Riot breaks out at Australian darts tournament (VIDEO)

The final of the Invitational Darts Tournament in Melbourne, Australia was halted for after a riot broke out among members of the crowd during the match.

The championship — which saw Michael van Gerwen comeback from 5-1 and 8-4 deficits before eventually triumphing over Australian Simon Whitlock 9-8 — was stopped for a period of time as officials attempted to restore order to the chaos inside the Etihad Stadium.

Chairs were thrown and tables were overturned as spectators ran amok at the popular tournament which is in its third year.

Witnesses said people were jumping on the tables until they broke and others were body slamming some spectators. Security guards tried and failed to defuse the situation, before dozens of riot police entered the stadium.

Photos show one man dressed as Batman's sidekick Robin wrestling with other people in costumes and some pictures show a gang of Oompa Loompas brawling and throwing furniture.

It is unclear what sparked the mayhem — which sounds more like a scene from The Warriors than a darts match — but one has to suspect alcohol was involved.

Darts walk-on girl takes elegant tumble during tournament (VIDEO)

Michael van Gerwen moved through to the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay darts in Blackpool with a comfortable win over over Ian White ... Oh who cares.

The real news before the world number one dart thrower took command of his match, walk-on girl Daniella Allfree took a tumble while heading off the stage!

Ms. Allfree was okay and went on to do some more introductory struts. But who knew there was so much beauty involved within the world of darts?

Scottish darts fan banned for life after spitting at league star

PDC chief Barry Hearn slammed the "disgraceful" behaviour of "one idiot" who spat at darts legend Phil "The Power" Taylor during a Premier League match in Glasgow and banned the phlegm-ejecting man from future events for life.

Taylor was on his way to the stage to face Raymond van Barneveld, who he beat 7-3, when the Englishman was hit in the ear by spit from a spectator.

But Hearn confirmed the man involved was removed from the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre immediately after the disgusting incident.

"It was disgraceful behavior," said Hearn. "The guy was ejected immediately and won't be allowed back to watch darts.

"There were 8,000 people there and one idiot decides to do that. Premier League darts does not just have a positive atmosphere in arenas, it's the hottest sport ticket.

"You always get the odd idiot, as you do in society, so there is no better deterrent than kicking them out of the event."
