Jeter packing on the pounds during ankle surgery recovery

When we last saw Derek Jeter, the New York Yankees shortstop was being helped from the Yankee Stadium infield with a broken ankle during Game 1 of the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers.

Fans had been waiting over six weeks to see how the 38-year-old player fared after surgery to repair his damaged left ankle and yesterday, they got to view a lot more of the Yankees' Captain then they ever have before — especially around the middle area of his normally fit body.

Jeter was spotted at a South Beach hotel in Miami Thursday wearing a walking boot to protect his valuable joint.  Photos of Jeter published in The New York Post showed New York's No. 1 bachelor sporting a bit of a paunch underneath his powder blue T-shirt.

According to general manger Brian Cashman, Jeter has been in a non-weight bearing situation and will continue to be until January.  That means his workout routine has boundries — if he can do any cardio at all — and limited to his upper body because he can't put any weight on his left foot.

Jeter has been spotted at the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa a couple of times this offseason, but not on a regular schedule.  It's unknown if he was there for treatment, workouts or remember what infield dirt smells like again.

The injury happened to the same ankle which had been nagging Jeter through the last half of the 2012 season.  He broke it Oct. 14 during the embarrassing series against the Tigers while chasing down a ground ball.

The image of Jeter being helped from the field by manager Joe Girardi and a trainer is one fans would like to erase from their minds.  But yesterday's shots of the pale and bloated Jeets won't be used as bedroom posters either.

The popular Jeter signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Yankees before the 2011 season and has one more year left worth $17 million with an option for a fourth year when he turns 40.

Anyone who has watched the prideful Jeter over the course of his Hall of Fame career knows it won't be long he is back in the gym working off the chimichangas.

Remember also, pinstripes are very slimming.

    1. Saw Jeter is person and he is freakin hot! When you see these guys in person, you realize how slim and fit they are. TV adds a lot. I am sure his "paunch" is less than what the media are making of it and I have no doubt it will be gone when he is ready to make a comeback. There is no doubting this: Jeter is a class act and always has been!

    2. Derek will be fine,,I think working on healing his ankle should take precedent over the gut for now...he has a great work ethic..it won't take long for him to get in shape..

  2. I don't feel so bad. I look like Jeter after my Thanksgiving.

  3. jeter is a wonderful man going through a difficult transition period of rehabilitation. all the while being scrutinized continually in the public eye.at age 38, without many options as far as aerobic activities to perform while wearing an orthopedic boot, it is easy to see how he might become a bit of a fatass.

  4. jeter will be back

  5. I'm sure that as soon as he is cleared to begin working out, he'll hit the gym with a vengence and will be in his normal, fit condition. I expect him to have another good year in 2013. I just hope he doesn't hit any foul balls off his left ankle OR that they develop a better ankle guard for him.

    3. He could do a few arm curls while watching tv. He looks like just an average Joe...

  6. I wish I looked THAT "out of shape" when I was 38. The media exaggerates EVERYTHING.

  7. He's still hot! As hard as he works there will be no doubt he'll get himself back in shape for the season.

  8. I'm sure Derek will be back in the gym as soon as he is cleared to do so, and will lose all the extra weight. Give the guy a break; he seems to be a great guy talented but not conceited. You never hear anything bad about him, and compared to some other atheletes I can think of, that says a lot.

  9. Mr Jeter is and alway's will be, the classist Yankee, to ever wear the Pin stripes........

  10. This just goes to show you how weight and image obsessed our culture is. God forbid the man gain a few pounds while recovering from debilitating surgery. Maybe he should take up bulimia while he can't exercise. Way to go, society. Way to go.

  11. Hey, it's the holidays. Give the man a break!! He's been seen around town here in Tampa and no one is saying "whoa, Jeter's fat!"

  12. Absolutely no reason for that much gain. If this was a red sox player or a blue jay u NY fans would be absolutely ripping him. Recovery will be hard enough without this. Im pretty sure his ankle doesnt stop him from eating properly. Pretty sure he can afford a nutritionist as well. He looks more like one of us beer drinking, junk food eating fans than a 17 million dollar ball player.

    1. actually you are wrong about the fact us NY fans would be ripping on other teams because true Yankee fans have class. Come one look at Papi he's big is anyone busting on him... NO so why would we bust on anyother player in the Major Leagues. The only way we bust on someone is if the are using Roides *Arod* so to you and your comment we have class as Yankee fans.

  14. Maybe he should have married his girlfriend earlier. If he packs on the pounds his options will be limited.

  15. Really? You jokers don't have nothing else better to do than look at a man's "paunch" (whatever the hell that means) under his shirt. C'mon, give the man a break, he's recovering from an injury for God's sake!

  16. Much ado about nothing............lol.

  17. Yankees and Redsox suck

  18. At least his weight gain isn't from taking illegal performance enhancing drugs like some of his teammates *coughArodcough* Give the guy a break!

    ReplyDelete
  19. all that FAT money under his shirt!

  20. Who cares, there's a lot more shit going on in this world than jeter's fat gut

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree. Jeter's a class act. I'll always remember him this past summer at Fenway's 100th celebration standing alone in front of the Yankee dugout and cheering on and clapping for the Sox legends being honored. It was so genuine. So cool. So classy. No wonder he's the captain! Get well soon D.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He has a long way to go to reach Prince Fielder's level...now THAT is FAT!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. they as a ball club

  24. Jeter is the best ever period. I'm a sox fan and I know Jeter will be back in perfect shape again to beat us with class. Sox fans have a little bit more to worry about right now besides Jeter's gut. We sucked last year and he had an all-star season. Anyways, he can still beat up any of you talking crap about him. He's a 38-year-old baseball player who is still competing with 25-year-olds and you want to complain about a little weight gain? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Rude individual - apparently your sense for sportsmanship is lacking and you are so completely articulate

    ReplyDelete
  26. Seriously? He had ankle surgery. My husband sustained an ankle injury while he was in the Army. He had to have ankle surgery and was in a boot identical to the one pictured above. He gained a lot of weight because he couldn't put any weight on the ankle for a long period of time. The inactivity and over-eating caused by depression out of fear he would have to end his military career wreaked havoc on him. Once he was given the go ahead, he did physical therapy, and slowly got back in to a shape. He dropped all the weight he gained in 4 months. So cut Jeter some slack, and quit being so judgmental. When he heals and gets back into shape, I bet he will look better than you do. You'll look more like a "fat bastard" that he will.

  27. Every single of one you guys including me which you were Jeter so I'd shut your "grocery holes" if I were you... smh

    ReplyDelete
  28. Derek Jeter is gonna have a hard time losing that pot-belly. And look at the double chin he has grown. Two more months of the diet he has been in for the past 2 months, and he will have no more chin and neck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I hardly recognized him in the photo at first. He will be back in shape and hot as ever this coming season.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Aww give the man a freakin break.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Non-weight bearing?

What is he doing in the picture?

    ReplyDelete
  32. LOL ... grocery holes!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not really a Jeter fan, but I wish him well on recovery. To the ones calling him a fat ....; I can only imagine that it's coming from a fatter person, or a pencil necked geek that spent their time taking stats in HS. Actually, that's an insult to the guys that kept stats; I'll just stick to fat couch potato or pencil necked wannabe that never did much of anything athletic wise.

  34. Just because he put on a few pounds doens't mean he isn't still a great player. I am a yankees fan threw and threw I dont care I will say it I am from New England and I LOVE THE YANKEES! Jeter will be back for 2013 looking better than ever weight and all so for all you haters out there be ready cause the bronx bombers are going to back in full force in 2013!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. How can anyone of you jerkoffs say the yankees suck. They have the best record in the history of baseball never to be surpassed by any team.

  36. One of the best shortstops, possibly the best in the game. Can also hit homeruns backside Oh and how many WS Championships!!

  37. everyone has their 15 mins of fame! then they all go down hill and get fat!

  38. He looks like Billy Baldwin now! check it out people. Never thought he was good looking If he wasn't a baseball player nobody would give him a look and he would get NO WOMAN!!!!!WOMAN only go out with him because he is FAMOUS. But all good things come to a end. About 5 more years he will be really fat and old looking. nobody will remember him...He will be wash up just like the rest of these famous people. they all have their time and then people forget them. LOOK at Michael Jackson everyone forgot about him! He was a legend....not Jeter

    ReplyDelete
  39. I also agree. This is just ridiculous! I bet most of the negative comments are from the male species that could only wish they had as much class as Jeter....or maybe they enjoy seeing one of the most sexiest men alive gain a little weight. JEALOUS ANYONE!!! He still looks GREAT and he will get back in shape as soon as he can. Its too bad that these "people" only care about appearance. There is so much more to Jeter than that. He can get rid of the weight but you "people" can't get rid of stupidity! Get well Derek! Can't wait to have you back!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Give the guy a break!!! We all have our down times. He will be back up in no time when his doctor allows. We love ya in Michigan Jeter!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jesus give him a break, so he gained a little weight during recovery. He'll take it off in Spring training. He's a ball player. I was a 5'8" 210 lb. fat ass who was an All-American 2nd Baseman in D1 college. John Kruuk said it best, "I'm not an athlete, I'm a baseball player!"

    ReplyDelete
  42. I assume that all you people that are trashing Jeter look like Adonis right?

    ReplyDelete
  43. In no way shape form or fashion would I be considered a Yankee Fan. But Derek Jeter is an exception. He is a Class act. You can see the passion in his play. He loves Baseball. Is one of the few that can still be considered a role model to young children. Not just in baseball but in life. Anyone that has had a serious injury at his age would probably pack on a few pounds. I know as soon as he is cleared to begin rehabilitation he will slim down and be back, and I will once again hate him as it is a requirement if you are a Boston Fan. I admire this man because he reminds me why Baseball is the greatest sport there is. At least he has a reason to pack on the pounds not like the 40 lbs of head fat that Bonds gained while taking steroids instead of dedicated hard work. Derek I wish you a speedy and full recovery

    ReplyDelete
  44. Honestly to all of the negative Anonymous idiots bashing a man that has done nothing but right by the people and for the game grow the @*&k up. I am a diehard Yankee fan and they do more for baseball than you lazy sacks do. So if you are prepared to do battle with words don’t hide. I assure the pain of looking at your faces would be worse than any word I can say. DEREK JETER will always be associated with class ALWAYS. So please tell us what your claim to fame is other than bashing a man that was hurt doing his job. Come on you are all pathetic and you know who you are. Just because he has money and class does not make it right for you all to bash him. DEREK JETER you are an American hero. Stay that way. Don’t listen to the pathetic losers that hide behind words and probably are all 500 pounds and never seen a baseball field much less know how to play.

  45. Why is this news? ANY person who is limited physically will gain weight. Its natural. A person who is as dedicated to his profession like Jeter will be back in playing shape as soon as he is allowed to begin full weight bearing activity. I'm amazed at what "journalists" consider newsworthy. Says it all....says it all.

    ReplyDelete
  46. When it comes time for him to play again Jeter will be back in shape.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That man is FINE like sweet red wine. For all you haters you wish you could look like that. He is a classy gentleman.Get it? Got it? GOOD!

  48. Can you imagine the farts he rips?

  49. So, because he put up a couple of punds is the end of the world as we know it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I've read the many posts by a specific "Anonymous"...the ones that resonate envy and bitterness towards Derek Jeter. And for what??? For gaining weight??? Derek epitomizes class. He volunteers for charitable organizations, he started a foundation that helps his community, and he has NEVER brought shame to NY or to the Yankee organization.

In your twisted mind, Derek is fat but you're ugly. And you CAN'T get rid of ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Derek Eater!
He will be back in shape before any of us!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Derek Eater... that's the funniest thing on this page LOL. For all of you taking shoots at Jeter... if you had a chance to bet everything you own on him returning in great shape you would do it in a minute because you all know the guy is a world class athlete. And for the media... if Derek was photographed here "in shape", they would probably say he's on steroids because how else could a guy stay in shape after having to be off his feet with an injury for so long.... the guy can't win here but he can win FIVE rings.... amen

    ReplyDelete
  53. Opps, I menat SIX rings...how could I forget 2009 LOL

    ReplyDelete
  54. Nope..it's FIVE...LOL... it's Monday can you tell?
