WNBA's Nakia Sanford breaks Phoenix mayor's nose in practice

In a photo-op gone totally wrong, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton had his nose broken after accidentally getting elbowed in the face by Nakia Sanford of the Phoenix Mercury.

Stanton ran drills Monday with the WNBA team and was working out with the practice squad when the mayor went up for a rebound against the much taller Sanford and came down with the busted nose and without the ball.

That's what happens when you're the smallest person under the rim.

Stanton was taken to a local hospital for CT scan and found out his nose was broken in two places.  His ego was bruised just a little.

The mayor's office said he was in good spirits and would meet with a doctor for a check-up at a later date.  Stanton issued a statement saying "injuries are part of the game— they're battle wounds."

Later, Stanton was upbeat and said he is looking forward to watching the Mercury on Sunday— their first game since the Olympic break.

He's probably safer in the stands.
