV, one Wildcats fan got a little tired of the crowd having too much fun bouncing a beach ball around the stands.

So when the colorful ball ended up in his direction, the grumpy man in khaki shorts ruined everybody's fun by stomping every last breath from its being before unceremoniously flinging the flattened plastic remains to the crowd. 

And then, as sickened fans watched, the D-bag applauding himself for what he perceived to be some appreciated task.

It's hard to know whether this guy has something against ubiquitous playthings or whimsical fun in general, but thankfully the nearest beach is about 500 miles away or we might have serial beach ball killer on our hands.
