ESPN suspends Max Kellerman over domestic abuse remarks: Report

ESPN has reportedly suspended boxing commentator and radio host Max Kellerman from the network following a conversation he had on ESPN-LA Radio, reports the New York Daily News.

On the "Mason & Ireland " show, which leads into his afternoon-drive program, Kellerman admitted to hitting his girlfriend many years ago.

ESPN would neither confirm nor deny Kellerman's suspension. In a statement issued Friday afternoon and ESPN spokesman said: "Max Kellerman will return to ESPN-LA Radio and 'SportsNation' on Thursday."

The startling admission occurred as Kellerman related a story about his then-girlfriend, now wife Erin Kellerman.

According the the Daily News, he said that the pair were at a college party and both had too much to drink.

The situation escalated and his girlfriend hit him. He hit her back, he said, but the incident was a one-time incident and they have been happily married for 20 years.

Kellerman's admission of having hit a woman was reportedly called "inappropriate" by ESPN and his suspension comes just days after Stephen A. Smith was suspended for comments he made while discussing the Ray Rice domestic abuse case during the "First Take" morning show..

According to the Daily News, the reason for Kellerman's suspension is for discussing the Rice situation, which is extremely touchy subject after Smith's recent boondoggle.

Smith condemned domestic violence but advised women not to "provoke" men to it.

"Let's make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions," he said, presumably to his female viewers.

Smith later apologized.

    2. Anyone who listens to "The Know It All Kellerman" on the radio should not be surprised of what he said. His New York tough guy talk is all just that , talk. Poor Marselles has to put with him. He should be suspended longer. Like for good!

  3. Frankly, unless I listen to the radio show and heard the discussion its hard to make a specific comment about what was said, the context and how it was said. I know Max to be very passionate about his work and tells like he sees it, even when his opinion is contrary to the sport in question. We need more reporters like Max. I don't like to see punishment when a any person admits to a mistake; especially one that was made 20 years ago when both parties were under the influence. 20 years of marriage is a success story.

    1. ESPN is wrong in suspending Max Kellerman. Twenty years ago or so Max and his then girlfriend under the influence of being drunk had a fight in which she hit him and he hit her back. They have been happily married for twenty years and such an incident has not been repeated. His wife has obviously forgiven him and he has forgiven her. Only ESPN in their infinite wisdom and extreme fairness has suspended a man for honestly reporting an incident in his life that he was not proud of. I do not know where they get the intellectual and moral right to suspend him. As his employer they can do that but was this the proper thing for them to do. WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK? IS ESPN CORRECT IN WHAT THEY DID PLEASE LET US KNOW....THANKS

  5. Why does no one ever say that it's NOT alright for a woman to hit a man? Can a man not defend himself? I once saw a woman attacking a much smaller man with a hammer. He was trying to get away from the woman. She caught him on a highway heading out of town. She was surrounded by her encouraging relatives cheering her on. C'mon, it's NEVER alright to hit anyone, be you man OR woman.

  6. This is why I stopped watching ESPN and other TV sports networks. The man admitted to making a mistake and you suspend him. I bet if it was a woman making the comment she still would be the victim.

  7. Ray Rice has been an abuser for how long. Just because Kellerman spoke the truth. It is funny how celeb's , sports stars can always get out of sticky situations. But us common people would of had our asses hauled to jail. It doesn't matter if you are a female or male that has been abused or if you are the abuse, it isn't humane to do that to another human being. God get some HELP>

  8. You should be suspended from the human race. Murder is the #1 cause of death in pregnant women in the US. Domestic abuse is no joke.Grow up.
