Raiders cheerleaders win $1.25 million lawsuit over low pay: Report

The Oakland Raiders cheerleaders will have something to cheer about this season even if their 2014 NFL team doesn't.

The Raiders have agreed to pay $1.25 million to settle a lawsuit alleging they failed to pay the Raiderettes minimum wage and forced them to cough up fines for things like bringing the wrong pom-poms to practice.

The team and attorneys for the 90 ladies released a statement Thursday announcing the settlement.

Two Raiderettes filed a lawsuit in January claiming that the team underpaid them. The suit alleged that the team withheld the cheerleaders' pay until after the season, didn't fairly compensate the women for all their hours of work and asked the cheerleaders to pay for many of their own businesses expenses.

One of the cheerleaders who filed the lawsuit estimated that she earned less than $5 an hour in pay.

The settlement covers the cheerleaders who worked for the team from 2010-13. The proposal calls for each cheerleader to be paid an average of $6,000 for each season worked from 2010-12 and $2,500 for the 2013 season to cover unpaid expenses and minimum wage. The Raiders raised their pay in 2013, leading to the smaller settlement for that season.

Too bad they couldn't put a price on team spirit.

    1. actually if you did your research the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders all get paid upwards towards 30-40k a year, which considering they only partake in 8 regular season games, that's a pretty good damn amount. stop bitching without knowing the facts

    2. yeah, you need a lot of money for a job that can be filled by literally hundreds of thousands of women. The Raiders could have a new crew for every town they stop at and no one would know the difference other than people who read it on the web. if ladies want paid they need a job where there services are worth something. They are just pretty girls to look at.

    3. who cares what you think. There is a prestige for selling yourself as a sex symbol? Really? Do strippers have that same prestige then? Come on. Fair wages for services yes, pay women equally, absolutely, however some of the other things that you are ranting about are crazy. Stick to the bigger issues or just shut the hell up.

    4. And thus the reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers do not have or never will have cheerleaders. Not worth the hassle. Play football baby . . .

    1. Like the song in " Fiddler on the Roof " Tradition, tradition, tradition .... Sports and cheerleaders go hand in hand. Why then don't we go a
step further ... quit paying millions of dollars to athletes. They should play for fun or get rid of them ... Right? .... WRONG!!!

    2. There is something WRONG when the league makes Billions and Cheerleaders are payed less than the Security Guards and Janitors - should be payed on the Entertainment wage scale-30 year combat Vet

  4. So out of $1.25 million they get around 14K if they were there the entire time the suit covers. Wow. Lawyers WIN!

      2011/12 season - 90 girls x $6000 (average) = $540,000
      2012/13 season- 90 girls x $2500 (average) = $225,000
      equals - $1,305,000

  6. Everyone knows that becoming a professional football league cheerleader has nothing to do about the money and should never be about money. I guarantee there would be thousands of women more than willing to do this for free. It's about prestige and always has been.

    1. If it was about prestige, then why are they suing for money. No, they want the money and they deserve it too. How about some prestige for you Jack? We'll dress you up in a cheerleader outfit then lets see if you can dance as well as them. That should make you feel just as prestigious as them. I'll give you the $5 / hour myself. But you have to travel to the stadium on your own funds.

    2. They didn't sue for prestige, they sued for money. Tell you what, to enhance your prestige, we'll dress you up in one of their outfits and lets see if you can keep up with their dance routines. I'll even pay your $5/hour. But you'll have to pay your own transportation to and from work.

    3. Yep, because prestige pays the bills. By the way, name 10 cheerleaders for me, by name. Snap Snap!

      Troll.

  7. This is another typical example of corporate greed. NFL teams rake in billions every season, yet hoard the cash whenever possible. This is why the minimum wage should be $16.50 / hour, the same as Australia's. We're in a recession because the money is stuck at the top of our economy. Recession is not the lack of money. We're still the wealthiest country on earth. Recession and depression is that the money fails to circulate. There's $31 trillion in the US economy. $28.8 is being held by less than 1% of the population. That leaves $2.2 T for the remaining 304 million citizens to fight over. Raise the minimum wage to a living wage, force cash to flow again, get the economy moving, then we'll be out of the recession. I'm in banking and analyze funds all day long. This is simple high school economics. From Dr G

    1. And you think the 1% that hold all the trillions would go to McDonalds for dinner ? Its only the 99% that will pay the increase. You Yutz !

      Delete
    2. Why does every job have to be a living wage? Personally, I don't want my daughters to be able to get a job at McDonald's, Walmart, etc making a living wage ($16.50/hr to use your example). Where is her motivation to improve, go to college, start her own business, contribute to society (and not just be a consumer)? Why should a business owner be responsible to pay a 30 or 40 yr old adult enough to live on for a job/position that was designed for a teenager or college student to make some extra money?

    3. I agree this is just simple math. You have to circulate the money or life will come to a stop money wise. Make a law to make the rich circulate the money they have or they will have to be taxed by the Govt. of 60%.

    4. Pretty sure rich people invest their money in the stock market to get even richer... This investing goes to a company to use as capital. The 28.8 trillion does not just "sit" Dr. G. I'm questioning whether you even went to high school. And like previously stated all raising the minimum wage will do is cause inflation. If it worked why not just raise it to $800/hr and everyone could be rich as hell?

  8. I would just do away with the cheerleaders. They don't contribute at all to the game and if you watch on TV, like most of us, you don't even see them. If the league keeps them, then they should be fairly compensated. Before you decide, this is only getting a foot in the door. This will only cost more to the league and more to the consumer.

  9. This is a very interesting case. The Oakland Raiders went against their contract in the first place by not paying them. Out of a few million, the cheerleaders get a few thousand. It's better than nothing. It is not a matter of greed. The cheerleaders are getting what the NFL said that they would pay them. As far as getting rid of them? Well, if you get rid of the cheerleaders then get rid of the athletes. Like they sang in "Fiddler on the Roof" ... tradition, tradition, TRADITION!!! .

  10. uhm, YEAH. However, that amount of money is nothing! Barely enough to teach a lesson at all. That's no punishment. Chump change.

  11. that sounds like a pittance...

still waiting on the zombie apokolypse

  12. No one forced them to become cheerleaders. I believe they did this on there own. Find out what you get payed before you start the job.

    ReplyDelete
  13. They could have quit if they wanted to. Plus, that's a lot considering they just perform for themselves instead of actually cheering the team on.

  14. The cheerleaders compensation is glory, exposure and self-satisfaction at being one of the exalted ones. They should at least pay all their expenses. If they pay more then they need to pay all the other "little people" who work at the game just to be a part of the big scene.

  15. We go to the games for the games...not the cheerleaders. In College it "may" work...not in the NFL
