Cowboys won't be selling any Michael Sam jerseys: Report

Michael Sam had the sixth-highest-selling jersey in the NFL this offseason when training camps began. But if you’re looking for the Cowboys to cash in on that craze now that the NFL's first openly gay player has joined the team, you'll be surprised.

Sam is one of 10 players on the Cowboys practice squad. The club doesn’t mass produce jerseys for practice squad players, and a club official said Wednesday they won’t make an exception for the No. 46 jersey Sam is now wearing.

So you won't find any.

NFL rules strictly limit the jersey numbers that can be worn by position players, Sam almost certainly wouldn’t wear a No. 46 if he was called up to the Cowboys’ 53-man roster. The NFL rule book states that defensive linemen can only wear numbers between 50-79 or 90-99. Numbers in the 40s are reserved for running backs, H-backs or defensive backs.

A quick glance at the Cowboys roster shows that there were plenty of available numbers that would have fit with Sam’s position. And that has theorists buzzing about the reasons behind the No. 46.

On Outsports.com, Cyd Zeigler noted that 1946 was the year the NFL and MLB broke their color barriers, though he cautioned that this was only a “subtle connection.”

So, unless you want to go out and get a customized version of Sam's new No. 46 Cowboys jersey, you may want to wait a little while longer.

Mark Sanchez's Buttfumble jersey sells for $820 at auction: Report

The 2012 Thanksgiving game between the Jets and Patriots will always be remembered by New York fans as the apex of humility in Gang Green football — highlighted that day when quarterback Mark Sanchez hilariously ran head first into the backside of teammate Brandon Moore.

It doesn't seem like a year and a half since the infamous Buttfumble, but now a Jets fan named Jake Hendrickson inadvertently came across a sweaty part of the game and paid $820 to immortalize the occasion, reports NJ.com.

Hendrickson, who lives in California, happened to be browsing the NFL auctions website last week when he noticed a game-worn Mark Sanchez jersey was available. But what really caught Hendrickson's eye was the date: Nov. 22, 2012.

Buttfumble Day.

Hendrickson explained what he had to do from there to Metro New York's Kristian Dyer, who wrote it up for Yahoo's Shutdown Corner:

"There's no way I could let it get in the hands of an anti-fan or something of that manner to be shoved in our face. The auction itself had like five days left on it before it closed so basically I set an alarm on my calendar to remind me an hour before so I could be at my computer. I was prepared for an all-out bidding war. There were a couple other people I was bidding against but it being the offseason I don’t think there were many people looking for football memorabilia so it didn’t go nearly as high as I had anticipated. Plus every time someone would outbid me by $5 or $10 I was raising by a hundred bucks just to show I meant businesses.”

Hendrickson said he plans to frame the jersey and stick it on his wall. "Until we win a Super Bowl," he told Dyer," or I can get together enough money to put it on a rocket ship and shoot it to outer space because I don’t think it belongs on this planet anymore."

And at least it won't fall into the hands of some scheming New Englander.

Manti Te'o has the top selling NFL rookie jersey

That whole fake girlfriend scandal with Manti Te'o last winter might have dropped the duped former Notre Dame linebacker's draft stock but it has spiked the San Diego Chargers' second-round pick's jersey sales.

ESPN is reporting that the Te'o's No. 50 jersey was flying off the shelves and was the top seller among all NFL rookies from April 1-June 30 on NFLShop.com.  It proves again that — with all of the sensationalist publicity that came with the bizarre situation — weird stuff sells.

Following the naive, but likable, Te'o in rookie sales were Rams receiver Tavon Austin, Bills quarterback EJ Manuel, Vikings receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and Packers running back Eddie Lacy. Notably, that top-five list does not include Jets quarterback Geno Smith.

As for the rest of the league, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has taken his place at the top of the list. Not surprising, considering last year's midseason replacement led the 49ers to the NFC championship and nearly pulled off a Super Bowl win.

Joining the quarterback race in which San Francisco and Seattle have engaged this offseason, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is No. 2 on the list. Following him were Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

Te'o's top-seller is a surprise considering the small market NFL city he plays for. It's gotta be the lightning bolts.
