Monster truck plows into crowd, killing three and injuring at least 15 (VIDEO)

At least three people were killed during a monster truck event in the Netherlands on Sunday when a driver lost control of his vehicle and plowed into a crowd of people.

The monster truck — fitted with tractor-sized wheels — had just completed a popular stunt where it is driven over several parked cars when it veered left, running over dozens of spectators who were standing behind temporary crowd barriers.

Local media had quoted Hans Gerritsen, the mayor of Haaksbergen, as saying that three people had died. Local police could not immediately be reached to confirm the number of dead. Ambulances and emergency services were quickly on the scene, including a trauma helicopter from Germany.

One of the event organizers told local news he believes the problem could have stemmed from one of two things — either the gas pedal got stuck or the brakes failed. 

The driver is reportedly being questioned by police.

At least eight people were killed and over 80 injured after a "monster truck" ran over spectators during the "Extremo Aeroshow" in Chihuahua, Mexico, according to the Mexican state news agency Notimex.

The city's mayor, Marco Quezada Martinez, told the agency that he has ordered an investigation into the incident after the truck lost control after rolling over an obstacle and plowing into the crowded stands. Initial reports blame the tragedy on mechanical failure. But witnesses said the driver lost his helmet and hit his head before the terrible scene unfolded.

According to the event's website, the show includes aerobatics, skydiving, hot air ballooning, motorcycles, fireworks and monster trucks.

Monster truck crashes into crowd during Oregon race

A truck racing at the "Monster Air 2012" in Harrisburg, Oregon lost control of its hydraulic steering system, hit a mud patch and plowed into a group of spectators Saturday.

Three people were injured at the Harrisburg MotorSports Complex and taken to a hospital in nearby Eugene.  Sheriff's officials said their injuries were not serious.

The 1975 Ford pickup, fitted with large tractor tires had slowed to 10 mph when it swerved over a barrier and into the onlookers.  Witnesses said the truck didn't run over any of the injured and only "pushed them back."



Dan Mills, who built and runs the complex, said he had been in touch with the injured men and will continue the three-day show on Sunday with added precautions that include not allowing spectators into the area where the accident occurred.

The driver was identified as Kyle Atchley.
