Former Miami Dolphin, Rob Konrad swims 9 miles to shore after falling off boat: Report

Some retired NFL players wear their team's namesake on their sleeve but, in this case, maybe carries it on his fin.

Former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad turned into a human Flipper after he swam nine miles back to shore after falling off his boat while fishing alone off the South Florida coast on Wednesday — and is OK.

The U.S. Coast Guard said that Konrad — who played for the Dolphins from 1999 to 2004 — had gone fishing by himself after being dropped off at a Boca Raton dock. Friends became concerned after he didn't meet them for dinner, and the Coast Guard later sent a helicopter to scour the Atlantic Ocean looking for him.

The Coast Guard said Konrad apparently fell off the 36-foot boat, which had been on auto pilot.

Unable to get back to the boat, Konrad began swimming toward shore. He made it some time after 4 a.m. Thursday and contacted the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office — after surviving almost 10 hours of swimming in the chilly water.

Officials say the 38-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for possible hypothermia.

After playing four years at Syracuse, Konrad was drafted by the Dolphins in 1999, where he stayed for five years. And it sounds like he was born to be a Fish.

Syracuse trick play against NC State goes all wrong (VIDEO)

Syracuse attempted a trick play against North Carolina State on Saturday. It was a jet sweep, reverse, flea flicker ... I think.

Watch as Syracuse Orange turns into a lemon:

Syracuse QB Terrel Hunt ejected for throwing punch at linebacker (VIDEO)

Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt's 2014 season probably didn't start off the way he wanted it to.

With 'Cuse use leading Villanova 10-7 in the first quarter, Hunt was tackled and felt that linebacker Dillon Lucas dived in with a late hit after he was already down. Hunt retaliated with a left hook to the 'Nova defender's face mask.

Hunt was ejected from the game and redshirt freshman Austin Wilson came in to relieve the starter.

As Section 6.1 of the NCAA rule book states: "When a player is disqualified from the game due to a flagrant personal foul, that team's conference shall automatically initiate a video review for possible additional sanctions before the next scheduled game."

It'll be interesting to see if Syracuse coach Scott Shafer hands out any further punishment while Hunt works on his temper.

Watch reaction when Eagles fan Justin Pugh finds out he was drafted by Giants

When Justin Pugh finally got the call he was waiting for all Thursday night, it didn't come from the lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan's favorite team but from one of its most intense NFL rivals — the New York Giants.

The Syracuse offensive tackle breaks out in a broad smile when he takes the call and his family and friends wait — tighter than coiled cobras — while he makes nearly two minutes of small talk with the Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.  One of Pugh's buddies in an Eagles jersey grabs his head in disbelief when he first hears Pugh say "I'm excited to become a Giant."

At 1:55 of the video, Pugh hangs up and all hell breaks loose in his family's Bucks County home as his mom breaks out in tears and his buddies dog pile him.

“It was great,” Pugh said about being the 19th pick. “Coach Coughlin was the first one to call me. When we did the interview at the [NFL] Combine, coach Coughlin asked me who was the best player who ever played at Syracuse and I told him, ‘Coach Coughlin.’ That was the one that sealed the deal for me as soon as I said that. We’re a couple of Syracuse guys and I’m staying in state. They told me that I would come in and compete wherever they see fit. I’m just going to go in and do what I have to do, play hard-nosed football.”

Look at it this way, Pugh's family and friends are only a N.J. Turnpike drive from Philly to MetLife Stadium and the two teams meet at least twice a season. And he's playing in New York.  Can't get any better than that.

Pinstripe Bowl turns into a Winter Wonderland

Almost 40,000 fans showed up yesterday at Yankee Stadium to watch Syracuse defeat West Virginia, 38-14, in the third annual New Era Pinstripe Bowl and — while Orange and Mountaineers fans were bursting with school pride before the game — stadium groundskeepers were busting a sweat to prepare the field.

When you think of the House That Jeter Built, you usually envision sultry summer nights with old No. 2 at shortstop — not a snowman filling in the gap between second and third.  Although there have been some flurries on more than a few of the early April Opening days.

The New York Yankees must have been pretty impressed with the job the crew did.  The team's  official Twitter feed provided this photo of the field one hour before the game Saturday afternoon and showed the amazing job the grounds crew did before the opening kickoff.

The Pinstripe Bowl is the only college bowl game played in a presumably cold weather site but snow is usually a rarity around the holidays in New York City.

If Saturday's game looked like a throwback to the Army and New York Giants home games, which ripped up the old Yankee Stadium turf, it wasn't a problem yesterday.

One guy who would agree that the groundskeepers did a good job was Syracuse running back Prince-Tyson Gulley who had 264 total yards in his team's victory.

The grounds crew at MetLife Stadium might want to take notes from Saturday's game in preperation for when Super Bowl XLVIII comes to New Jersey on Feb. 2, 2014.

There's a good chance the Meadowlands could see some of the white stuff that day.
