Man dies trying to complete Krispy Kreme Challenge

A man has died after starting a charity race in which contestants are also supposed to eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts midway through the 5-mile run.

What started as a tasty and fun way to raise money for a good cause took a turn for the worse when 58-year-old Jeff Woods dropped out of the race during the first mile Saturday morning complaining of chest pains. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Woods left the race before reaching the Krispy Kreme location halfway through the 5-mile course — where competitors eat a dozen of the glazed and sprinkled treats before completing the final 2½ miles to the finish line.

The annual race is organized by students at North Carolina State University and benefits the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. It’s in its 12th year.

Here’s the Krispy Kreme Donut Dog created by the Wilmington Blue Rocks (PHOTO)

It was only a week ago that the Arizona Diamondbacks unleashed the Churro Dog upon its baseball loving fans. Not to be outdone, the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a Class A affiliate of the Royals, unveiled their own version of the sweetened ballpark favorite —  the Krispy Kreme donut hot dog.

The gut-busting hot dog is topped with raspberry jam, sprinkled with bacon and nestled inside a Krispy Kreme donut.

Brian Radle, the Blue Rocks' Director of Advertising Sales said it best: "Krispy Kreme doughnuts and ballpark hot dogs are two of America's favorite treats, so why not combine them?"

The tantalizing creation is yet unnamed (Krispy Kreme Donut Dog is tentative), so if you have any suggestions, the Blue Rocks are listening.

One problem: Do you wash this concoction down with a cold beverage or a hot cup of coffee?
