NHL won't hold hearing for Seidenberg hit on Jonathan Toews: Report (VIDEO)

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety decided on Friday that Dennis Seidenberg’s hit that rattled Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday night isn’t worthy of supplemental discipline, and there won’t be a hearing for the Boston Bruins defenseman.

As nasty as the behind-the-back check looks, both players were chasing the puck and Seidenberg legitimately uses his shoulder before being called for the boarding minor.

Although Toews was visibly shaken — he stayed on the ice — after going head-first into the boards. It looks like the NHL got it right by not calling for further punishment.

The real infraction — letting a woozy Toews play on.

Canucks' Tom Sestito whiffs big time on body check (VIDEO)

Canucks forward Tom Sestito was making his season debut on Saturday night against the Edmonton Oilers and he was looking to make a big impact.

Too bad only the boards felt it.

Early in the first period he had his sights set on Matt Hendricks — who was handling the puck below the goal line. Sestito committed himself to the hit but all he got was air.

Ouch!

Rangers' John Moore suspended 5 games for vicious hit (VIDEO)

The NHL suspended New York Rangers defenseman John Moore five games without pay for his nasty and illegal check Monday on Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula.

Moore was assessed a match penalty for his cheap shot during the game, when he used his elbow to drill Haula in the head.

It is Moore's second illegal hit to an opponent's head in the span of 12 games, which makes this five-game ban seem a little lax — even if he is considered a repeat offender. Moore earned a two-game suspension during last season's playoffs for an illegal shot to the head. 

This time he will forfeit $51,859.75 in salary, which will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Jackets' Cam Anderson OK after taking skate to face (VIDEO)

There was a scary moment Friday night after Columbus Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson was bloodied by the skate of Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Kesler with an inadvertent back-kick.

This is how close Kesler's skate came to taking out one of Atkinson's eyes:

Luckily for Atkinson, his cheek caught the brunt of the sharp blade and missed his peeper.

Murray to face hearing after brutal hit on Kostka: Report

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Douglas Murray received a match penalty for the hit on his Tampa Bay Lightning counterpart Michael Kostka Tuesday night, and now he will face a hearing with the league office this week.

According to reports, the hearing will take place by phone Thursday morning at 11 EST and his punishment will be at maximum a five-game suspension. Per league rules, a player is suspended indefinitely after receiving a match penalty pending a hearing. Montreal next plays Friday against Ottawa.

On the video, it appears that Murray (not know as a cheap-shot artist) catches Kostka with an elbow to the chin before the Lightning player goes down and hits his head on the ice. A stretcher was brought out, but Kostka was able to exit the ice under his own power.

Joffrey Lupul takes out teammate Nazem Kadri with high and hard elbow (GIF)

In what looked like a scene from WWE (yes it's rehearsed), Joffrey Lupul saw a chance to deliver a hard check on Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin next to his goal but, instead of laying into Sedin, he took out his own Maple Leafs teammate Nazem Kadri with a ferocious elbow.

And Kadri went down like Randy Orton hit with a chair .

Lupul had his sights squarely on his opponent until Sedin did a nice head fake and avoided the high hit. Kadri just happened be the next in the line of fire.

If it weren't on his own teammate, Lupul might be hearing from the NHL's Department of Player Safety after that blow. 

Cody Franson takes nasty hit into stanchion from Mike Fisher: (VIDEO)

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson suffered a cut to his nose, but seems to have avoided a more serious injury after being shoved into a stanchion Thursday night, according to USA Today. That’s great news after he was the victim of the scary hit by Mike Fisher during Toronto’s match against the Nashville Predators.

Fisher pushed Franson from behind into stanchion, causing Franson to collapse to the ice. When he got up on his own strength, he left behind a pool of blood:

Fisher was given five minutes for boarding and a game misconduct for his actions, which “surprised” him, according to the Tennessean’s Joshua Cooper. As far as Fisher is concerned, it was a hockey play. He added that he didn’t intend to cause an injury.

Regardless, it brought back vivid memories of when Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara delivered a similar hit to Max Pacioretty in March 2011. That scary hit left Pacioretty with a broken vertebrae.

Brad Stuart gets 3-game suspension for high hit on Rick Nash (VIDEO)

A day after bumbling through a 9-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks, the New York Rangers used Wednesday to regroup before playing their fourth game on a long, season-opening road trip against the Ducks, probably without star Rick Nash, who likely suffered a concussion on a high hit from defenseman Brad Stuart.

After a disciplinary phone hearing Wednesday with Brendan Shanahan, senior vice president of the NHL's Department of Public Safety, Stuart was suspended three games.

Nash, who played seven more shifts after Stuart's hard hit at 2:32 of the first period, said afterward that he had a "headache," but didn't feel it at first. "It got worse as it went on. It just didn't feel right. I haven't seen a replay, but he caught me right across the head, so, I guess it's a head shot. I felt it right across here," pointing to the right side of his face and jaw.

"Anytime you get a headshot you're concerned, to feel the way it feels. It's not a good feeling."

Nash previously suffered a concussion in February 2012 on a hit from behind by Boston's Milan Lucic and was on injured reserve for four games.

NHL quiet about Nash's cheap hit on Kopecky

It's entirely possible Rick Nash could hear from Brendan Shanahan and the NHL's Department of Player Safety about the vicious back of the head shot the New York Ranger leveled against Tomas Kopecky Thursday night. But the NHL has been pretty quiet about the cheap shot and that silence speaks volumes.

"There will be no hearing on Nash..." tweeted Larry Brooks of The New York Post Friday afternoon, "Boggles the mind."

Late in the third period of the Rangers 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers, Nash came flying in as Tomas Kopecky took a shot from between the circles that was saved by Henrik Lundqvist.

As replays showed, Nash left his feet and apparently elbowed him in the back of Kopecky's head. The Panthers forward, who wasn't facing Nash, was down on the ice without his helmet for a few seconds and skated off. Nash wasn't called for a penalty.

The Rangers don't play again until Sunday, so the NHL might still be reviewing it.

Nash wasn't penalized in the game and isn't a known goon while Kopecky finished the game on the bench, but the hit does deserve some sort of punishment.
