Hockey player handcuffed on ice after fighting with referee (VIDEO)

A Canadian junior hockey game looked more like an episode of Cops after a player was arrested for fighting with a referee on the ice.

Olivier Marcotte was handcuffed and subsequently arrested for allegedly spitting in the face of the linesman, before getting wrestled to the ice by the zebra on Sunday, according to Journal de Montreal.

The 21-year-old plays for the Junior AA Hockey-Experts out of Sherbrooke, Quebec. The bizarre sequence of events happened in the third period, after a heated verbal exchange with the referee.

After other referees helped subdue Marcotte, the Quebec provincial police walked out onto the ice to handcuff the hockey player — face down — all to a chorus of cheers.

"I thought I had seen everything in 20 years of hockey, but here, it's the first time!" said opposing coach Dominic Amyot.

The dramatic sequence of events, according to CBC.ca, began when Marcotte allegedly spat in the linesman's face before the pair became entangled and the young player appeared to throw a punch before being wrestled to the ice.

Marcotte was released from custody later that night and will likely not face any charges. His team lost 9-3 to Nicolet.

Mike Fisher knocks out Kevin Bieksa's tooth in fight (VIDEO)

In the scoreless first period of the Predators-Ducks game Tuesday night, Kevin Bieksa and Mike Fisher got into a tussle, with Fisher appearing to give the Anaheim defenseman a little free dental work.

And no, that isn't a Chicklet.

Kevan Miller gets decision against Joe Vitale in Bruins' first fight (VIDEO)

Don't let the Bruins' clean slate of fighting majors so far this season give you the notion that the Beantown brawlers have become more passive.

No sir.

That passivity ended in grand style during Saturday's contest against the Arizona Coyotes when

Arizona forward Joe Vitale grabbed a hold of Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller. The two first shared some unpleasant words before Vitale, probably now regretfully, dropped his gloves.

Vitale might have destroyed Miller's collar hanging on to his dignity, but his opponent gets the TKO.

Hockey goon slams opponent's head into ice during AHL fight (VIDEO)

During Friday night's AHL game between the Adirondack Flames and Rochester Americans, Trevor Gillies grabbed forward William Carrier's head and bashed it into the ice.  And it might be one of the most dastardly hockey goon moves you will ever see in the rink — which says a lot.

The 35-year-old Gillies — whose NHL career spanned a whole 42 games with the Islanders during his nearly 20 year pro hockey career — grabbed the Carrier, a St. Louis Blues pick who isn’t known as a fighter, with 3:09 left to play and began pounding the the 19-year-old Americans player with punches.

Carrier finally went to the ice in an attempt to avoid any more punishment before Gillies saw fit to grab the kid by the jersey and brutally slam his head to the ice.




Carrier was able to walk away from the mugging, but let's see if it gets Gillies a suspension.

Justin Johnson wins 'David & Goliath' match-up against John Scott (VIDEO)

Not even three minutes into the Islanders-Sabres game Sunday, Justin Johnson took on the hockey giant John Scott. It appeared to be a mismatch — as Johnson's listed at 6-foot-1, and Scott's listed at 6-foot-8 — unless you know what a tough guy Johnson really is.

Johnson, a 32-year-old rookie playing only the second NHL game of his career, just might have had something to prove. And, judging from the warmups, this bout (described as a "David & Goliath" by the announcer) was in the cards.

Johnson finally flattened his opponent with a hard left to Scott's chin— and because the Islander can take a punch. 

Ryan Clowe and Milan Lucic slug it out (VIDEO)

The New Jersey Devils wore their throw-back uniforms but couldn't revive those old winning ways Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins.  They lost their third straight 4-2 on home ice, and at least one Devils player took it literally on the chin.

Late in the first period, Ryan Clowe got frisky and slugged it out with Milan Lucic. The two respected brawlers battled evenly until Clowe took one to the jaw. 

So much for inspiring the team.

Penguins’ Robert Bortuzzo and Predators’ Colin Wilson in bloody ice brawl (VIDEO)

A first-period brawl between Penguins defenseman Robert Bortuzzo and Nashville center Colin Wilson Tuesday night left both skaters a bloody mess.

Both Bortuzzo and Wilson were hit with five-minute majors for fighting in the final minute of the first period.

The bare-knuckled bout was a draw, but the Penguins skated away with a 3-1victory.

Gazdic KOs Westgarth with one final punch during lengthy brawl (VIDEO)

As far as hockey fights go, this was a good one — until one final punch reminded everyone how bad these skirmishes can end.

Kevin Westgarth and Luke Gazdic exchanged punches during the latest installment of the Battle of Alberta between the Flames and Oilers Saturday night. And, for a while, the first period dust-up looked pretty even.

Just as the announcers observed the length of the brawl, Gazdic knocked Westgarth out with one last right-cross. Westgarth bounced his head violently off of the ice and didn't return to the game.

The Flames play the Wild in Minnesota on Monday, but Westgarth will not play. After the game, he was diagnosed with a head injury and traveled back to Calgary.

Here's a crowd-pleasing AHL goalie fight (VIDEO)

Yes there was a rare —but always crowd-pleasing— goalie fight Friday night.

Jeff Deslauriers of the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and John Gibson of the Norfolk Admirals came together at center ice during a stoppage in play, dropping the gloves and blockers in a quick scrap. It's hard to figure out why this scuffle started, although Gibson, as he was skating back to his net from the bench, skated right into Deslauriers, who wasted no time in getting the fight started.

Then a few other dances broke out on the ice.

According to the official game report on the AHL website, Deslauriers received two roughing minors, a fighting major and a game misconduct. Gibson was assessed only a pair of roughing minors.

USHL game suspended after player has seizure during fight (VIDEO)

There was a scary scene during a United States Hockey League —  the top junior A circuit in the U.S. —  Saturday night. A game between the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders was suspended when 18-year-old Dubuque defenseman Dylan Chanter was severely injured following a fight on the ice, reported CBS Sports.

Cedar Rapids had a 2-0 lead midway through the second period when the incident occurred. According to reports, Chanter's helmet came off during his fight and — after he was hit multiple times by the RoughRiders' Corey Petrash — lost his balance and fell before having a frightening seizure on the ice.

Jeffrey Johnson of the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported on the incident:

Chanter scrapped with Corey Petrash of the RoughRiders in the corner behind the Dubuque net. The 18-year-old from Armstrong, British Columbia, lost his balance and fell backward, hitting his helmetless head on the ice (dyed pink for a cancer promotion) and dislocating his left shoulder.

The crowd cheered until seeing Chanter begin to severely convulse. His full-body seizure lasted at least two minutes, as team trainers and the RoughRiders' team doctor rushed to him.

He remained on the ice until paramedics arrived on the scene roughly 15 minutes later.

Chanter was conscious and moving when taken from the arena. Dubuque assistant coach Oliver David said the player was in stable condition, with Fighting Saints head coach Matt Shaw with him at the hospital.

Fighting is allowed in the USHL, a league that includes players mainly aged 16 through 20, carrying the same five-minute major it does in the NHL. The league is the primary feeder for U.S. college hockey and has had numerous players drafted into the NHL.

This is sure to fire up the fighting debate again, but first and foremost Chanter's health is the most important thing. There was a good sign late Saturday night as the defenseman tweeted:

Elite League hockey player banned 47 games for acts of violence on ice

Derek Campbell of the Hull Stingrays was hit with a 47-game ban and subsequently released from his team for reacting violently after being smashed against the boards by a Dundee Stars player.

The 33-year-old Elite League player received the severe punishment after attempting an eye gouge, fighting and other acts of violence during a league game between the teams. 

After being on the receiving end of a high hit by Nico Sacchetti behind the net and being ejected, Campbell was escorted off the ice, but then went berserk and attacked Sacchetti near the away locker rooms.

Campbell won't have to serve out his ban with the Stingrays; before the ban was announced the Stringways fired Campbell, who was in his second turn with the club.

Team Owner Bobby McKeown said: “What he did on the ice in reaction to the challenge is part and parcel of the game, but I can’t condone what happened off it, it’s a business decision”.

Campbell was cited for four different acts of violence and received lengthy bans for each. His rap sheet, according to the league, included:

• Fighting off the Ice (15 games)
• Attempted eye gouge (12 games)
• Knee to the head (10 games)
• Excessive force resulting in an impact to the ice (10 games)

Russian youth league hockey teams brawl for over two minutes (VIDEO)

This has to be one of the most unbelievable hockey brawls ever.  Too bad it involves kids who look to be about ten years old.

This amazing — but somewhat disturbing — video shows the little pellets at a Russian youth hockey tournament dropping their gloves and pummelling each other for a good two minutes before the scuffling ends.

The kids literally fly across the ice to get in on the action.

Look closely and you can probably see the Hansonlovski brothers somewhere.
