Derek Jeter talks climate change at Davos World Economic Forum

Derek Jeter is in Switzerland and it isn't for some radical new treatment for his surgically-repaired left ankle.

The Yankees shortstop is finding his inner Al Gore and discussing climate change at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Jeter, who avoids politics in the locker room like a fastball aimed at his head, isn't exactly known for getting into issues outside the clubhouse either.  In this case, Jeter says he hopes in the wake of Hurricane Sandy that climate change is addressed, as global political and business leaders gather in Switzerland, because he's seen it for himself.

Jeter, who is sponsored by Gatorade, is a guest of its parent company, Pepsi.

"I was in New York for Hurricane Sandy," Jeter told the Columbus Dispatch following a private lunch thrown by Pepsi.  "[Climate change] is just something that's gotten so much attention," Jeter said.  "Regardless of how you feel about it , it's something that needs to be addressed because we're seeing more natural disasters each year ... something has to be causing it."

More than 2,500 politicians, business leaders and academics are attending the forum to address key issues facing the world in 2013.

Jeter said it was an "honor" to be part of the gathering, calling it "the biggest business conference in the world" but adding that he doesn't try to interject himself into politics.

"I know my place," he said.

    1. You should believe scientists, which a large percentage do say it's happening. Unless....could it be that you watch Fox? Stick with Jeter if that's the case.

  4. It's kind of refreshing to see Jeter outside his comfort zone trying to make some contribution along with world leaders to address a global issue that most of us, Jete included, simply experience and witness but not fully understood.

Yes, Jete, something must be causing all these natural calamities that are pouring on us much too much of late.

Good work. Now come back already and get that ankle in shape for opening day. And make sure Joba knows he can no longer throw at Youk. We need him healthy, chin up.

    1. Jete, Get back so we can kick your butt again. As far as global warming, you don't know the whole story and you are being fooled as I once was by those making big bucks in the fiction of it all.

  5. Jeter would be well served to keep his mouth shut about global warming. It's really called nature taking it's course, ebb and flow, yin and yang, or more commonly the warming after an ice age.

  6. Lost all respect for a good player, the broken ankle must have left him un-balanced to really think global warming is real.

    1. Sure he's getting paid !!! He has also been brain washed like most of the New Jokers. Give me a break New York is a major Joke just like California.
Next he'll say get rid of your guns it's safer that way don't you know. Chicago I commend for the great job they have done with gun laws, heck only 446 school age kids were killed in 2012 by so many law abiding citizens that turned in their guns.

    2. "Scientists" that work for the oil companies were paid to tell you that burning fossil fuel is just fine, but you don't get paid to repeat the propaganda, you do it for nothing. You just continue to pay high prices for their products and they continue to reap record profits. You're worried about Al Gore getting rich, really!!!! Do you really think we can continue to dump millions of tons of pollutants into the atmosphere without consequence! Open your eyes to your own foolishness and realize that you are being manipulated by those that have the power over you to do so.

  8. Sounds like Jetter starting to seek another way to make millions.Soon we will rely China for everything, they will pollute the air over there making stuff for us so we won't pollute the air over here, really makes sense.

  10. Watch Jeter and A-rod,(the sisters)send the Yankees to the end of New York baseball as we know it. Jeter was done two years ago, took roids that rotted his ankle. First he tried to cheat on his N.Y. taxes so now he's sucking up to the Ford foundation, global Pepsi and any other elite crook. But hey, he's a class act weasel in baseball psyco babble.
