Chicago billboard raises stakes on USA-CAN semifinal: 'Loser keeps Bieber': PHOTO

Canada already beat the U.S. in the women's gold medal hockey final so it's likely Celine Dion is probably America's to keep. But one Chicago-area billboard has now raised the stakes so high that no red-blooded Yank will accept anything less than a victory in the men's Olympic hockey semifinal Friday.

You gotta belieb believe.

John Tavares done for NHL season with torn MCL, meniscus: Report

It's an NHL club's worst fear every four years and for the New York Islanders, that reality is slowly sinking in — after seeing their best player go down during the Winter Games.

John Tavares will miss the remainder of the NHL season, according to a league source, after suffering a knee injury while playing for Canada in the Olympics.

The source said Tavares may need surgery to repair a torn medial collateral ligament and a torn meniscus in his left knee, but that determination will be made when Tavares returns to Long Island from Sochi. He is staying with Canada through its final two games of the Olympics to attend the medal ceremony.

He should be ready for training camp in September.

Tavares, the Islanders captain, leads the team with 66 points. In his four-plus seasons since joining the Islanders as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft, Tavares has been very durable, having missed only four games, including one this season with a minor hip injury.

The NHL star was hurt when he tried to sneak past Latvia's Arturs Kulda along the boards in the second period of Canada's quarterfinal game on Wednesday, but his left leg banged awkwardly with Kulda's leg and then the boards.

Tavares could not put any weight on the leg and hobbled off to the dressing room. He was initially ruled out just for the remainder of the Olympic tournament, but a MRI exam on Thursday in Sochi revealed the full damage.

The Islanders do not return to action from the Olympic break until Feb. 27. They are 12 points out of the final playoff spot with 22 games to go.

AHL Penguins to wear commemorative Miracle on Ice uniform (PHOTO)

When the USA hockey team plays Russia in Sochi on Saturday, it will mark the 34th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice — arguably the greatest moment in American sports history and a story that will be repeated by NBC announcers leading up to the game until the sound of Al Michaels voice makes your ears bleed.

To commemorate that glorious bronze medal game between the old Cold War rivals, the AHL's Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins will host the Providence Bruins during  an Olympic Hockey Celebration night and wear altered versions of iconic white sweaters Team USA wore in 1980 up in Lake Placid.

But the Penguins are bringing them back with a slight change — WBS replaces USA across the chest. Otherwise they are the same.

Granted, WBS across your chest doesn't have the same national pride as USA but it's the sentiment that counts. And these special-occasion jerseys will be available after the game for auction to benefit charity.

1980 was the last time a U.S. hockey team stood on the gold medal podium at an Olympics, so maybe the Penguins' special unis will be an inspiration for their own team.

Al Michaels busted for suspicion of DUI

Al Michaels — the legendary sports announcer most famous for his call of the "Miracle on Ice" hockey game at the 1980 Olympics — was arrested Friday for suspicion of DUI, reports TMZ.

Law enforcement officers told TMZ the 68-year-old Michaels went through a a DUI checkpoint in Santa Monica at approximately 10 p.m. on Friday.  The officers detected the odor of alcohol while speaking to him and placed him under arrest.

Sounds like he went from one Miracle on Ice to a few too many vodkas on the rocks.

The famous Emmy Award-winning announcer was reportedly pulled over and given a field sobriety test and, after performing poorly, he was taken into custody. Michaels was released from jail at 4:15 AM on Saturday on his own recognizance.

According to our sources, Michaels blood alcohol level was right at the legal limit -- he blew a borderline .08 and a .09 in two breathalyzer tests.

TMZ's sources say Michaels could not have been nicer throughout the ordeal.

Considered an American icon in the world of sports broadcasting, Michaels' voice has been heard on television sets for nearly four decades.  He was the play-by-play man for "Monday Night Football" for 20 years before moving over to "Sunday Night Football."

He's also done baseball and basketball ... but his call of the United States' 4-3 upset hockey victory over the Soviet team on February 22, 1980 still stands as one of  the greatest of all time — and where the strains of the popular "U-S-A ... U-S-A" chant first reached a fever pitch.
