Giants' Steve Weatherford 'blessed' after car crash on Jersey Turnpike

Steve Weatherford had a heaven and hell of a ride over the past 24 hours.

On Sunday, the New York Giants punter and his wife, Laura, welcomed their fourth child, Josie Jaclyn Weatherford. Then, after a brief visit with his daughter, Weatherford had to jet from San Diego to Newark Sunday night so he could report for the team's OTAs Monday morning.

And the only thing harder than leaving his family was the trip back to New Jersey.

The rainstorms that soaked New York and New Jersey Sunday night cancelled Weatherford’s flight, so he hopped a different plan to Washington, D.C., at 11 p.m. From there, the Giants punter rented a car and began driving up I-95 to his Hoboken home.

But those storms also wreaked havoc on the highways, as Weatherford explained.

“(Three) hours into my trip at 3:30am I run into a massive body of water on the NJ turnpike, I hydroplane, slam into the median, get blasted in the face by the air bags,” Weatherford wrote on Instagram. “My rental is totaled, and I walked out without a scratch. I am feeling so incredibly blessed. Not only has God given my family and I a beautiful, healthy 10 pound baby girl. He sent his guardian angels to keep my car from flipping and possibly dying.”

Weatherford added that he called 911 and “the finest Highway Patrol in America, the NJ State Police” came to his rescue and gave him a ride back to Hoboken. Weatherford claims he didn’t get any preferential treatment from the troopers because he’s a Giant — “they didn't even know who I was or what I do.” — and shouted out Officers Adam Brozek and Kim Smith for “ going that extra step” and driving him home.

Later Weatherford counted his blessings after the sequence of events.

Car lands in sleeping man's bed, but he's mad about damage to NASCAR memorabilia collection (PHOTO)

A huge NASCAR fan is lucky to be alive after an alleged drunk driver drove through his bedroom wall and the car landed on the bed he was sleeping in Thursday morning.

Terry Brouillette must have thought he was dreaming of a NASCAR wreck when the car came crashing into his Worcester, Mass. ground-level apartment about 2:30 am, literally stopping on top of Brouillette’s bed.

Brouillette suffered a cut to his forehead, but was otherwise uninjured.

But what really got the 71-year-old Brouillette's oil pan boiling was the fact that the out-of-control driver took out a huge section of his prized NASCAR memorabilia collection.

Brouillette estimated the damage to be in the “thousands of dollars,” with much of the items displayed across the room destroyed or damaged. The worst of it was seeing the pileup of his cherished die-cast cars featuring his favorite NASCAR driver, Tony Stewart.

"I could touch the bumper, I could almost do an oil change if I wanted, that’s how far she went," Brouillette told Boston TV station WHDH. "I figured somebody’s got to be up there watching for me, I don’t know why. It was more of a scare than anything."

Brouliette might want to start wearing an official Tony Stewart helmet to bed.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a car wreck near downtown today.

Details are few at the moment, but the crash included Newton’s car flipped over on a bridge and another involved, near the intersection of Church Street and I-277, close to Bank of America Stadium.

Dianne Gallagher of WCNC has a photograph of Newton being loaded into an ambulance, and Chris Littman of the Sporting News has a photo of Newton’s truck after it was flipped over, the top flattened.

Early reports said the quarterback was "conscious and smiling" as he was stretchered away.

South African soccer star somehow walked away from this horrific car wreck (PHOTOS)

A South Africa soccer star somehow survived a terrifying automobile crash in which his car was impaled on a guardrail that penetrated the entire vehicle from the windshield through the trunk.

Rooi Mahamutsa miraculously walked away from the horrible looking crash with barely a scratch.

The crash took place near Marlboro, Johannesburg, earlier this month but the astonishing pictures have only just emerged. These dramatic photos show the wreckage of Mahamutsa's BMW 3-Series impaled on a guardrail after the smash.

Mahamutsa, who plays for the Orlando Pirates of the South African Premier League, was out driving when his car skidded on a wet patch on the road, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and crash.

Incredibly, the 32-year-old defender walked away with just minor injuries from the incident. He was taken to a local hospital but soon discharged.

Mahamutsa is one lucky dude.

Ichiro Suzuki walks away from Tampa car crash

Ichiro Suzuki walked away from a three-car crash late Saturday afternoon after a woman cut off the New York Yankees outfielder on a Tampa highway.

His Land Rover wasn't so fortunate.

"He is fine," said Yankees general manger Brian Cashman.  "His interpreter called to let us know."

Ichiro was headed south on a Tampa highway about 4 p.m. when he slammed into a woman making a left hand turn in front of him, said Tampa police.  He had just finished playing a game against the Detroit Tigers and was about three miles from George M. Steinbrenner Field.

"He struck her," Tampa Lt. Ronald McMullen told The New York Post. "She ended up hitting a third car, but there were no injuries."

The female driver was cited for the accident.

"The officer didn't even know he played baseball," McMullen joked. "He said, 'I know the Rays but the Yankees?'"

It is unclear if the 39-year-old Ichiro, who was picked up last July from the Seattle Mariners, will miss any spring training games because of the fender bender.  The rightfielder was not scheduled to play the Red Sox in Ft. Myers on Sunday and the Yankees didn't say if he would make the two hour trip south.

The Bronx Bombers have already lost centerfielder Curtis Granderson for ten weeks due to a broken forearm and couldn't afford to lose another veteran outfielder.

You could say the crash gives new meaning to hitting the cut-off man — or in this case — woman.
