Yankees will wear cap and uniform patches honoring Derek Jeter last three weeks of season: Report

It’s usually an honor reserved for players who have recently had their number retired, or been elected to the Hall of Fame, or died. But the Yankees are adding a little flair to celebrate  Derek Jeter's last games in pinstripes.

The team announced on Tuesday that players will wear a patch depicting Derek Jeter's final season logo on the left sleeve of their uniform and cap. The patch will be unveiled Sunday and worn by the entire team through the end of the 2014 season.

The Yankees will debut the logos on Derek Jeter Day, prior to Sunday's afternoon game against the Royals. Former teammates, family members and other guests are expected to take part in a special pregame ceremony highlighting Jeter's career. 

The Yankees also announced that Yankee Stadium team stores are currently selling a limited-edition New Era Derek Jeter collectible cap set, including three hats that celebrate Jeter's five World Series championships, his 3,000 hits milestone and his upcoming retirement.

 Only 2,014 units were created. So hop to it.

Derek Jeter seems to be keeping a relatively low profile during his last season as a Yankee. And — while his farewell tour seems downright somber compared to Mariano Rivera's gag-gift jamboree last season — just a day before his 40th birthday, the Yankees captain showed his lighter side and smashed it out of the park.

Jeter, who would never stare down or bail on an inept interviewer, does exactly that on Mark Teixeira's latest "Foul Territory" video.

Teixeira, playing his recurring role of the nervous host, repeatedly fumbles over his words and facts while trying to interview a bored-looking Jeter at the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla.

And Jeter does what he's probably wanted to do many times throughout his 19-year career while talking with the media — he abruptly gets up and walks away.

While Teixeira is no Chris Farley, his short satires put a lot of SNL skits to shame.

The Derek Jeter Farewell tour carried on Tuesday inside Safeco Field — in a city the Yankees captain might hold nearer to his heart than any other place outside of New York.

Jeter's debut, May 29, 1995, didn't take place at Safeco Field but inside Seattle's cavernous Kingdome. It was the night which launched his Hall of Fame career.

The Mariners honored the Yankees' shortstop (VIDEO) with a tribute since this is the last regular-season series he'll play in The Emerald City.

They gave him a base from the old Kingdome, where Jeter collected his first career hit; a Safeco Park base; and a $5,000 check to his Turn 2 foundation.

Then his former teammate, Robinson Cano, who helped present Jeter the gifts with the help of Felix Hernandez, got a little personal.

Cano gave Jeter a watch with a message engraved on it:

"To Derek: Thank you for showing me how to be a leader. With love and respect, RC."

As for his greatest memory of his MLB debut, Jeter had no trouble recalling the 8-7 loss.

"I was 0-for-5," Jeter said with a smile.

Despite the 0-for, how did he celebrate the big night?

"My dad was in town and afterward we tried to get something to eat and everything was closed so we ended up walking to a McDonald's," Jeter said.. "So he's here again today, both my parents are, so we'll go to McDonald's after the game."

Jeter's first career hit came a night later, a fifth-inning single to left off Seattle starter Tim Belcher, in a 7-3 loss, a night he finished 2-for-3.

These Royals fans may have given Derek Jeter the best farewell gift yet — or at least the weirdest.

The two passionate fans sported these matching pussycat outfits during Sunday's Royals-Yankees game and besides meowing for KC, gave the Yankee captain a little purr.

Although Jeter has already received some interesting farewell gifts from teams around the league, this has to be the cuddliest. 

And, it's the thought that counts — no matter how strange.

Derek Jeter gets curtain call and he didn't even play (PHOTO)

In what happened to be a first, even for Derek Jeter, the Yankees captain got a curtain call from the crowd — although though he didn't play.

Jeter was stretching his idle muscles in the clubhouse at the end of the sixth inning when he noticed the in-house feed of the Busch Stadium scoreboard, which was showing a highlight reel of his career, complete with interviews from Cardinals players.

The video was almost over by the time Jeter reached the dugout, but the camera focused on him, bringing the sellout crowd to its feet for a standing ovation. Jeter waved from inside the dugout, but the crowd didn’t stop prompting Jeets to come out and tip his hat and also point at the Cardinals players standing by the rail in the first base dugout.

“The fans all three games — well, the two that I played — every time I came up, they were pretty much standing,” Jeter said. “We were winning, so I thought it was appropriate.”

Derek Jeter paused for a moment after he was asked whether he'd ever taken a curtain call during a game he didn't play.

"No," he finally said. "No, I don't think so. I've been serenaded with some things when I wasn't playing a game. But, no, not a good thing."

After the seventh inning applause rose to a crescendo, a bashful-looking Jeter climbed the dugout steps, waved to the crowd and then to the Cardinals' dugout, where several players were also standing and clapping for him.

"I had no idea what happened," Jeter said. "But, like I said, the fans have been great here in St. Louis and I'm glad I've had the opportunity to come back."

Before Derek Jeter's final Subway Series game Thursday night at Citi Field, the Mets gave him a subway tile mosaic with his iconic number 2 on it. They also gave The Captain a $22,222.22 check for his Turn 2 Foundation.

Next year's Subway Series will be the first without Jeter on the Yankees roster.

Jeter caught off guard by Astros' timing of dugout salute (VIDEO)

In the first inning of the New York Yankees game against the Houston Astros Wednesday night, the home team showed their appreciation for retiring  Derek Jeter with a rare but sincere gesture — exiting the dugout for a standing ovation.

It happened during Jeter's at-bat with one out in the first inning, when he walked to the plate and was receiving a nice welcome from the Astros' crowd at Minute Maid Park.

However, more bizarre than the impromptu salute from the Astros was the odd timing of the players' gesture — it came during the the second game of a three game series and after a pre-game ceremony already honored the future Hall-of-Famer.

Adding to the build-up, Houston's bullpen also came from behind the door in the outfield to pay tribute while Jeter was preparing for his first pitch of the evening.

Even the normally cool Jeter seemed to be caught off guard by the awkward moment.

So the baffled — and a little red-faced — Yankee captain simply pulled the helmet off his head and waved it at the crowd like he didn't know what else to do. 

It might have seemed like a strange and random time for the Astros to give the ovation since they had a chance to do it on Tuesday night, but it showed great respect to one of the best and most popular players of his generation.

"I had never even thought about that happening," the normally self-assured Jeter said after the Yankees' 3-1 loss to the Astros Wednesday. "I didn't know what was happening at first. I didn't plan anything like that."

Jeter said he was grateful for everything.

"It was nice," Jeter said. "It was nice that they took the time to honor me."

He better start planning for a lot of these occasions.

The farewell tour of New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter got off to a rainy beginning today as the retiring player was honored prior to the start of his final spring training game at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Sadly, it was to be the last time Jeter would suit up for an exhibition game after 19 seasons of spring ball in the Tampa area.

And too bad the game against the Marlins was called to due to rain.

Otherwise, the Yankees captain received a key to the city of Tampa as fireworks went off in the distance and a big ovation from the stands as they said goodbye to the future Hall of Famer who is going to have a number of farewell moments in cities across the country this year.

Last year it was Mariano Rivera who received gifts and tributes from rival teams across Major League Baseball when he announced he was retiring. This year it’ll be Jeter who baseball lavishes with the same.

Jeter was out of action with injuries for much of last season, so, deep down, fans are hoping the five-time World Series champion doesn’t make a return appearance here in Tampa during his last season.

And, rainout or not, you knew Jeter wasn’t going to miss saying goodbye to the place where his spectacular career started.
