Derek Jeter reaches out to A-Rod, gets silence from former teammate

Alex Rodriguez, appearing on Michael Kay's ESPN Radio show before his final game at Fenway Park on Thursday, was asked if he had talked with “Derek” since the 41-year-old A-Rod announced that Friday would be his last day as a Yankees player.

“With who?” Rodriguez said.

“Derek Jeter,” he was told.

“About what?” Rodriguez responded to what came across like a diss towards the Yankee icon.

It seemed more likely that Rodriguez didn't hear the question clearly and acknowledged Jeter had reached out to him, but his “inbox is completely full,” so he didn't get back to his one-time BFF.

The two were close friends when they were rookie shortstops more than 20 years ago, but the relationship soured over the years even after Rodriguez bumped himself to third base in deference to Jeter when he joined the Yankees via a trade from the Rangers in 2004.

Still, A-Rod is managing to get a little love in the unlikeliest of places.

Red Sox fans sarcastically serenaded the soon-to-be-gone Yankee with a chant of "We want A-Rod" before they turned it into a chorus of boos when he finally got up to the plate.

It is not exactly clear what Rodriguez will do after abruptly ending his career when the Yankees release him from his contract following Friday's game against the Rays at Yankee Stadium, but, surprisingly, he wasn't granted a start at third base for his final game.

“CC [Sabathia] is on the mound [Friday],” Rodriguez said after manager Joe Girardi bluntly said no to A-Rod's request to play the hot corner one last time. 

“There’s a lot of history there, and I thought it would be a fun way to go out. The fans of New York remember me more as third baseman. … I can at least make routine plays. That would’ve been fun for me and our fans.”

It would be fun to see A-Rod at third one last time. Just don't expect Jeets.

Rusney Castillo forgets how many outs there are, and throws ball to fan in stands (VIDEO)

Rusney Castillo's heart was in the right place, but the Red Sox right fielder's brain seemed to be somewhere else when he made a grab in right field and tossed the souvenir ball to a fan in the stands Wednesday night.

Too bad it was only the second out and there was an Indians runner on base.

The brain-freeze occured in the seventh inning of Boston's 6-4 win over Cleveland when Jose Ramirez popped up a fly ball to Castillo. The Red Sox fielder reeled in the ball and then flicked it into the Fenway stands to some fans waiting with their gloves outstretched — which would've been a cool gesture if the inning had been over. 

Abraham Almonte tagged up at first and casually strolled over to third on what was officially ruled as a throwing error on Castillo.

But since Castillo willingly threw the ball away, was it really an error?

Jason Kipnis struck out in the next at-bat — so no damage was done.

But at least the ball has a nice little story behind it now.

Wearing a Yankees baseball cap to Fenway Park (even if it's a game between the Indians and Red Sox) is reason enough for razzing from the home crowd. 

But when you snag a foul ball and show it off to the thousends of Sox faithful sitting right next to you, there's a chance you might be in for a long night of verbal abuse.

So after this Yankees fan got over the excitement of catching this ball, he did the smart thing and quickly removed the hat as a show of remorse.

That red USA shirt probably helped him blend in a little better too.

There wasn't any chance Derek Jeter was going to play at Fenway Park Friday night— after he asked for a day off for the first time in his 20 year career — but Red Sox fans still honored the Yankees' captain by chanting his name during the game.

The retiring Jeter said he was so emotionally spent from Thursday's heartwarming and exciting Yankee Stadium farewell the night before that he couldn't muster enough energy to play.

Still, that didn't stop Red Sox fans from showing their rival of two decades a little love in the middle of Jose Pirela's at-bat in the third inning while Jeter took it in while riding the pine:

Fiery Red Sox fans call Jacoby Ellsbury a 'trader' on Twitter

Red Sox fans are fired up upon hearing the shocking news that Jacoby Ellsbury is becoming a New York Yankee — and have put their money where their tweets are.

While some angry Red Sox fans spent Tuesday on Twitter calling Jacoby Ellsbury a "trader" — and not a "traitor" — for agreeing to a seven-year, $153-million, others were threatening to turn into pyromaniacs.

Dozens upon dozens of people said they wanted to burn their Ellsbury jerseys — many saying that he broke their hearts for deciding to don pinstripes, especially after winning a 2013 World Series with them.

Ellsbury's first trip back to Fenway Park next season should be a hot ticket.

Boston hooligans celebrate Red Sox championship with violent brawl (VIDEO)

A gang of Boston thugs celebrated the Red Sox World Series victory by sucker punching and ganging up on each other during wild brawl that turned a joyous parade sideline into shameful crime scene.

A violent and graphic video first posted by Barstool Sports shows a fistfight after Saturday’s Red Sox parade turn into an all-out melee with the bodies of unconscious  men sprawled across the pavement.

“There was at least one large brawl, and it may have broken off into two or more smaller brawls,” Suffolk County District Attorney spokesman Jake Wark told the N.Y. Daily News.

The violent and graphic video begins with two men fighting in front of a cheering crowd and quickly devolves into an unending round of cheap shots.

Combatants triple and quadruple team single fighters. They pummel and kick people who are down. A goon in a red T-shirt drags a flattened brawler toward the edge of the road, raises his foot up high and brutally slams it down on the man’s head.

“He just got curb stomped, dude,” says one of the video’s giggling narrators.

The camera shows at least four men laid out on the sidewalk. At least two appear to be out cold.

“This kid’s dead,” says one of the men behind the camera. “This kid’s dead.”

He wasn’t, according to a police report, but two people were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Wark identified the cheapshot artist as Liame Browne, a 23-year-old from West Roxbury. He and Kieran Boyle, 21, of Dedham face assault and battery charges.

Officers arrested Browne and Boyle at the scene, and they’re working to identify other brawlers. Wark said they’re reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and speaking with witnesses.

Browne and Boyle were arraigned on Monday. Boyle’s father told CBS Boston witnesses had misidentified his son.

“Three people pointed out Kieran as the one kicking this kid in the head, and he didn’t kick anybody,” Kevin Boyle said. “He wasn’t even in the fight.”

Boyle’s friend, Michael Zarther, told the station he was the one who started the fight outside Coogan’s bar.

“He was talking smack about one of my friends, and kind of just got me angry, so I went and hit him,” Zarther said. “It started a huge, big misunderstanding.”
