Eight people shot during Oklahoma City Thunder celebration

A celebration surrounding the home arena of the Oklahoma City Thunder was shattered by the sounds of gunfire and screams on Monday night after the team had eliminated the Los Angeles Lakers to advance to the Western Conference Finals.

According to The Oklahoman newspaper, shots rang out around the Chesapeake Energy Arena at approximately 11:35 p.m. CT and at least eight people were wounded by the gunfire near the downtown Oklahoma City venue.

A pregnant woman was reportedly kicked and suffered "blunt trauma" during the incident which occurred near a crowd of 7,500 people who had been watching the game on large screens in an area nicknamed "Thunder Alley."

The shooting victims' conditions were not known, but early reports said one person was shot in the back, another in the upper arm and a third in the hand.

"Everything is very, very preliminary.  We still don't know the actual number of victims.  We believe that one person is critical, and the other injuries are not believed to be life-threatening," Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter nelson told The Oklahoman.

Two suspects have been taken into custody, said Oklahoma police Capt. Lisa Camacho told the newspaper.  The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still not known.

The Thunder will go on to face the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

  1. I would have never thought that kind of thing would happen in the heartland of America! You expect that sort of behavior in LA but no in Oklahoma or Texas. What kind of moron thinks it's ok to fire a gun in the middle of a crowd to celebrate?

    2. According to police reports this did not happen near the arena nor was it related in anyway to the game. OKC, Tulsa, KC and many of the larger urban ares of middle America have issues with violence. It's everywhere.

  3. It had nothing to do with the game or Thunder fans. It was high school graduation. Some idiot thought it would be a good idea to have to high schools graduate downtown.

    1. dude did you see what happened after the Vancouver Canucks lost game 7 of the finals last year??? but regardless, that is beyond the point. the point is that a tragedy happened and it has nothing to do with race, it was a cowardly act and i don't care what color they were...

  6. Give me a break who did it? Most of important! Why? I never understood a game that only freaks can play. What I mean is that people who are 6'8" to 7'5. The game was designed for people who where 5'6" The court size should have been changed and the height of the hoop should also have been changed. You can see that I'm not a fan of basketball. It is the most none team sport there is. Coaches lose their job when the star player doesn't like the coach. What ever happen to word team in basketball. How about this give yourself a name oh let say World Peace then elbow a player who is beating you. I just love basket ball as you can see. Myself I have enjoyed shooting hoops. It is one of the cheapest sports to play get a hoop and a basket ball and your in business. What I do enjoy is street basket ball. The problem with professorial basket ball is the players out grew the court.

  7. They can no longer point fingers at L.A. as the land of fruits and nuts. Obviously, Oklahoma has its own problems. While it probably has less fruits, it appears to have its surplus of nuts also.

  8. It is sad how the press just throws out a head line to get people to read the artical. The shooting was not out side the arena but in the brick town districk down the street about a half mile plus away. The police stated that they do not believe the shooting had anything to do with the game at all. even after knowing this, the press play it up as eight people shoot during okc thunder celebration. On top of that, the other news reports say that seven is the number not eight. but hey let just throw in one more becouse it sounds better. Hell how many people were shot in LA last night? Should just add them to the celebration as well. To me, all they are doing is trying to tarnish a great game last night.

  9. Wow, and you ar not racist. Sounds racist to me. Hate the crime not the criminal. God commands us to love one another. My prayers go out to the victims, the criminal and certainly you that you may find Christ in your lifetime. I believe you have more hate in your heart than the shooter. And I know you'll bash me for this comment.
