UCLA coaches don't want to press charges against P. Diddy: Report

The football coaching staff at UCLA has reportedly decided the best thing for the school and everyone involved in the P. Diddy assault case is for the police to drop the charges against the hip-hop mogul.

Sources directly connected with the team told TMZ, the coaches are regretful the situation escalated to an arrest. They apparently think Diddy is just an pesky helicopter-dad who let his ego get in the way, but they don't want to make this a courtroom spectacle — largely because it would be bad for the team. 

  

Sources with direct knowledge of the confrontation between Diddy — real name Sean Combs — and conditioning coach Sal Alosi told TMZ, after the incident the coaches all decided to just let it go. They believe an intern called UCLA police and when the cops arrived, they asked to see a video of the incident and that was enough to lock Diddy up.

According to TMZ, head coach Jim Mora does not want a criminal prosecution. The interns who were present and allegedly threatened could press the case further, but if Mora is against it they would probably follow suit.

Diddy claims he was "defending himself" during the incident that led to his arrest for assault with a deadly weapon in LA, says his representative.

Monday's alleged assault — involving a kettlebell, used for weight training — took place on the UCLA campus where the rapper's son is a redshirt junior defensive back on the football team.

Nathalie Moar, who represents Diddy said reports of the incident were "wholly inaccurate".

"What we can say now is that any actions taken by Mr. Combs were solely defensive in nature to protect himself and his son" said Moar. "We are confident that once the true facts are revealed, the case will be dismissed."

Jail records show Combs was released on bail on Monday evening, after posting $160,000 bond.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the case will go to the L.A. County D.A. for felony review next week. The D.A. could prosecute even without victims but, a video could be problematic.

Kanye and 50 Cent check out Mike Tyson's Broadway debut

Mike Tyson's first show on Broadway may be getting lukewarm reviews but it is bringing out rap music's hottest stars— even though the star of the show got a couple of them mixed up during a shoutout during the show "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth."

On Tuesday, Kanye West and 50 Cent were among those who came out to the Longacre Theatre to see Tyson bring his life story to the stage.

Even though play is about the former heavyweight boxer's own life, it sounds like he flubbed a few of his lines.

According to the New York Daily News' Gatecrasher, Tyson ad libbed a couple of shoutouts to Fitty and "Puffy"— not Kanye— despite the fact that Diddy was nowhere in the house.

Tyson also took a shot at Fitty— a former drug dealer from the streets of New York— and worked it into the show.  As he talked about his past bouts with substance abuse, Tyson yelled out to the rapper," You know cocaine, right 50?"

After the Spike Lee-directed one-man show was over, Kanye and Fitty went backstage to congratulate Tyson and the director.

Diddy's kid gets controversial free ride at UCLA

The son of wealthy music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is getting a $54,000-a-year scholarship to play football at UCLA and a lot of people aren't too happy about it.

Justin Combs, a senior at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, N.Y.,  is getting a full ride to one of California's most elite schools on a football scholarship and his pops won't have to shell out one penny from his estimated $475 million net worth.

The university responded to criticism about its decision to grant the 5-foot-9, 170 pound defensive back a full scholarship when his father could probably buy the team a whole new stadium.

The younger Combs will be wearing the blue and gold jersey for the Bruins this fall after turning down offers from Illinois, Iowa and Virginia.  He was ranked No. 133 at his position by 2012 Scout.com High School Football Ranking.

UCLA claims Combs assistance is no rich-get-richer scheme and based on merit.

"There's a misconception out there that somehow athletic scholarships would take away money from low-income students who need need-based aid," said school spokesman Ricardo Vazquez.  "That's not the case.  Athletic scholarships are awarded strictly on the basis of athletic and academic ability."

He said scholarships for student athletes are funded by sports ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and private donations.

An out-of-state student pays about $54,877 a year in tuition and living costs, according to UCLA.

The older Combs declined to comment on the scholarship controversy.

"As a parent, today is one of the proudest moments of my life," he said late last year after his son committed to UCLA.  "This is everything a father could want for his son, for him to excel at what he loves to do and is truly passionate about."

It wouldn't be hard to imagine Diddy whipping out the old checkbook and making one out to UCLA sometime in the future.  His son earned the handout, his father will probably make it right.
