Minor league game postponed due to circus tent (PHOTO)

A game between the High Class-A Tampa Yankees and Clearwater Threshers (Phillies) was postponed Friday night, but not because of rain or wet grounds — it was because the circus was in town.

After some consideration by officials at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the game was postponed because of a circus tent. The circus parked across the street had a colorful tent with bright lights, and unfortunately it was right in the sight-line of the batters.

Hitters need to be able to see the pitch coming at them, not only so they can hit it, but so they can get out of the way if it's going to hit them — and some of those young hurlers do have a tendency to get a little wild.

The irony? It was always a circus when The Boss was in the house. 

Jeter honored in ceremony before final spring training game (Video)

The farewell tour of New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter got off to a rainy beginning today as the retiring player was honored prior to the start of his final spring training game at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Sadly, it was to be the last time Jeter would suit up for an exhibition game after 19 seasons of spring ball in the Tampa area.

And too bad the game against the Marlins was called to due to rain.

Otherwise, the Yankees captain received a key to the city of Tampa as fireworks went off in the distance and a big ovation from the stands as they said goodbye to the future Hall of Famer who is going to have a number of farewell moments in cities across the country this year.

Last year it was Mariano Rivera who received gifts and tributes from rival teams across Major League Baseball when he announced he was retiring. This year it’ll be Jeter who baseball lavishes with the same.

Jeter was out of action with injuries for much of last season, so, deep down, fans are hoping the five-time World Series champion doesn’t make a return appearance here in Tampa during his last season.

And, rainout or not, you knew Jeter wasn’t going to miss saying goodbye to the place where his spectacular career started.

Mark Teixeira uses honey to lure bees during Yankees-Red Sox swarm delay (VIDEO)

A swarm of bees stopped play between the Yankees and Red Sox for seven minutes Tuesday afternoon. The delay occurred when a the bees were spotted buzzing around the left-field corner of George M. Steinbrenner Field.

After the grounds crew's bug spray assault to get rid of the pests failed, Mark Teixeira figured he had the solution. For some reason the Yankees first baseman grabbed two bottles of honey from the dugout, hoping to get the attention of the crew.

The bear-shaped bottles didn't help.

Broadcaster John Sterling asked whether the bees would "get drunk and fall over" if you threw beer on them, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi was rattling off lines from the movie "Tommy Boy."

The crowd cheered when Mike Carp courageously returned to left.
