Benches clear during Astros-Yankees blowout after Carlos Gomez bat flip (VIDEO)

There wasn’t much for Yankees fans to get excited about during the Astros’ 15-1 beatdown of the Bombers Tuesday night, but Carlos Gomez and the Yankees’ bench did their best to provide a little drama in the top of the sixth when the benches cleared.

After Gomez flied out to center for the second out of the inning, he slammed his bat down, seemingly angry with himself.

As he jogged to first, a voice from the Yankees dugout caught Gomez’s attention and the center fielder jawed back “Shut up” three times.

“I threw my bat in frustration,” Gomez said. “If you scream at me, I’m gonna scream at you back.”
Gomez coyly said he wasn’t sure who was yelling at him, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted he gave the center fielder an earful.

“I just told him to play the game the right way,” Girardi said. “They are kicking our rear ends and show a little professionalism. I know you missed a pitch and you are frustrated by it. … He plays hard but there have been a number of clubs who have taken exception to some of the things he has done on the field.’’

Gomez was confronted by Yankees catcher John Ryan Murphy near the plate before he was pulled away toward his own dugout by his teammates.

According to ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand, Gomez mouthed off some more after the game.

"If they feel frustrated, that's not my problem," Gomez reportedly said. "This is part of the game, part of the nature of competition, and those who don't know how to compete, can just go home and cry."

Gomez later hit a three-run homer off Chris Capuano and rounded the base without incident.

Botched Mets deal has Wilmer Flores in tears during game (VIDEO)

Just when things seem to be going right for the New York Mets, as usual, the organization found some way to botch things up.

It was a bizarre, stunning and tear-filled night for the Mets, who agreed to a reported trade that would have sent Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez to New York for potential front-end right-hander Zack Wheeler and developing infielder Wilmer Flores.

When Flores, back starting at shortstop in place of Ruben Tejada, came off the field in the middle innings of Wednesday night's game at Citi Field, he first learned from fans near the dugout that the Mets had agreed to trade him to Milwaukee.

The shaken Flores' ordeal was then played out on the SNY broadcast, and with tears in his eyes, he still took the field one inning later.

“I heard from the fans, there was this rumor I was going to get traded. The fans were yelling for me,” Flores said. “When I came up, I heard everyone cheering, and I thought that was the only reason.“It was difficult to be out there, but nothing happened. But that’s what they told me, there’s no deal.”

It wasn't long after the Flores tears and near-completion of the blockbuster deal that everything came to an embarrassing conclusion — the trade was off.

“[The trade] has not and will not transpire,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters late Wednesday night.
The glitch came when the Mets were going over Gomez’s medicals. He was on the disabled list in April and into May with a hamstring issue, and he missed time last month with an ailing hip. And the Mets didn't were uncomfortable with that.

After a standing ovation for Flores by Mets fans in the seventh inning, injured Mets veterans David Wright and Michael Cuddyer followed Flores into the clubhouse before the game ended, thinking they were going to console a traded teammate.

“They just gave me a hug and told me that it’s nothing bad, it’s good,” Flores said. “But there’s no trade. I’m coming here tomorrow.”

Carlos Gomez once again robs Joey Votto of a home run (VIDEO)

Carlos Gomez leaps up against the center-field wall and comes down with the baseball, robbing Joey Votto of a solo home run Thursday night.

For Gomez — who was himself robbed of a homer by Billy Hamilton in the top of the first inning — it was sweet revenge.

For Votto, it was deja vu.

You may remember Gomez robbing Votto of a potential game-winning homer to end a game last year.

Joey sure does. And his reaction is priceless.

Carlos Gomez makes a young fan's day at Miller Park as she shares a hug and is overcome with emotion while meeting the Brewers star.

And you can totally forget that old "There's no crying in baseball" adage.

Tears notwithstanding, it looks like you just made the starstruck fan's day a little better Go-Go.

Matronly white-haired usher breaks up scrum for bat in stands

A elderly, white-haired female usher used her best finger-waving skills to break up a little tussle in the stands as Giants fans tried to stake their claim to a wayward bat at AT&T Park last night.

With tempers rising and about a dozen hands struggling to get the bat Carlos Gomez accidental flung into the stands, the matronly usher uses a stern brow and accusing finger to get the feuding fans to surrender the valued souvenir.

She also told them to sit up straight and keep their hands to themselves or she'd bring out the wooden spoon.

Carlos Gomez climbs Tal's Hill to make incredible catch (VIDEO)

Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros, is also home to one of baseball's most distinctive features: Tal's Hill, an elevated patch of grass in deepest center field.

The hill — which juts back 436-feet—makes playing center field at the park harder than at any other stadium in the country.

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez had no such trouble with the hill Tuesday night; he navigated the slope and made a brilliant catch to rob Houston catcher Jason Castro of an extra-base hit.

Gomez is having an outstanding year at the plate and this catch just might be one of the top plays of the year.

Carlos Gomez hits foul ball, thinks it's a home run

Carlos Gomez thought he led off Wednesday's Brewers-Phillies game with a home run but had no idea that the ball hooked foul of the left-field pole until after he already did his Trot of Shame around the bases.

The Milwaukee Brewers centerfielder seemed pretty confident he blasted the solo shot over the fence and pumped his fist as he rounded the bases.  It wasn't until the embarrassed player reached home plate to the sarcastic cheers of the Philadelphia home crowd that he realized his gaffe.

To add insult to injury, Gomez took a called strike three on the very next pitch.

The Phillies went on to win in ten innings.
