Man gets hit in groin by football is always good for a laugh. But man gets hit in groin by hockey puck? Eh... not so much!

Alex Ovechkin found out his whole commitment to defense is maybe a little harder than he thought after the Capitals shooter took a full on blast from Bruins defenseman Torey Krug right to his nether regions.

And I don't mean Siberia.



And although Ovi didn't see the missle-shot coming, the Russian did make the play.

NHL veteran Dustin Penner gets fired from TV gig over Twitter rape joke

Outspoken NHL star Dustin Penner has been dropped from a scheduled analyst spot on TSN after making an offensive rape joke and then following it up with a series of equally tasteless remarks. 

The former Washington Capitals winger and current free agent had been scheduled to appear on TSN's TradeCentre on Monday discussing the hockey league's trade deadline, but that was before his bone-headed tweet:

"Is it always consensual if she's your girlfriend? Asking for my gf...& shortly arriving police," tweeted Penner on Saturday night.

Rather than apologize Penner attempted to justify his remark by tweeting that his girlfriend was in on it too:

If the 32-year-old thought others might share his sense of humor he was sorely mistaken as he received a series of replies from other Twitter uses who reminded Penner that rape is never funny.

An undeterred Penner continued making light of the situation with another attempt at being funny.

But after giving it some thought on Saturday night, Penner issued an apology on Sunday.

Penner also tweeted that the decision for him not to appear on TSN was a "mutual decision."

It still doesn't sound like Penner has a grasp of this whole "mutual" thing just yet.

Capitals' Braden Holtby loses puck in his pads (VIDEO)

Braden Holtby did a little magic trick during the Capitals’ 4-3 win Sunday over the Panthers by making the puck disappear.

Only problem was that the Washington goalie lost it in his pads.

Early in the third period, Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad launched a shot from above the left circle and Holtby caught it inside his layers of padding.

After a short delay — and an awkward pat-down by his teammates — Holtby finally laid a little black egg on the ice.

Two women injured when protective netting falls at TD Garden (PHOTOS)

Two women were injured when the protective netting behind one of the goals fell at the TD Garden Thursday night.

The pole that holds the netting struck the women after the Bruins-Capitals game at about 9:40 p.m., according to CBSBoston.

One woman was taken out of the arena on a stretcher, the other had a neck brace. Their names have not been released.

Boston Police say both bloodied women are in their 20′s and they were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries.

It is unclear what caused the netting to fall.

A photographer covering the game for Getty Images was also nearby and, luckily, only his camera got smashed.

The netting, which is suspended above the glass at the ends of the rink, was made mandatory by the NHL in 2002 after a fan died when she was hit by a puck in Columbus, Ohio.

'Wheel of Fortune' host doesn't approve of Caps-Flyers brawl (VIDEO)

It was already one-sided on the scoreboard, so one goalie found a way to even it up when the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals engaged in a full line brawl that included both goaltenders dropping the gloves.

The whole thing started when Wayne Simmonds turned into a human wrecking ball the next shift after Washington scored to make it 7-0. He and Tom Wilson dropped the gloves. Then a few other players squared off, then Flyers goaltender Ray Emery made a beeline for Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, who appeared to have no interest in dropping the gloves.

It didn't matter. Emery wouldn't take no for an answer. The two goalies squared off and it turned in to a down-and-dirty street brawl. If you didn't know, Emery's not new to this. He had been in two previous fights and is known as an exceptional scrapper among goalies.

Even if Flyers fans ended up getting something for their money, "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak sounded disturbed by the melee and tweeted: "Love hockey, but Flyers are part of reason it remains a niche sport. Shameful tonight (including Philly radio team.)"

Caps’ Oleksy fights to get off ice with broken skate (VIDEO)

Pity the poor NHL players who have to wear so much equipment during a game — especially those danged ice skates.

Now watch as Washington Capitals defenseman Steve Oleksy loses the blade of one skate on Monday and has to helplessly —and comically — slip, stumble and crawl to the bench without any help from the referees or his teammates while the puck was still in play.

Oops. Check that. A ref did actually give Oleksy a helping hand.

Capitals' Tom Wilson loses skate blade after big hit, stumbles to bench

Skating on ice is tough enough, but doing it when you are missing a blade on one foot during an NHL playoff game — as we found out yesterday — is next to impossible.

That's what happened to Washington Capitals rookie Tom Wilson when he was crashed into the boards and "lost his steel" during Game 6 against the New York Rangers Sunday.

The 19-year-old rookie, playing just the second game of his NHL career, came flying in for a check along the end boards. So far, so good. But on the check his skate hit the boards, and his blade went flying off. The hit was high and hard but the trip back to the bench to replace the damaged skate turned into a hilarious lowbrow journey for the hobbled Cap.

Wilson looked like a drunk Quasimodo as he flailed and stumbled back to the bench before teammate Jason Chimera helped out.

It's funny because Wilson wasn't hurt on the play.

Rangers shock Capitals in OT after tying it with 6.6 left

The New York Rangers  already have one dramatic victory over the Washington Capitals and last night the Blue Shirts continued to keep Rangers fans clutching their chests.

Brad Richards— the Rangers alternate captain— scored an amazing game-tying goal with 6.6 seconds in regulation to send the game into overtime.  Marc Staal— the Rangers defenseman— scored the game winner 1:35 into OT sending the crowd at Madison Square Garden into a song-singing frenzy.

The 3-2 victory gave New York a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals— leaving them one game away from making the conference finals for the first time since 1997.

The key moment came when the Rangers trailed 2-1 in regulation and the Capitals' Joel Ward took a high-sticking penalty, drawing blood from the Rangers Carl Hagelin.  During the four-minute power play, Richards tied it with 6.6 seconds left.  Then— with 1:57 seconds of the power play carrying over into OT— Staal scored the game winner winner.
