Giants to sign top lineman out of CFL: Report

The New York Giants are going to the land of Molson and maple syrup in order to add a little more depth to their tentative offensive line.

CFL center, Brett Jones, is expected to sign with the Giants on Tuesday, reported The Calgary Herald.

Jones was a rising star with the Calgary Stampeders and the 23-year-old was named the league's top rookie in 2013 and the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in 2014 as he helped Calgary win the Grey Cup.

At 6-2, 318 pounds and with decent athleticism, Jones is an intriguing prospect for the Giants. He's unlikely to be given any sort of guarantee of a starting spot or money, and will likely have to work his way up as if he's an undrafted free agent.

The native of Saskatchewan and graduate of the University of Regina was a second-round pick because he told teams he was interested in attending medical school.

Jones will become a free agent after playing two years in the CFL.

The Calgary Stampeders were so pumped up after winning the Grey Cup, they broke the trophy.

As Calgary linebacker Juwan Simpson hoisted the Grey Cup above his head to celebrate Calgary’s 20-16 victory over Hamilton on Sunday night, the cup section of the trophy started to split from its base.

“I think I’m the one that did it,” said Simpson. “I don’t know. I grabbed it and was excited, and all of a sudden it got a little (loose). Some glue and some duct tape and it’ll be good.

“I don’t know if I was holding it (when it broke) or I was holding it before it went off, but I felt it weaken in my hands — and I politely gave it to somebody else.”

Simpson said he hopes the CFL does not send him a bill for the mishap.

“But I got me a Grey Cup check,” he said. “In a worst-case scenario, I can pay for it.”

It’s the sixth time the CFL championship trophy has reportedly been broken during Grey Cup celebrations.

But, like he said, a little glue and duct tape, eh?
