MLB looks to end on-field champagne celebrations: Report

Major League Baseball, seemingly taking a lead from that No Fun League, had a message to teams that carry their postseason champagne celebrations onto the field to spray fans: Don't pop that cork outside.

MLB, concerned that such celebratory interaction in the stands is getting out of control and poses potential danger for fans, especially young ones, claimed there could even be disciplinary action involved.

After the Mets clinched the NLCS in Game 4 on Wednesday night, officials stopped several players at the door of the visitors' clubhouse at Wrigley Field and asked them not to go onto the field carrying champagne bottles.

Some players were annoyed, but soon after, manager Terry Collins was on the field spraying a few dozen jubilant Mets fans — who seemed to love every spritz from the bottle.

It was not clear whether Collins had any idea that MLB had been trying to curtail such behavior.

But Collins' celebration was shared widely on social media and further cemented his popularity among the Mets faithful.

A small group of Mets fans got to be part of an amazing celebration after their team beat the Cubs, 8-3, to clinch a World Series berth in Chicago Wednesday night.

To show his appreciation for their away game support, Mets manager Terry Collins made the loyal fans part of the team's celebration when he playfully sprayed them with champagne as they chanted, "Let's go Mets" behind their Wrigley Field dugout after the game.

It's been 15 years since a Mets team won a pennant, so the fans also chanted the manager's name, "Terry Collins," in gratitude as well.

Matt Harvey ‘sore and swelled up,’ putting Game 5 in question: Report

Matt Harvey is still scheduled to pitch a potential Game 5 of the NLCS for the Mets, but there is still some concern about the right-hander’s availability.

Manager Terry Collins on Monday described Harvey as “sore and swelled up,” two days after the pitcher was hit by a line drive near his right shoulder in Game 1 of the NLCS, reported the New York Post.

“The big day will be (Tuesday),” Collins said, referring to Harvey’s scheduled throw day.

In the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game, Dexter Fowler hit a line drive that careened off Harvey between the elbow and the shoulder, bouncing high in the air before the pitcher completed the out.

If Harvey isn’t deemed fit to pitch a potential Game 5, the start could go to Bartolo Colon, according to Collins.

TBS host Casey Stern drops f-bomb on broadcast after Mets beat Cubs (VIDEO)

The MLB postseason is a good reason to get fired up, but TBS host Casey Stern may want to water down the coffee in those giant network cups while working the broadcasts.

As TBS cut to a commercial on its postgame show, the mic picked up Stern shouting, “boom, motherf***ing...” during a cutaway.

Stern apologized for the naughty language when they returned from the commercial.

Mets turn locker room floor into beer slip-n-slide after win over Dodgers (VIDEO)

Whoever said Major League Baseball was a kids game played by men might want to change that to a kids game played by kids at heart after checking out the Mets locker room after their Game 5 win over the Dodgers Thursday night.

During a wild celebration inside Dodger Stadium, Mets pitcher Jon Niese turned the floor of the locker room floor into his own personal slip-n-slide — using a shower of beer for his carefree glide.

Playtime will have to end soon as the Mets travel back to New York to meet the Cubs in the NLCS at Citi Field Saturday.

Giants fan who returned Travis Ishikawa's walk-off home run ball gets World Series tickets (PHOTO)

Imagine being a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan and holding a piece of team history in your hands — and giving it up. Willingly.

That's what Frank Burke did — after catching Travis Ishikawa's dramatic Game 5 NLCS Series walk-off home run ball (video at bottom) that gave the Giants the pennant and sent them to the World Series last Thursday — when he returned the prized souvenir to the San Francisco hero.

Burke, an auto repair shop owner from nearby Oakdale, said he knew how important the ball was to Ishikawa and wanted him to have it back.

"I believe in karma," he said. "I didn't hit that ball ....if anybody's going to have that ball in their game room or trophy case, it's going to be the guy who hit it."

Burke said he hadn't planned on keeping the ball. He keeps home run balls from his high school days in his own trophy case.

"They're still important to me, they're part of my memories," he said. "So why would I think that he (Ishikawa) wouldn't want the same thing?"

So after having the ball authenticated by a Giants official, and being told that Ishikawa wanted it back, Burke went down from his right field seat to the clubhouse and handed it over.

Ishikawa shook hands, thanked him, and gave him a signed bat in return.

Burke said Giants officials asked him what he would like and he suggested World Series tickets but was told that was unlikely.

After doing a media interview the next morning, however, he got a call from the Giants. Burke now has four tickets to Game 3 of the World Series against the Royals at AT&T Park on Friday night.

Burke plans on taking his friend, Greg Leutza, who is battling cancer and said the ball and the bat weren't the things he treasured most.

"Just the memory for me and my buddy, that's priceless," he said. "That meant more to me than anything else will."

Sounds like a true friend — and fan.

Teammates rip jersey from Kolten Wong's back after Game 2 walk-off (PHOTO)

The Cardinals won Game 2 of the NLCS on Kolten Wong's walk-off home run Sunday night against the Giants, and, during the celebration, Wong' teammates literally ripped the jersey off his back.

Yasiel Puig celebrates home run, triple in same at-bat (VIDEO)

Yasiel Puig snaps an 0-for-11 skid by flipping his bat after what he believes is a home run in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Cardinals. In actuality, he has hit a triple. After, say, 30 feet into his bat-flip-punctuated stroll, he realizes his miscalculation and goes from a casual home run trot into overdrive. He ends up with a stand-up triple and two celebrations in one at-bat.

Worst version of 'God Bless America' by woman with giant hat on her head

San Francisco is known for a lot of crazy things.  Banning Happy Meals, trying to limit the sale of goldfish but still allowing Brian Wilson to roam free seem to be the norm.  So having a woman wearing a giant hat with a model of the city on it sing "God Bless America" at Game 6 of the NLCS seemed fitting for the free-spirited fans.

That was until an visibly embarrassed Misa Malone, from the San Francisco musical revue, the "Beach Blanket Babylon." flubbed her way through the words of the song in front of the Candlestick Park crowd.

It takes a lot of guts to get out in front of 60,000 fans on a nationally-televised game but, come on, next time don't forget the words.



Performers from the campy Beach Blanket Babylon — the longest running musical revue in theater history — routinely perform at Giants games so it was no surprise to see the singer in her outrageous attire.

We've all heard of people wearing a city on their sleeve, but wearing it on your head is tough — especially when it weighs more than Tim Lincecum.

Joe Buck to pull double duty and call both football and baseball Giants on Sunday

To say the least, Joe Buck has a Giant task ahead of him on Sunday.

As FOX's lead football and baseball announcer, Buck will be in the Bay Area to call both the New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers NFL regular season game and the San Francisco Giants-St. Louis Cardinals NLCS Game 1 matchup.  One right after the other.

The NFL game kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET, while the first pitch for the MLB game is set for 8 p.m. ET.

The durable broadcaster plans to acheive the impressive broadcasting feat by gettting crosstown from Candlestick to AT&T Park by — how else— cable car.

Buck-haters — who won't find a double dose of the announcer to be a San Francisco treat — will just have to endure seven or eight hours of avoiding kicking in their TV screens.

Who knows?  Maybe Artie Lange will show up and liven things up.
