Stampede after Mayweather-Maidana fight injures dozens (VIDEO)

Dozens of people were injured after a chaotic scene erupted following the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas Saturday night.

A battalion chief for the Clark County Fire Department said 24 people were taken to Las Vegas hospitals after a panicked crowd stormed out the doors of the MGM Grand Garden arena following the Mayweather-Maidana fight.

Witnesses say the stampede started when they heard a bang that sounded like a gunshot.  The sound was caused by a temporary wall that fell over.

A crowd of 300 – 400 boxing fans then ran from the arena area and into a narrow walkway leading to the casino and got crushed or trampled against walls and glass doors that shattered.

One eyewitness said the confusion prompted five or six fights, with Metro Police involved in the melee, according to KLAS.

According to the CCFD, most of the injured who were transported by ambulance from the hotel were treated for minor traumatic injuries, such as strains, sprains, foot and ankle injuries, back injuries, injuries associated with being stepped on and one leg laceration. The incident was under control by 1 a.m.

No one suffered serious injuries.

Police and MGM officials are looking into what caused the incident.
