Eagles Pro Bowler Jason Peters quit on coach Chip Kelly during loss

For all those Eagles fans who just gave up on their team while Philadelphia got beat down by the Redskins Saturday night, well... they had company with a player who was still on the field.

Jason Peters removed himself from the 38-24 blowout in the fourth quarter, after it became clear that Chip Kelly’s well publicized offensive scheme had failed once again — and the Eagles would not be going to the playoffs. 

“I’m not going to get hurt for this,” Peters told people on the Eagles’ sideline, according to Fox 29 in Philadelphia.

The perennial All-Pro, who just last week was named to his eighth Pro Bowl, said he didn’t want to risk injury for a team that wasn’t going to the playoffs, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

And the only reason the Eagles stood a chance of making the postseason is because of the pathetic NFC East.

The 33-year-old quitting on the team is not nearly the first blow against Kelly, but it may be the most telling. The one-time offensive genius from the University of Oregon, whose high-octane offense was all the rage, has seen nothing but disappointment and condemnation in Philadelphia.

Kelly nearly completely overhauled the team with unpopular moves this offseason, dealing its quarterback (Nick Foles) and star running back (LeSean McCoy), as well as sending several star wide receivers out of town (DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin) the past few years.

Things came to a head when McCoy directed charges of racism towards Kelly.

Kelly might be one of the sorriest things about the NFL right now, at least in Philly, but Peters crybaby move represents something that seems to be wrong in sports and the world.

Namely, self-entitlement.

Marcus Mariota was on hand for the annual Maxwell Football Club awards ceremony in Atlantic City Friday, where he was given the Maxwell Award as college football's player of the year.

And with the NFL draft about six weeks down the road, the Oregon quarterback gave one team about two hours up the Jersey Turnpike some food for thought

"I'd love to play for the Jets," said Mariota, according to the Asbury Park Press.

 "Meeting with the offensive coordinator [Chan Gailey] and the quarterbacks coach [Kevin Patullo] was awesome,'' he said. "It was an opportunity for me to introduce myself, and it seems like a great organization."

The Heisman Trophy winner has been linked to the Jets, the quarterback-confused team that holds the No. 6 pick in the draft.

But there's also been some speculation that another team one hour west on the Atlantic City Turnpike is giving the quarterback some serious consideration.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly — once Mariota's college head coach — is reportedly willing to move up from the 20th spot to select the former Duck.

"I wouldn't doubt it," Mariota said of Kelly potentially pulling off a blockbuster trade to get him. "But coach Kelly and the Eagles are going to do what's best for that team, and we'll see what happens."

Mariota said he had an informal breakfast meeting with the Eagles' quarterbacks coach on Thursday. He also said "everybody" jokes with him about the Eagles moving up to get him.

"I'm not sure what coach Kelly wants to do, and I haven't talked to him about it," Mariota said. "He's been more of a mentor for me when I needed someone, or if I needed to talk to him about anything, he's been there for me."

Marcus Mariota became the first Oregon player to earn the Heisman Trophy and the first Hawaii native to take home the coveted prize. After receiving the 25-pound trophy, Mariota gave an emotional speech, thanking his family, his teammates and home state.

During the tearful speech Saturday night, the soft-spoken quarterback — who beat out Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper and Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon — also thanked his coaches including Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.

"Coach (Mark) Helfrich, coach (Scott) Frost, and coach (Chip) Kelly," Mariota said,"thank you for the opportunity. You took a chance on me, and I am truly grateful."

That shout-out — or whisper-out, if you please — has already started speculation that the Eagles might try to move up to get him in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The link between Kelly and Mariota, who were together for one full season during their days at Oregon, has Eagles fans dreaming of the perfect replacement of Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez in running Kelly's offensive attack. 

And, earlier this week,  Kelly took time out from preparing for Sunday night's showdown with the Cowboys to heap plenty of praise on his former player and stoke the fire.

"He has a gift for playing football," Kelly said of Mariota. "He is everything you could want. He can throw the ball, he can run. He is the most talented kid I coached in college."

Could next year's most prized player in the NFL Draft go from being a Duck to an Eagle? It's a long shot — but one worth thinking about.

DeSean Jackson calls LeSean McCoy the 'only real one' on Eagles: Report

LeSean McCoy seems to be the only Philadelphia Eagles player to publicly come out and admit that the team will miss DeSean Jackson since his release March 28.

“I mean, it’s a surprise for sure,” LeSean McCoy said Saturday of the former Eagles' Pro Bowl receiver. “I think anyone that tells you that they’re happy with it is … I don’t know how honest that would be.”

And now Jackson took to Instagram to pay back the shout-out and thank his former teammate for his support, reports NJ.com.

Jackson posted a picture of the two with the following caption, insinuating McCoy is "the only real one" of his former teammates.

McCoy is one teammate who was really close with Jackson during his time in Philadelphia. The Pro Bowl running back recently wondered why teammates who have been interviewed over the past two weeks have not come out in support of Jackson.  And how that deafening silence may be a sign they were glad to see Jackson go. 

"I think anybody that tells you that they’re happy about it, I don’t know how honest that would be," McCoy said recently to Eagles 24/7. "So when you say he didn’t bond with the team, I don’t know what that means because I was a teammate and we bonded."

The Eagles released the 27-year-old Jackson last month following reports the team had concerns about Jackson's off-the-field issues, including the company he kept and his relationship with head coach Chip Kelly.

The wideout quickly signed with the Washington Redskins.

DeSean Jackson: Keeping Vick is 'no-brainer' for Eagles

DeSean Jackson sounded thrilled at the prospect of playing under new head coach Chip Kelly but what would make him really happy is for Michael Vick to return as the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback.

The Eagles wide receiver even went as far as to call it a "no-brainer" during an interview with the NFL Network on Friday.

"For sure I can see it," Jackson told the network at the Super Bowl in New Orleans. "Now that Chip Kelly is our offensive coordinator, I mean our head coach, Michael Vick I think it's a no-brainer to keep him here.  It fits his playing style and what he's done perfect."

The 33-year-old Vick, who has the second-highest base salary of any NFL quarterback, is coming off his worst season ever and the Eagles don't have to pay his $15.5 million salary if they don't want to. That is unless Kelly convinces the organization that Vick would be a perfect fit for his explosive offensive style.
